Esholt Village is a fantastic and beautiful village in it's own right and it's well worth a wander around it to see the amazing cottages, church, village hall, post office and of course the Woolpack Pub which is right at the heart of the village and of course the Emmerdale TV show.
Esholt is a village in the Metropolitan Borough Of Bradford, West Yorkshire. It was used for the village scenes for Emmerdale from 1976 to 1997 until they moved to a purpose built replica of Esholt, the Emmerdale Village on the Harewood Estate.
Before 1976, for the first 3 and a half years of the show, they had filmed the village scenes in Arncliffe, North Yorkshire. As Arncliffe was a long way from the Yorkshire Television Studios, Leeds, they decided to find a village closer to the studios.
There still is an Emmerdale Village Tour coming to Esholt, but also be aware that there is also a different Emmerdale Village Tour that takes you to the new Emmerdale filming location at Harewood House.
Esholt is a small village in West Yorkshire in between Shipley and Guiseley and just north of the city of Bradford. The village is situated in the Metropolitan District of Bradford. The name "Esholt" indicated the village was settled in a heavily wooded area of ash trees.
In 1975 Esholt was chosen as the village to film the village scenes of the ITV soap opera Emmerdale Farm. Before that, filming previously took place in the Littondale village of Arncliffe, North Yorkshire but a location closer to the Yorkshire Television Studios, Leeds was chosen. Esholt looks very different to Arncliffe.
The pub in Arncliffe was overlooking a green, whereas in Esholt it was on a main street. So the shows makers had to come up with an idea to explain the different looking Woolpack in the show!
In 1995, when the producers decided that Emmerdale was to be shown 3 times a week, the location filming schedule in Esholt got heavier.
Due to more filming required because of a 3rd weekly episode, plus tourists flocking on the village, as well as the residents always having to move their cars, and stay indoors during shots, and tourists being asked not to get into shot or take photographs, that the decision was made that a purpose built replica of Esholt was to be built, well away from the public at Harewood House.
In December 1997, after 22 years of filming the "Emmerdale Village" scenes there, the Emmerdale production team waved goodbye to Esholt and this meant the villagers would not have to put up with the filming disrupting their lives any more. However tourists would continue to flock on the village, and do so to this day.

@William Madden I use FlixZone. Just google for it =)
I try to walk through whenever I visit home from Canada. As children we played in the woods around the village and gathered wood for bonfire night. I laughed the first time I saw Emerdale Farm, the clean farmers and their polished tractors. Not like the Scott's, Emsley's and Gaythorpe farmer's not too far away. That's the magic of Television. The area is beautiful and to stop for a pint in the old Commercial now the Woolpack is always nice. The last time I walked through with my 21 year old grandson I had to phone my brother to come and pick us up my 70yr old weren't up to the rest of the walk, we'd covered quite a bit of ground by then. Emmerdale is still going strong and has a good following in Canada.I needed this, Covid-19 spoiled our planned trip for this year we were married 50yrs in Sept. and were planning on visiting family and friends.
That's such great memories thank you for sharing
Hopefully you can get back again soon!
We moved down esholt in 1962. I was a little girl with mum and dad and my two sisters. We lived at home farm cottage .on past the sewage works. I went to the village school as seen your film. There was only 12 pupils in the whole school. Dad worked on esholt estate with a team of painters .home farm cottage had a wood yard adjacent to it. It,s all privately owned now. In time esholt sewage works and estate was sold out to yorkshire water I think. Many happy memories down there. We moved away when I was 12. We was the smith family and lived at home farm cottage.
Ah wow thank you for the info Jacqui!
I bet it was peaceful and quiet living there?
How lovely a beautiful area
Showing my age I remember Amos & Mr Wilks opening the new Woolpack, subsidence to the old building was the excuse to cover up the move 😄 I see they must call it the Woolpack all the time now, on non filming days those signs used to come down and the pub would go back to its proper name.
Cheers 👍
Amos was my all time favourite TV character! I used to love watching him on the show!
Yeah think the Woolpack was originally called The Commercial Inn (in real life) but took the name Woolpack permanently years later
I'm sure the original name was the Fleece when it wasn't being filmed as the Woolpack.
@@martinnaylor I couldn't remember Martin acc. to wiki it was the Commercial Inn and the Falcon Inn when they were in Arncliffe.
