Can we all just take a second to appreciate that the middle section goes from 7/4 to 6/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 into the outro, yet Gavin smooths it all out and makes it flow.
I never noticed how he adjusts his hi hat clutch mid playing to get different sounds for different parts of the song. He does it at 1:25 and again at 2:06. Incredible precision!
While I wouldn’t put it past him, it’s possible that the equipment is just messing up and he’s fixing it mid song. The change doesn’t seem to make a difference musically
I think he does it to play the double bass without the hihat getting too noisy from being wide open. The first time he just loose the clutch and de second time he adjust the hight again
Well spotted. In other videos that I guess are maybe more recent, I've noticed that he has a trick clutch mechanism that seems to let him leave it in a loose configuration while he's using the double bass pedals, and then it re-latches when he steps on the hi-hat pedal again.
Just so graceful like a ballerina, it just looks so effortless never once does it look like he’s bashing away, but yet it’s just so musical every measure he’s the softest hitting drummer I’ve ever seen yet I’ve never heard so much music come from one man’s drum set
I always like to say there is no best every legend or master that you watch they all contribute something to the instrument that I love, but I think I’m changing my mind he could quite possibly be the best. There isn’t one dynamic missing from this man’s playing and there’s nothing he cannot do
Watch the cymbal song and the drum song and you will see that there is no hype. yes there is a boatload a good drummers, but gavin is a different animal. one that is wired directly to an insanely creative brain.
*cough* *cough* Benny Greb *cough* *cough* In all seriousness, I LOVE Gavin Harrison’s drumming, but in my book, no one can touch Benny when it comes to grooving. Prime example of ghost notes with his fingers? Check out his performance of September at the MEINL Festival (2010 I think, but don’t quote me on that)
He uses cut down snare wires on his snare to get a beefier shell tone instead of the wirey tone most snares get. I think he cuts down to 8 or 12 wires instead of the usual 20
Dissolution and Your Wilderness albums are both excellent, and Gavin just takes it to that next echelon. Sublime drumming. Instantly recognizable, as well
I have to take a minute here and mention HOW HAPPY I AM TO SEE GAVIN on this channel. A humble request to Vic Firth to please continue to put up more of his drumming. Seeing him play to tracks is like an awakening of sorts. He's been missed dearly :) Thank you!
I've seen Gavin on multiple Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief tours since 2007 (Never King Crimson sadly), but let me tell you: This kid has got the chops. He is going places... ... ... ... Who am I kidding, the man could take the drums for a walk whilst comatose.
I saw him playing 8 or 9 RUSH songs a few months back, eh, and... I'm not sure if I can still call Neil Peart The Professor, you know? He made tunes like Limelight and Subdivisions even better... fewer beats here and there (amazing fillings) and no need for all that fancy stuff (over-drumming)... something Neil always kept in 'cause sometimes, more is less.
The dynamics from playing ghost notes with the finger tips to open up and close again the hihats when rocking the double bass is impressing. It´s out of the box thinking. Besides that his sense of humor is amazing. Great to be living in an epoche with such great musicians.
Love the flourishes he adds with the left foot on the hats. Quite creative to hear someone playing an open hat sound when both hands are tied up on the ride and snare.
I enjoyed the construction of the different drum parts, the explosiveness of the song. But most of all what I gain or moresoeven learned from watching this is how he kept good solid time....That is sooo important to me...I comb through hours of footage of different drummers of all styles, and that's what I hear them stress:Keeping time and laying that groove as Mr. Gavin Harrison did. Again, Thanks Vic Firth for the awesome in all areas of drumming and percussion because it keeps me tuned and motivated.✌☞♪♬
Dudes been telling about his finger skills in 1:05, but look how awesome he changes his kit sound at 2:07. Incredible musician. Hes on a whole new level
Mr Harrison, in my view is some that defines ' professional'. By that, I mean he is in such control of his craft, that you never get to see him on the outer edge of his playing, or when he goes all out. There are, I think , little hints of that in this clip, because he seems to be playing with more of an edge in this than I usually see him. To me , he's the natural progression from Bill Bruford, both in technique and in temprament behind the kit. A Gavin Harrison who 'lets the clutch out' would be a sight to behold...
