    From my personal experience, corsets are a game changer. I have scoliosis in my lumbar spine. It created a lot of pressure and I can sometimes get very severe back spasms. 15 years go, I showed up to my doctor's office looking like a bent over, twisted question mark due to extreme spasms. My doctor recommended a combination of massage therapy and having a custom corset fitted to me (standard orthopedic back braces are too rigid to accommodate my asymmetry). Since then, I have worn corsets whenever I feel the need to extra support, or even just because I want o. I have also learned to make my own corsets.
    Wearing a properly fitted corset (mine is modelled after a late 1880s style) provides instant relief on days when I would otherwise not be able to bend over to even put socks on. The way a corset works is that is distributes the weight of your chest and upper body more evenly through your hips, and gives over-worked muscles time to relax and recover by providing gentle support. Wearing a corset can also improve posture by instilling muscle memory. It is uncomfortable to slouch in a corset. When I wear my corsets, I will engage the core muscles required to sit or stand straighter: and over time, this has helped improve my posture. In terms of modern fashion, I have found them to be far more comfortable and wearable than modern shapewear which squeezes you like a sausage in all directions.
    As a historical reenactor, corsets are one of the topics that come up all the time. I spend more hours dispelling the idea that corsets "disfigure" bodies, are torture devices meant for the male gaze, or that they cause weakness in muscles, than in talking about any other article of clothing. A corset, properly fitted, should never feel as though it is cutting you off anywhere. They fit at the waist and flare out over the hips, ribs and bust to provide gentle support. They free your upper back and neck for the burden of carrying the weigh of the breasts on two thin straps over your shoulders and they help maintain posture, thereby easing back pain. To create the fashionable silhouettes, pads are used where nature is lacking.
    Visitors are also often shocked when I tell them that historically men wore corsets, too! Usually it was for back support or other medical reasons, but there was corsetry in the world of men's fashion as well during the 19th century!

    I am daily corset wearer, and I have been for YEARS. I had an L4-5 Laminectomy, and afterward my surgeon told me I had Spinal Stenosis (a congenital narrowing of the spinal channel), and I would be in a wheelchair by age 45. I made it to age 55, but I thank corset wearing to go ten years longer than his estimation. I’m still a daily corset user, and use a wheelchair about 10% of the time, and I’m doing very well! A medical back brace carried a $250 copay and lasted about six months before the plastic boning broke and/or the elastic just gave up. A well-made corset costs about $125 and I have had some for almost 20 years! So yay, modern corsetry, in keeping me on my feet!

      ?so right. ? EVERYone now knows how perfect & to be respected, accurate & utterly trustworthy they are after 2o2O, and how RUclips asserts how reliable and full of Integrity their expertise is also and we all agree with that 100% when we comment, it's so wonderful here.

    I definitely think I would benefit from the emotional grounding properties. I frequently sleep with a stuffed animal on my chest when I have overwhelming anxiety. When i cuddle my family on the couch i ask my children or husband to “rest on my chest” like when my kids were babies and we snuggled that way because it gives me a sense of well-being. And many times during the day especially around the full moon i feel too “scattered” for lack of a better term and hug myself or ask for hugs. I find myself wishing i had a belt or corset to “hug” me and make me feel like someone is walking beside me with their arm around me. Really it would be me loving myself by taking care of that need of mine with a corset❤

    There is actually a lot of sense to this. As an older post menopausal woman in my 70’s, who had 5 children, even after my pregnancies, I had a very flat stomach for many years, until after menopause. No my stomach muscles are not what they used to be, and the back pain is unbearable.

    I started wearing steel-boned corsets back in 2010. I still have my first one which was custom made. I started wearing corsets to improve my posture and reduce pain due to scoliosis. Everyone (except my corsetière) thought that I was crazy, including my chiropractor. But it worked (alongside chiropractic and physiotherapy). I discovered that corsets calmed my anxiety. In 2014 I was late diagnosed with ASD. This explained why corsets calmed me. They're like to Temple Grandin's squeeze machine. I've been wearing corsets on and off for years. Great video 👍 It's finally good to hear someone talk about the benefits.

