- Today I am opening an authenticated sealed cello box of 1981 Topps Baseball Cards. The top rookie cards in the set are Harold Baines, Tim Raines, Kirk Gibson and Fernando Valenzuela/Mike Scioscia. Would we find any of them? Check it out and see.

1981 Topps were the first cards I ever bought as a kid. The only place near me that had them was a local deli. BMX bikes with friends for a sammich, candy, and cards became a regular thing that year. I remember trading a Henderson for a Rose, my buddy was so honest that he wanted to make sure the Henderson was not a rookie card before he allowed the trade to be final. And as an update, he is still a good guy to this day, and I still have the Rose card to this day as well.

You don't flip cards you ruin them that way
I always loved the big hat set! most '80s topps are great. I'm not much for 85 though. Awesome to see these being opened. I remember opening 83, but not 81 or 82 back then.
The very 1st baseball cards I ever owned. I traded my neighbor Voltron for 2 shoe boxes full of these back in the early-mid 80's.

I was 7 when these came out and I remember walking to the corner store with my sister to buy a few packs. I have always loved this design. The big hats were the best!!

It's amazing how off center the cuts are. They really improved the process over the years :). Fun break!

Awesome break man. 1981 was the year I began collecting baseball cards. Of course sold all I had in the mid-80's (kept loose in a big brown box, of course) at a yard sale for $8 (along with original Star Wars cards). Hey, that was a lot of money to a kid back then! LOL 🤣
Jeff Bagwell's mother comes in to my work a couple times a month and she said next time she comes she'll bring in an autographed card of him, she's so sweet! I started working a week after he came in with her and he was taking photos with some of our employees, darn it! lol.

A very nice cello box of a beautiful card set.. This brings me back when I was 8 years old and was my first year collecting baseball cards. My mom bought me a 1981 rack pack from a Ben Franklin store in Michigan at that time and I was hooked collecting since that day. I sadly ruined the checklists and team cards by using pen marks to see who I had acquired. Overall I enjoy this Topps set.
I spent all my money as a kid buying 81 Topps. I was focused on getting All-Star & Red Sox cards.
3 non-rookies graded psa 10 in this '81 set are absolute fire...Nolan Ryan, Pete Rose, and Ricky Henderson

Breaking unopened material is typically a losing proposition, but its fun to watch. You should do a vending break sometime.
Its amazing how many complete games Fernando had in '86. 34 starts and 20 complete games. And btw he racked up 21 wins. You probably would not get 20 complete games from the entire league combined. I missed the work horse pitcher like Nolan, Rodger, and Maddux. I have a great memory with my uncle watching that Kirk Gibson homerun.

Always loved this set. At one of the first card shows that I went to as a kid in the early 90s I bought a Mookie Wilson / Hubie Brooks / Juan Berenguer rookie card for $.50 and thought I made out like a bandit.
Love your videos, but boy did you screw up with that Dave Martinez call.... LOL. Keep the videos coming man, we enjoy watching them! Love these 1981 Topps cards too..... I was in middle school in 1981 and remember buying packs with my lawn mowing money.... If I recall correctly, I could buy a few packs and some candy bars for a dollar. Such a worry-free and innocent time.... Playing little league, buying packs, and watching TWIB (This week in Baseball with Mel Allen) was all I needed!
That's my era of good memories!

The 1981 backs had the same baseball-with-number card numbers as the 1973 set, which was my first year. It was a really sharp set for its time. (II've managed to reacquire most of it.)

Another great throwback Thursday
I've been watching your videos lately and they've got me back into getting cards. I pretty much stopped in 2013 but before I stopped I ended up getting a Bryce Harper 2012 topps auto RC #661 in a blaster box from my Walmart easily my best card ever.
I think the Bain’s and the s Brett are the nicest looking cards. They look pretty centered and sharp.
Awesome old packs. I love digging for hidden gem cards also.
Cool throwback. I am thinking my son and I should work on this set after we complete the 1974 Topps set. We just finished 1980. Hoping to do all 1970’s and the early ‘80’s.
TBT should be 1984 Donruss. Would love to see that. One of the nicest looking cards ever created.

Fernando velanzuela was the one pitcher i always heard people talking about when i was a kid...that he was great and all that. So i always tho he actually made to the HoF but i just learn from Sir Erik Jabs he didnt...learn something new everyday. Nice break.

These were the first cards that I bought. I struggled to get the Steve Garvey. I recently bought the Garvey from this set that was autographed.

Stunning how off cut these are out of the box. Complacent at the Topps in early 80's. no wonder GM10 cards get high dollar. super rare to get one just right.

I wonder how difficult vintage cello packs are to tamper (vs rack packs from same era, junk wax Score, 1989 Upper Deck, 1990 Leaf, 1991/92 Stadium Club, and present-day Topps which has had pretty much same packaging type since mid 90s)?

Baseball card exchange takes the ones with good player on them and then puts other rack pack in there place..I knew a guy that worked for them

6:24 My very first Card...also was "MY" player. Tiger fan and Steve Kemp was THE player at the time. Gibby, Tram, Morris...not yet the stars they would become. Kemp was the big dog. In 1980 Kemp hit .293 with 21 HR's (that was good at the time) 101 RBI He was a good young player.
I got an autographed Tom Brookens from this year.......... I know him. A#1 guy!! JJ from Chb Pa. Tom still lives in Fayetteville.

I bought a 1989 Fleer box from Bbce & got a Billy Ripken F-face error.. So they are definitely not searched
It seems that a lot of these are way off center top/bottom. The Fernando rookie looks almost cut off at the bottom, horizontally. I don't remember these being that bad when I was a kid, then again, I was just happy collecting cards lol.
How do I get a pack
Use the 93 Beckett's or 94 ones to have crazy prices on cards that's when the boom was going on

I love 81 Topps but let’s be real. There just aren’t very many cards of note in this set. If it wasn’t for the grading industry this would still be a $40 box. That’s great for investors but sucks for the casual collector who wants to build their own set from wax and cello.
Completely agree. Watching this vid validates the question I had when upgrading my complete 81 set a few years ago, "why are there so many miscut cards"? Wonder if the run for cellos was done after the standard wax pack printing....cause the guys running the cutting machine had a pretty rough go!

I don't think it's mold on the gum I think it's ink from the back of the card. Regardless idk whether id want mold or ink poisoning