Any way to get a drumless version of Tear You Up? I love jamming along with this song, but I hate being constantly reminded of how much I suck when playing along with Gavin... ;-)
Really…he’s my favorite drummer. He’s playing an instrument rather than a noise machine and a big old time-keeping mass of wood, metal, and heads. It’s just different than every other drumming style.
I remember...first time i heard that song: The thing that caught my ear in this song is that tasty little Hihat splash thing he does at 0:36. And i'm still amazed by that...
I just bought a pair of those sticks, I like them! I like the weight of my 5B's and the length of my 747 Rocks. These bridge that gap while coming in a little longer and a unique tip design. I'm really digging them so far!
I saw Scott Amendola up close recently. I've seen him play with his hands and fingers on his drums before, but this time I noticed him doing the same "fingers with cross-stick" thing that Gavin does here.
He's got a lot of talent. He could make a name for himself in drumming. With my help, he could be the best. Even better than Travis Barker. *Edit* I'm scratching my head trying to understand how someone would actually think I was being serious. It's so over-the-top and ridicules. Gavin is incredible HELLO. :)
love seeing Gavin in my subs! my ocd when setting up my kit and keeping it as clean as possible would hate that blue mark he gets from the grip on the snare tho haha!
1:50 I've never seen Gavin hit so hard and washy the ride cymbal.. I like to think it's a natural influence of Crimson drumming! Or maybe it's simply what music required xD or maybe both. anyway, Fantastic as usual
One of the best modern drummers of the past 20 years
One of the best drummers ever. Period.
Top 10 all time for me🤷
Indeed!!!
The best for me....
Of known drummers, agree 💯
If poetry exists in drumming, this man is the Bard. The Pineapple Thief was already a great band. Gavin has taken them to master status.
Yep agreed
He plays busy but never steps on the arrangement. What an incredible gift!
Can we all just take a second to appreciate that the middle section goes from 7/4 to 6/4 to 5/4 to 4/4 into the outro, yet Gavin smooths it all out and makes it flow.
I was listening to this while driving yesterday and was counting, only to realize it drops every few measures. Pretty smooth
Love how Gavin transitions so smoothly from 4/4 to 7/8, then to 6/8, 5/8, then back to 4/4.
1:05 great finger work there. it's the little things when it comes to gavin. great song, incredible playing!
Wow, you weren't kidding! I thought you were talking about his grip. Very creative.
Jeez, that's so subtle!
wow... watch more drummers!
...Did Gavin sleep with your girlfriend or something? We're just complimenting the guy, relax.
something ive never seen before
I never noticed how he adjusts his hi hat clutch mid playing to get different sounds for different parts of the song. He does it at 1:25 and again at 2:06. Incredible precision!
I noticed that too! Unreal
While I wouldn’t put it past him, it’s possible that the equipment is just messing up and he’s fixing it mid song. The change doesn’t seem to make a difference musically

+Vic Firth FINALLY !!!! Please more Gavin Harrison in this channel!!!!
" i need more gavin harrison on my monitor, please.."
I second that!
Rico Martins just never enough gavin Harrison is there.
+1 sir. More Gavin! YES!
It's such a joyful and pleasant experience to see this man play the drums. Probably the best in the world
I always like to say there is no best every legend or master that you watch they all contribute something to the instrument that I love, but I think I’m changing my mind he could quite possibly be the best. There isn’t one dynamic missing from this man’s playing and there’s nothing he cannot do
The subtle finger roll on the snare drums in between taps on the rim... no other drummer thinks so creatively.
watch more drummers before getting too hyped!
Watch the cymbal song and the drum song and you will see that there is no hype. yes there is a boatload a good drummers, but gavin is a different animal. one that is wired directly to an insanely creative brain.
I've got two words for you: Benny. Greb.
Benny Greb is indeed great, but at the level these guys play at, there's no need for "best." They ARE the best, and there doesn't have to be just one.