    This is a great video, I've been an avid corset-wearer since my preteen years. Being 6'2" with scoliosis and degenerative spine issues, they've been a life saver for any prolonged sitting or standing periods. I've also noticed the reduction in anxiety thanks to the compression of the nervous system and minimized appetite over the years, as you've stated. ❤

    For about 4 months now I'm also actually wearing a corset almost daily, inspired from your first video about the benefits of corsets. And I was absolutely surprised, how good it starts feeling after a while. Unfortunately, I have just one "from the rack" "fashion piece" corset, that fits not perfectly and has steel boning. However, even with that I have already been able to benefit from the advantages. I can just imagine, how well it will doing with a costum fit bespoke corset. That is my next planned purchase. Thats for sure.
    Thank you so much for your content. Your video came exactly at the right time, since my osteopath mentioned last week, that wearing a corset would weaken my back muscles. And honestly, that has planted a little seed of doubt. But your new video has re-encouraged me again and busted that doubt. Because who could know better than a person, who is wearing corsets on a daily basis for years? I also don't fell that my back is getting weak, doing yoga and dancing regularly.
    Long story short... just wanted to say thank you... ♥

      You will make progress. Each corset you make will get you closer to one that feels perfect. Even after 15 years, I still try new things when making my corsets. It is a process. But it it is worth it. The best advice I got when I started drafting my own corset patterns years go is to give more room in the bust and hips than you think you will need. It is far easier to pinch out a bit here or there than to add in more material later. Also, at least when I draft my patterns, I don't just use the waist, overbust, center front and center back measures. I also use the underbust, under arm to waist (both sides to account for my scoliosis), and underbust to waist measurements to really get a precise fit.

    I loved this video! I often feel as if I were born in the wrong century:) I had experience wearing "waist cinchers" in 2017-2018 with the goal of making my waist smaller. It worked. After a couple of years, I stopped wearing the waist cincher, but my hourglass torso remains. Your video inspires me to pull out the waist cincher from the drawer and give my posture and shape a refresher. Your comments about confidence are extremely relatable. At the time I wore the waist cinchers, I was working in a very high pressure government job and noticed that when I was wearing my waist cincher at work, not only did I look great in my clothes, but I felt more confident and had a stronger presence in meetings and when speaking in large groups. Interesting!! I need to catch up on your hair videos. A few years back your videos inspired me to use Rhassoul clay instead of shampoo and my waist-length curly hair loves it! I also use Living Libations shampoo which is super pure. Blessings!

    Common Corset Myths:
    1. Corsets should restrict your breathing: Myth. They are designed to support not injure. Should not compress your ribs or breathing.
    2. Tight lacing the corset is normal: Myth. Tight lacing that caused breath or movement constriction or fainting was very rare historically. Corsets should not compress the waist too much. Instead they can be padded on the hips to give the illusion of a more hourglass figure.
    Corset Benefits:
    1. Corsets improve your posture and helps make you feel more confident by stopping slouching.
    2. Corsets strenghthen and support your core, they supplement your exercise routine.
    3. Corsets shape your waist and help contour your body.
    4. Corsets help relieve back pain, can help your back pain heal faster.
    5. Corsets helps bring mindfulness to your appetite and helps you tune into your body more to help you stay aware and mindful of portion control.
    6. Corsets enhance your body awareness and help you feel grounded and protected in your body. They give the experience of more emotional balance and centeredness and less sensitivity. They can even help with depression.

It's too tight at the waist and doesn't rest on my hips to provide any support. It's more of a cincher and I am built like an anime girl up top but very straight from ribcage through the hips. While never having worn a waist trainer or a faja It is possible they might give you some benefit. However, they are made with a high content of elastic which means they don't breathe. All of my corsets are made out of natural fibers so they don't get hot and they wick any perspiration that penetrates through the liner I wear. They do not stretch but if they are fitted properly you should be able to do yoga in them. I have one caveat on this and it is a corset made from German baleen and sports mesh. It moves with my body and allows me to ride a motorcycle safely due to the extended flexibility. The upside on that one is actually you can go swimming in it. No matter what garment you choose to wear, please do some research. In addition to what has been said here, I would advise Lucy's corsetry her website is full of information on fitting, wearing and the care of your corset. If you choose to buy a corset, please do the research on any brand you use. Look at outside reviews, not just those left on the corset vendors page. There are several out there that are notorious for not fitting, refusing to return money when you get something you can't wear, are made with subpar and potentially dangerous boning and one in particular who enjoys bullying their clients, incorrectly sizing the The corset they send you and seems to function like a cult.

    despite being a guy, I really love wearing corsets, specifically regency long corsets, the shoulder straps are really good for me since I'm always slouching causing stiff back and neck pain, it "trains" me to have proper posture as you said! since I sew my own corsets I can alter patterns to be much less curvy as I dont need the room in the hips, under clothes it stops the waistband of my trousers from digging in, (this may seem very weird but I'm between a size 34 and 36 waist, so pants are nearly always too tight or too loose, and a belt doesn't help since I either have to tighten it down a good deal to keep my pants on my waist, otherwise they slide down and settle on my hips which is really uncomfortable to me too...)

That said, my pro-powerlifter brother tells me a corset could serve a similar function to weight-lifting belts. I do also have a baby carrier that I carry my toddler in which has a stiff waist belt, that does transfer her weight more to my hips.

