  • Odyssey Gyro generations G1 came out in late 1986 and was designed by Brian Scura. It was used on many of the 1987 freestyle bikes BITD including the Haro Master, Sport, GT freestyle line up from the Performer through the PFTTM. This version used slotted bosses in the upper reaction plate and lower cup. M6 threads for the barrel adjusters. The balls on the end of the gyro cables were the largest diameter of any of the generations.
    Odyssey came out with a revised design in 1994, G2 gyro used a lower profile bottom cup and a slightly different detangler from G1. All threaded bosses were no longer slotted and were M7 threads. The balls on the ends of the cables were smaller diameter than G1.
    Around 1997 the G3 gyro came out to work with 1-1/8” threaded steer tubes found on many of the freestyle bikes as they switched over from 1”. The G3 used smaller M6 barrel adjusters and universal upper and lower cables.
    I’m not exactly sure when the G4 gyro came out but it is called the GTX. There is a pro version of this that includes everything you need to install the gyro. Or you can purchase all the individual parts separately like the upper reaction plate and the gyro tabs. Some of the key features of the GTX are Precision sealed mechanism bearing 6061-T6 Aluminum and a low 17mm stack height. Universal cables are also used. The detangler is available in a few colors but most of them are black.

    Most people (all people?) are unaware that the current Odyssey GT-X Gyro mechanism fits on any bike running a Gyro (any generation Gyro setup). Old school, mid school, new school, the GT-X fits them all. You heard it here first. Side note, the "gyro" from Shadow Conspiracy uses a true precision bearing, which is the only "gyro" product to do so.

      AmazingChina….that’s great info. The only thing about the GTX is it is designed for a 1-1/8” headtube and needs gyro tabs to work. The old school bikes do not have provisions for a gyro tab (unless you want to drill and tap the tube). Most people running old school bikes prefer the G1 or G2 look even if it is knockoff Porkchop stuff. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      @@atrains That's actually a common (universal?) misconception, but the Gyro GT-X is identical in dimensions to the G1 Gyro and is working perfectly on my old school bike with the ancient Gyro top that's held in place by the headset cup. Odyssey never changed the dimensions of the detangler device itself, for any generation. I measured with a caliper. The GT-X works on 1" threaded forks and1 1/8 threadless forks without issue. For me I want performance, and have no interest in a museum piece, so it's all about having the best bike to ride.👍 Awesome video and channel, BTW!

    Great video me dude. I used g1 back in 1985/86 on my Kawahara freestyle bmx. Plus I used front brakes that run into from the top of the gooseneck to the bottom of the gooseneck to the front brakes. I forget what that setup is called, do u know the name of it. I paid about $1500.00(CAD) which is about $1086.85(USD)bal in 1985. It was a neon pink with the white 5 spokes tires with the two finger grip dia comp setup system. It was a great bmx until it got stole from my bedroom by my little brother while I was at summer camp. I would still have it now yes I kicked his butt for it. Ty. Alots of love from Canada 🇨🇦 keep up the rad rides and videos.

    You could do the history of the dia-compe nippon 883 brakes. They went through quite a few revisions with hardware(adjusters and pivot bolts ect.) and then to current mold with no nippon on them.

    • @atrains
      @atrains  Год назад +1

      Fun fact Nippon means Japan. That’s why it’s missing from the reproduction Dia Compe 883. Production is not in Japan.

    Great video. Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I had an SR Spin Tech stem/rotor combo on a 1985 GT when I was a kid. I had wondered in recent years why I did not just buy a Gyro at the time, but maybe Gyros were not as readily available. Do you when the Spin Tech came out and if there were other popular competing rotors at the time?

    • @atrains
      @atrains  11 месяцев назад

      Canyon Bagger
      The Sakae Spin Tech came stock on the Mongoose Decade. The first generation Sakae's were stamped '85. The Dyno Spin-Techs were only stamped '86 and '87. After that GT ditched the SR Spin Tech for the Odyssey gyro.

    You forgot about the top gyro cables top single cable becoming short later on,which i have a peeve on seeing 80's bikes with those cables,it just looks so bad.Also the bottom of the gyro 2 detangler is not slotted its closed in so the cable wont pop out or shift around. Its kinda tricky getting it on too.

    • @atrains
      @atrains  Год назад

      Yup

    • @atrains
      @atrains  Год назад +1

      MorbidThrasher I thought I mentioned that the G2 lower cup and reaction plate bosses are closed threads. The detangler mechanism on the G1 and G2 are both slotted though.
      As for the gyro cables it is best to “measure twice and cut once”. There are a few variations of the length of the upper cable so people need to be aware. Chances are if you are getting NOS G1 cables you are good to go.

    Why can you use a G3 on a 1" head tube? What about it would not work

    • @atrains
      @atrains  10 месяцев назад +2

      Mikeboss416 the G3 Gyro is designed for threadless headtubes only. The mid school bikes basically and new school to some extent. The Odyssey G3 Gyro kit is designed to work on regular 1-1/8" headsets, if you're running an integrated headset you will either need a frame that is drilled for Gyro Tabs, or have your frame drilled and tapped. Unfortunately the Odyssey G3 Gyro does not come with Gyro Tabs. If you tried to install a G1 or G2 gyro on the 1-1/8” head tube bikes it won’t fit. You probably could fit the G3 on a 1980 bmx bike with a 1” headtube but it would be a very sloppy fit.