*cough* *cough* Benny Greb *cough* *cough*
In all seriousness, I LOVE Gavin Harrison’s drumming, but in my book, no one can touch Benny when it comes to grooving. Prime example of ghost notes with his fingers? Check out his performance of September at the MEINL Festival (2010 I think, but don’t quote me on that)
Apart from Gavin Harrison's phenomenal drumming, I'm also impressed by how he manages to have the exact same hairstyle in every video
I'm 62 years old. Been drumming since I was 12. I love watching your videos. You are among the BEST I'VE EVER SEEN!!!
You can state it loudly mate!
wow, that snare sounds amazing!
kit*
Gavin*
Awesome! Gonna see them live this monday!!

Daily Drum Lesson gavin makes the snare sound great.
He uses cut down snare wires on his snare to get a beefier shell tone instead of the wirey tone most snares get. I think he cuts down to 8 or 12 wires instead of the usual 20
It was because of Gavin that I found the pineapple thief🍍 and I’m very thankful for him! Amazing drummer!
Dissolution and Your Wilderness albums are both excellent, and Gavin just takes it to that next echelon. Sublime drumming. Instantly recognizable, as well
"Fuck yeah!" was my reaction when I saw this in my feed.
Luke Rogers same hahaha :)
Have you listened to the album this song is off of? Highly recommended - Gavin's drumming shines throughout the album :)
Gavin's playing is easily the (only) highlight of the album.
I thought EXACTLY the same!
Its a great LP with or with out Gavin but thats my opinion
I have to take a minute here and mention HOW HAPPY I AM TO SEE GAVIN on this channel. A humble request to Vic Firth to please continue to put up more of his drumming. Seeing him play to tracks is like an awakening of sorts. He's been missed dearly :) Thank you!
One of the very few drummers that really give their tom set a meaning. Not just for decoration.
I've seen Gavin on multiple Porcupine Tree and Pineapple Thief tours since 2007 (Never King Crimson sadly), but let me tell you:

Even simpler in groove there puts so much passion. He was born to do this
The little things he does with his hi-hats are always incredible. This guy is a drumming genius.
gavin and steve gadd are the 2 most musical drummers i have ever heard. simply brilliant players.
Gavin is such an inspiration for drummers of all talent levels. So much to learn!!! I love it!!!! :)
One of the few drummers alongside Marco and a few others whom I watch with a big grin on my face.
Love the flourishes he adds with the left foot on the hats. Quite creative to hear someone playing an open hat sound when both hands are tied up on the ride and snare.
I find that Gavin harrison is one of the most versatile musician. simply amazing stuff
I'm actually most impressed by Gavin's insanely solid groove after @0:30 - that kick and snare are exactly, right where they need to be - HUGE pocket!
Amazing drummer and the album is incredible
What an incredible drummer !!!! I saw him recently and I was totally hypnotized
THIS SONG HAS A HYPNOTIC EFFECT ON ME! GREAT SONG, GREATER DRUMMER! A MASTER OF HIS CRAFT, GAVIN HARRISON!
Nice job Gavin Harrison. Vic Firth, congratulations on supporting the musicians anywhere.
All the Gaviness in such a beautiful groove;
Gavin Harrison for President \m/ Gandalf of the drumming world.
I enjoyed the construction of the different drum parts, the explosiveness of the song. Gavin Harrison, you are the man. Never fail to impress
Dudes been telling about his finger skills in 1:05, but look how awesome he changes his kit sound at 2:07. Incredible musician. Hes on a whole new level
Good grief! The best sounding snare drum ever! Holy Crap!!!!
Mr Harrison, in my view is some that defines ' professional'. I love this mans work. Just wow. He improved The Pineapple Thief if that is even possible!! ☺️
How could he have played this beautiful if the song itself wasn't beautiful? But he is a gifted drummer, indeed!
that hi hat clutch adjustment though
Thomas Cordell haha. So sutble right?
Guess he didn't have his Cobra Clutch installed that time..?
He only uses the cobra clutch for when he needs the hihat tight. He has used the DW drop clutch in the past for a sloshy hihat.
The way he does that, so fluently
1:26 loosed and 2:07 tightened
Gavin Harrison is now something like 55 years old isn't he? I envy him. Drumming keeps you in shape!
Gavin is supreme
Handle it GAVIN!!! Like a BOSS!