    • @mond5004

      I wear mine with jeans. Instead of a full shift underneath, a cotton or linen camisole will do. Then over top, I add a thin, close fitting tank top or t-shirt to smooth out the corset lines. Over top of that goes my outer shirt for the day. Long or short sleeves, t-shirt, sweater, blouse, etc. I wear them all with corsets.

      Great question. You would want a corset that fits very closely to your hip area, with no protruding area around your lower tummy. Alternately, you could find a shorter "waist cincher" style corset. You can also wear a corset over a regular, modern tank top, which is what I do most often, lately.

I have fibromyalgia and some disc slippage. All this info is to ask you if there is a way to make a corset work for me. I have a couple of corsets, but they push my tummy even farther down making sitting difficult. Without one I can't walk far before I have a muscle spasm in my back and sciatica pain running down my leg. I rather suspect I'm not a candidate for corsets but wanted another's opinion. The back pain has left me unable to do much more than sit and sew or paint. I used to be very strong and active. Thanks for your time.e.

    • @mond5004
      @mond5004 13 дней назад +3

      Any corset can be worn with trousers, but you'll need to be prepared for the shape it gives. For most people, the fleshy "squish" if they get any squishes downward. You'll need to account for that in your trousers. Get ones in a larger size if needed. Then you might need to take in the trouser waist to avoid the trousers riding up or twisting around while wearing. A pair of trousers with a higher waist and wider hip to begin with will be helpful. You should take your measurements of your waist, upper hip and lower hip while wearing a corset so that you can check the trousers to see if they will fit.
      I often wear trousers with my corsets for my day job. It looks a little different than what people are accustomed to seeing (we aren't really and hourglass figure society any more), but it's comfortable for me, and that's what matters!

      You want to look for a person who has experience in making corsets. Most seamstresses cannot make corsets. Corsetiers know how corsets work with the body and how to fit them to the body. I suggest looking specifically for an atelier or corsetier in your area. There are also a few on Etsy who offer various price points (atelier sylphe is one such and she does excellent work). Keep in mind that hiring this done is not cheap. At the cheap end, you might look at $600 for fitting, adjusting and final making of a custom fitted coset. Some go much higher depending on the services and materials.

    This video made me ready to start wearing a corset. I don't have a sewing machine. Can I sew one by hand fairly easily, or where can I get a properly fitted corset? I feel like I just found a new rabbit hole to go down.

    • @nadjar.-f.7606
      @nadjar.-f.7606 13 дней назад +2

      Remember Stays and corsets were worn long before swing machines existed. Sure you can make one by hand but it will take longer and can be a little bit hard to pinch through some layers of fabric. maybe you can go down the rabbithole a little bit further and Look at the different corset types during history. Sewing machines were invented in the 19th century I think. I can recommend the channel of Bernadette Banner, Nicole Rudolph, Morgan Donner, sewthroughtime, Priorattire (she has a Shop too, I think) and Abby Cox too for diving deeper in historical corsetry.

      Real talk: I pretty much started my sewing journey by making my first and so far only pair of stays by hand. While I actually surprisingly liked the fit initially, it was definitely a lengthy process and sometimes a chore. I took so long making it that I literally grew out of it, which was rather frustrating.
      BUT! There are a ton of incredible free resources and youtube tutorials on stay and corsetmaking. Just check the description of a corsetry youtuber video, they often give free patterns. Lucy's corsetry, Snappy Dragon, Morgan Donner, Bernadette Banner, Abby Cox, Cathy Hay and many more are fantastic resources on the topic. It's definitely alot more doable than I initially thought, but it's still a lengthy project, and you can't cut corners during the tedious fitting process - you WILL kick yourself down the line for not making and trying on that third mockup for a few days. Ask me how I know.
      Also, maybe don't do what I did. Don't start your sewing journey with a project as complex as a corset or stays. It'll feel rather overwhelming. 😅

      @mond5004 13 дней назад +2

      You should not have to lace them every time they are worn. I suggest looking up ways to re-lace your corset so that it is easier to get on or off. Not all corsets are laced to tie at the waist. You could try lacing yours so it ties at the bottom. Even fan lacing might be an option, but it would probably require some minor modifications to the corset.

      Bernadette Banner has scoliosis and wears corsets. Maybe she has something you can learn from?

