Thanks for blowing the dust off my tent peg video Paul. I really did nerd out in that one. Anyone that watches it all the way through is destined to find a really nice peg on their next camp!
I adore your tips now that I know how camping has become real medicine to someone like me who thrives in solitude, I'll step a notch higher and experience what nature brings to me thanks paul❤
When added a second peg, out the extension cord under the main guy line. Another approach is to put two pegs in a slight X shape. I've found that two pegs like this work really well.
Good advice. I have a random selection of tent pegs over years, the ones which didn't snap. I place the longest strongest on the windward side, and yes like you double-peg, but I do not use separate cut guys, I use a slip knot on a long guy and then another further out as I then can place each peg at the best position. I don't use anything other than a loop knot, less mechnical failure.
The Nortent looks great. When are we getting a review? Very interesting comments about seam sealing, would love a vid on pro’s and con’s of different tent materials. Last vid about pro’s and con’s of inner vs outer pitch tent really informative and useful. As always big thumbs up to Paul.
Great advice and tips especially the double pegging never thought of that . The Norton u have there which looks good , looks like a copy of the tarptent moment dw which I have . I love this design style of tent
“I often find it’s more difficult to get a longer peg in.” Aye, but it’s a difficulty worth overcoming, ain’t it? Sometimes a change in angle does the trick. Carry on. 😁
Summit camping can be very risky tbh. Sometimes checking MWIS and looking at wind direction and doing a cross check with your o/s map for the alternate aspect slope/flatter contour lines means that you can have a safer pitch lower down. The term "Bombproof" is massively banded about but its nonsense. Its a tent! Good tip on the double pegging!!!
For high winds (anything above 30mph) I can highly recommend the Terra Nova Quasar. A 4 season geodesic design. The trade off is the weight. At 3.5kg (2 man), it can't be considered as being light, but it's VERY strong. I've had mine in 90mph+ on the Isle of Harris & it stayed tight as a drum all night. I've yet to see a lightweight tent that's any good in high winds. It doesn't exist.
@@thomasjeffersonlane9902 It was 90mph+. It blew the roof off a farm building just 200 yards from me. It's not unusual to get such strong winds in the Hebrides.

Nice to see the Nortent, I expect you will make a review as well. I have been eying this as a better winter tent then my Helsport Ringstind Pro tent (which is not providing space for sitting)
Love that little trick with the extra bit of rope. As you know, I’m Adam in the wild so I’d of never of been able to think of that myself 😂 Top man Mr Paul, I reckon the next one … is the one 🕺
I had to bail in La Palma on a multiday hike the weather was beautiful but the wind was ridiculous one night and the pegs just didn't hold in the volcanic gravel...the double peg out is something I will definately be doing alot more after that
You can get some great sand pegs that may be worth a shot in the volcanic gravel? If you put them in more towards horizontally than just straight up vertical they hold well.
Hi Paul I was looking for a lightweight tent for hiking and it turns out I’ve got to spend over £100.00. So I got to thinking about my first hot tent from one tigress and it turns out it’s only 1.9kg you have to put up the outer first as well so your under cover to put up the bedroom plus lots of room for gear and cooking as I’ll leave the stove out. Yeh happy days. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I got some of these silly pegs with a Terra Nova Starlite 1. Not impressing considdering the price tag on the tent. I had to spend another 40£ on a pack of Hilleberg pegs. Nice tent/bivy apart from that.
great video and advice, can I ask what you think of vern 1, is it very good in high wind and good for uk summits ? up there with scarp 1 and some hillenbergs RL ? thinking of getting one so any thoughts would be fantastic
Hey paul! Great video! Definitely looking at upgrading my tent soon! Random question but what do you do with your mic when it starts raining? I just bought a mic but wondering what will happen in heavy rain, don’t want to ruin it!
Excellent vid....very good tips😊 Being a cynic...i dont like the fact that you can pay several hundred pounds for a top tent...to not have it seam sealed by them. Yet they can sell you sealant to do it yaself !! Which to me is like buying a car with no tyres !! Ridiculous 😂 Anyway...paul....going to watch yr vids....very sensible good info vids....thankyou..
to be honest, I don't really see why one would need to bail out. I wild camped in the heart of the cairngorms, about 13km from the car. The winds were pretty brutal and broke the poles such that the tent had pretty much no structure. However, the tent was still perfectly windproof. As I always do, I packed a bivvy bag and just climbed in that to make up for any lost protection. I guess if you weigh less than 50kg, then the above might be bad advice, mind you, as your body may not provide the ballast required to stop the tent from moving. I suppose if you have a separate fly sheet and inner, then it's more of a problem if the poles break. But that is just another reason I find those types of tent quite bizarre.
Hey Paul, I have a question. I'm looking for a 2 person tent ⛺️, though as nails, no center pole, built in ground sheet, 4 or fourth season. If such a thing exists that preferably not as expensive as a hilliberg. Would love your recommendation. Thanks for your great videos. Cheers, eufus.
Wild Country Helm 2. Or you could look at some Vango options (e.g. Helvellyn 200). They make very tough budget tents - seen a vid with a campsite full of them in Iceland standing strong in some dicey weather. A little on the heavier side, and a little bulky to boot, but you'll have peace of mind in 99% of British weather.
I do actually think it's pretty shocking that after spending 400 or 500 quid on a tent that they don't come already waterproof! I'll stick to my little helm 2 I think 😂😂
No tents using sil.on both sides come "fully" waterproof. Not even hillebergs. But once.thr special thread gets wet the first time and swells, it becomes waterproof. That's the trade off for much stronger materials. Your PU helm 2 I could rip the fabric with my hands.
I always teach young people that it’s important to consider wind direction when pitching. Mist tents are designed to be stronger in certain directions. Often the rear of the tent facing into the wind and the door therefore not into the wind. It can make a big difference in performance of the tent in bad weather.
Really appreciate that Lewis goes camping by train (or/and bus). That’s the real ‘Leave No Trace’. Well done Lewis 👍👍.

Another great video Paul.

Great advice, I double peg quite often on higher ground. 4 or 6 extra lightweight tent pegs and guy line is worth it to carry.
First and foremost... What a stunning background to the video
Glad the comments are back up and running - some great info shared here 😎👍
One of the main things to do is pitch for the weather not for the view which seems to not apply to a lot of RUclipsrs
Thank you so much, I'm off on my first camping adventure at the end of May and I'm a bit nervous, this is really helpful!

That looks like a nice simple to pitch tent.
I am beginning to lean towards the Nortent, it looks sexy. I might have to purchase one myself.
Highly recommended. Seen my review?
Remember the old Triangles that Saunders used to sell, great idea for stormy weather.

Yer iv recently got one quite roomy inside surprisingly and definitely enough guy ropes
When you mentioned 90, was that forecasts saying it? Did you personally measure the gust at 90, or were the consistent wind speeds measured at 90?
I bought my Ultra Quasar in 1993 (courtesy of a hefty climbing club discount), I weighed it recently, everything bar the footprint is 3.8kgs.