Que tremendo. Lo vi con King Crimson y aluciné. Grande master
Any way to get a drumless version of Tear You Up? I love jamming along with this song, but I hate being constantly reminded of how much I suck when playing along with Gavin... ;-)
😂😂😂
I get your feeling mate.
Cheers from France! 🍻
I've taken up Air Drumming, I sound just like Gavin now!
ruclips.net/video/l-1awi26pBs/видео.html Late, but I hope this is helpful...
Wow that snare just POPS!
Vu à La Maroquinerie à Paris sur la première date de la tournée avec les Pineapple Thief. Il était déjà au top. Excellent batteur ce Gavin.
Porcupineapple Threef.
page 1 of "how to make yourself look dumb and ignorant in one sentence"
yes are the same with liitations, and i dont like porcupine or the fucking wilson in solitary, but the drummers are fucking amazing..., ignorant.
I can't stop watching him
How can someone say they don't like Pineapple Thief?
Porcupine Gone Semi-Pissed Thief?
Happy birthday to Gavin.🎉
I love his work, simply mezmorisingsing
he is not a drummer... he is a brilliant artist... outstanding :)
This hihat footwork!! Man, just watch this footwork
The Blue Whale has commanded me to play Gavin Harrison drum parts until I die! FUCK YEAH
Nothing overly fancy, just solid fucking playing! Gavin Harrison is the man!
Cuando los vi en Madrid no podía apartar la vista de él, hipnótico maestro!!!
It doesn't matter how technical anyone else might be, no one else sounds this good!
Between him and Thomas Lang, drumming has gone to a whole different level.
Definitely
And you actually mentioned my 2 fave drummers ;))))
His fills are so impossibly neat!
I expected a mellow song based on the intro, then the fireworks began. Very nice work, like always!
Beautiful!
Really…he’s my favorite drummer. He’s playing an instrument rather than a noise machine and a big old time-keeping mass of wood, metal, and heads. It’s just different than every other drumming style.
Gavin is a drumming God, he can do no wrong!!!
Love your playing my friend. Total respect
That song and your playing were friggin awesome!!
One tight drummer, one of my favorites.
I love this man
impresionante como abre y cierra el contratiempo en el curso de la canción. admiración total a Gavin H.
Gavin is just amazing!
Incredible drummer!
The Liam Neeson of drumming!
And that ghost notes with the finger's after he hit the rim.
1000000 IQ!
Very Nice! Gavin Harrison 👏😜🤘
1:18, what he does with the hats is awesome... just so subtle
1:05 - Ghost notes with your fingertips...nice.
Great drumming.....the sticks are also awesome
I remember...first time i heard that song:
The thing that caught my ear in this song is that tasty little Hihat splash thing he does at 0:36. And i'm still amazed by that...

Yeeeeaaaahhhhhh - incredible Drummer!
that was sick....those finger notes ....man...
Guru Gavin!!
Snare sounds awesome
Great job Gav! As always.
Amazing, love it !
That's jus awesome man !!! Love love loved it 🎼💖👍🙃
Soooo beautiful
Islington next month. See you there 👍👍
I saw Scott Amendola up close recently. I've seen him play with his hands and fingers on his drums before, but this time I noticed him doing the same "fingers with cross-stick" thing that Gavin does here.
The bridge section of this song rocks hard.
Master at work...
master of the master!!!
Just amazing!
And he already got a name.
Did u read the last half of the comment?
Yes. Just like almost everyone has a name xD.
Gavin is light years ahead of Travis Barker. Hell, the average drummer is above that freak, lol.
Sergio Velasquez Dumb ass.
Digging that prototype ride!
In holland we say Netjes!!!!! Neat and clean!
love seeing Gavin in my subs! my ocd when setting up my kit and keeping it as clean as possible would hate that blue mark he gets from the grip on the snare tho haha!
Is that his signature Protean snare? This one seems a bit bigger than on his previous videos.
Great job Gavin!
When will you be returning to
the States? Will it be with PT
(Pineapple Thief) or KC?
1:50 I've never seen Gavin hit so hard and washy the ride cymbal.. I like to think it's a natural influence of Crimson drumming! Or maybe it's simply what music required xD or maybe both. anyway, Fantastic as usual