    • @mond5004
      @mond5004 13 дней назад

      I have lumbar scoliosis. I make cosets and I wear corsets with trousers. It is possible, but keep in mind that for most people who wear a corset, they tend to squish downward, so hip measurements will be very different. You may need to buy larger sized trousers to accommodate the hip measurement and then take in the waist a bit to get them to fit well.
      As for sewing a corset, The classes are very useful for teaching the basics of construction and fitting. Keep in mind that when you are asymmetrical, you will need more measurements than the basic patterns and drafting guides tell you to take. You will need your center front (busk) length, waist, over bust, underbust (useful to divide this to front and back or even right front, left front, right back, left back if you have a rib/shoulder hunch), upper hip (and lower hip for long-line corsets), BOTH underarm side measurements, possibly the side back measurements or shoulder to waist measurements (depending on your asymmetry), and any other area of asymmetry. After that, it's just a matter of adjusting or drafting your pattern accordingly. In the mock-up, you should add boning along side the seams (not over them) so that you can make adjustments more easily. Don't be afraid to add more padding to one bust or hip than the other. It will probably take many mockups to get to a wearable stage. Hope this helps.

    • @KatherineSewing
      @KatherineSewing  12 дней назад +1

      Yes, Bernadette Banner has scoliosis and has info on some of her corset videos about corsets and scoliosis. Corsets can absolutley be worn with pants, you just need the right fit and style. My class does teach everything you need to know to make a custom fit corset. Please consult your healthcare provider to find out if corsets are right for you. You may want a corset with no waist reduction, for example.

      Great question, it's one I wondered about quite a bit before I started wearing corsets while nursing. I personally have been able to nurse just fine in a historical "mid-bust" corset, or underbust corset. It's the more modern overbust corsets that would need some kind of nursing adaptation.

    • @mond5004
      @mond5004 13 дней назад +2

      Personally, I prefer earlier periods. By the late-Edwardian era, the focus was more on smoothing out he hips than providing back or bust support (women even started wearing a separate bust garment in this period to provide extra bust support). But it depends where your scoliosis is. Mine is in my lumbar spine and is a single curve (C-shaped). If you have a double scoliosis, or a curve higher up toward the thoracic area, what you find comfortable might be different. Keep in mind that a corset isn't supposed to close at the back. A 2-4 inch gap down the center back allows the spine to do its twisty thing, while the boning to the side supports the muscles.

      @ I do chiropractic and exercise and other things like that, in order to control what could otherwise become out of hand. I would love to add hip pads to it to make it more Edwardian S-bend and hourglass. Maybe I should just begin with the S-bend corsets since I love them the best.
      What I’m asking is which corset would best supplement my needs when I add it to what I’ve already been doing.

    Okay but getting one that fits when it's difficult enough to find a 32F bra is another story. (I have always wanted a REAL one, but I'm not rich enough to hire a private seamstress, here.)

      Yes - To be fair, I have the same bra size and have found it's easier to get a corset to fit than a bra, due the lacing adjustability and other factors. I'm not rich enough to hire a private seamstress either, which is why I learned to make my own.

      @@KatherineSewingOkay. I'm a 30HH or L or something ridiculously enough to drive me mad and I can't keep up with the cup craziness... I've been considering corsets and stays for years because there are zero bras that are comfortable. What I want is something that holds the ladies up !! and away from each other !! without digging into me everywhere and I can't tell if corsets can do that....can they? The skin irritation from sweat on hot days drives me up the wall.

      Fan lacing might be the best solution for you. You would pull from the sides in a fan-laced corset. Alternatively, you could try a front closing pair of bodies or stays instead.

    Hi Katherine. I was wondering how to get a good for when you have a significant belly. I've had triplets and have had 2 c- sections and have a belly that hangs over. I'm not confident in pattern drafting even though I've been seeing for almost 30 years. I would love to hear your thoughts.

    • @KatherineSewing
      @KatherineSewing  11 дней назад

      That's a great question. Your best bet, if you want to buy a corset, would be working with a corset maker who can make the corset to your body measurements and body shape. You can send them photos and even have them mail you a mock-up. In terms of making your own, you can start with a corset pattern that you buy and alter the tummy to have a little more room. There are also historical styles of corsets more conducive for a tummy - namely, the late 1800's spoon busk corsets. The metal busk actually cups around the lower tummy and can be quite supportive.

      Do not do it if you are pregnant. Even a "pregnancy corset" will increase the pressure pushing downwards. Look at the images... And this certainly is not good. If anything, we need to lift the belly up. There are support belts, that go underneath the belly.

    • @KatherineSewing

      Historically, men often wore corsets. Off the top of my head, especially in the 1500s to 1700s. In the 1500s, it to help give them a look called a peascod belly, if I remember my costume history correctly. But yeah, there's no reason men can't wear them.

      Not dumb at all! Yes, man can absolutely get the same benefits from corsets, and in fact, many men in history wore corsets as well. Typically, these had a different shape to women's, and were designed to give men a fashionable, masculine torso shape.

      Tight lacing is a completely different thing than normal corset wear, which in many cases doesn't reduce the waist at all. Corsets wouldn't have lasted for 400 years if they were solely tools of bodily destruction.
