The problem with the pull kick is the shoulder leans , a give away Wallace uses a bounce to prevent this almost like a broken rhythm jumping jack , legs come together and kick at once , head stays safe in the same position , distance gained on bounce , does not look aggressive.

Great points if like Bill Wallace you step hard only 6 inches you get that freezing effect on your opponent you can then change the kicks arc example sidekick to round or hookick ,if you step to wide , your telegraphing and will get jammed or he will attack you angularly.

On the sidekick backwards step, wouldn't a front leg round kick to the back of the head be more effective than a rear leg round kick?

Both, in my opinion, would be valid techniques. However, I think, it would also depend on your opponents stance. If you are both orthodox (prior to them trying to side kick you), the you would literally only have the head as a target area after you have made the backward step. By throwing the rear leg turn you have a bigger target to aim for.

No slip turning kick off the back leg as you can get the lead hand to parry the side also it also sets you up for another kick or hand technic

Having studied TKD my self. I fund it better to step off the line (angle out) rather than to simply step back. Moving backwords allow the “attaker” to continue his attak , unless you intercept. Thus in this senerio (taking this as an example) I would be initiating retaliation round kick, as I am in the midst of swithching stances (stepung back)
In other words. - as a sliding sudekick is comming at me, I respond with a hopback switch roundhouse kick simultaneously .
Of course this is easier said, than done. 😊
Kool stuff. ! Keep it going. 👍