The Fleece does ring a bell with me on something though, gonna bug me now 😂
Edit. Fleece is in Haworth if that's where I'm remembering it from?
Thought it might have been the Drovers from All Creatures but that's the King's Arms in Askrigg.
See what you've done to me 😂
That's it the Commercial. 👍👍
I Love this village..my son lives in bradford so when i go to visit him i have to drive by the backdrop scenery of emmerdale,i drive through weeton village and the scenery is unbelievable..esholt gorgous village. me and my cousin went in woolpack one day for a pint,my cousin tried to pinch a pint glass..the barman came after us asking for his glass back..anyway great vid..keep up the good work..
ha ha give the glass back!! 🤣
The Woolpack is currently closed down as the Landlord gave up and left sadly
Your right this is a beautiful village 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I remember Mr Wilkes ha ha!
Brilliant as usual, and a bit of history that I didn't know,, thrown in too👍
Thank you so much!
Its a beautiful village remember going there a while ago
Thank you for watching Ann!
I was born in Bradford ( now in Corfu) , walked to Esholt many a time with my boyfriend, down through Thackley woods, on through the Esholt sewage works and estate and on to Esholt, a beautiful walk , blue bells, wild garlic and rhododendrons, then a Lowenbrau and packet of Walkers cheese n onion crisps at the then Commercial ! Completed the walk going over the river Aire and up to the canal.....hoping the swing bridge was in place! Thanks for the memories, beautiful village!
Great video. I went to Esholt years ago, and have been to the new village set at Harewood. The show did visually change a lot when location filming switched from Arncliffe to Esholt in 1976, as while the farm was the main focal point, the village always did feature, and the old Woolpack had to be vacated and a new pub found, to coincide with the real life move.
Last I heard the Woolpack had closed - hopefully it will reopen
My husband and I visited anholt its a beautifull place
It really is!
I have visited Esholt many times as I only live in Bradford. My favourite character was Amos. Great video!
Thank you! Another Amos fan here too! Loved him!
Chas dingle and charity dingle are my favourite characters in emmerdale
Great vlog love this place been there with my wife keep smiling and carry on making vlogs
Thank you so much Melvin! I hope you like the other videos I've made!
Thank you for watching my channel I really appreciate it! 👍
What did happen to the old farm house that the sugdens lived in?
A very lovely village I used to live not far from the very first old farm house with Annie Sugden used to pass it many times. 👍👍👍🥰
I nearly filmled the first old farm house - iti's worth a lot of money now!
Was that Lindley farm in Leathley.
Nice video. The village of Esholt is only 4 mile from my home, yet Ive only visited once and that was for a drink in the 'Woolpack' Thanks for the video.
You're welcome! Sadly the Woolpack is now totally closed until they can find new owners/landlord :(
Nice vlog there,I only live five minutes away from Esholt in Saltaire so have been plenty of times, if you haven't already Saltaire would be a good place for you to film, plenty of history around the village and Salts Mill.
Ah Saltaire - not been there yet - have just added to my filming list
Thank you so much Martin!
No problem. 😊
My caracter favourite is Aaron Dingle...and the uncle Cain Dingle and Robert,Jackson..🥰
Love Emmerdale
You will like this little explore!
Can’t wait!
We used to get to visit all kinds of places in Yorkshire.
Went to Esholt on a whim a few years back. I was in the area with a group of kids and we stopped by for a lemonade at the Woolpack. They got their photo taken outside, but I don't think they appreciated the significance like the adults did 😀😀 It's a lovely, traditional Yorkshire village, set in beautiful countryside. I'm off there for a visit again soon, hopefully.
Ah great stuff - have fun!
Just been here today and looks smaller than the filming location they have now . But lovely to see .
I have also Visited the Emmerdale Experience In Leeds next door to the current Sets
Nice - I want to do that too!
i have been to esholt a long time ago and still got the pics standing on the steps of the woolpack loved it
Ah lovely! It's a lovely little village isnt it!
Very good video.
Nice place .
Thank you very much!
It's how I remember Emmerdale as a kid so just had to go visit!
Years since I was in Esholt and it wasn’t as an Emmerdale fan. But got to admit that the ‘new’ set on the Harewood Estate is more private for the film makers. The warehouse at Yorkshire TV for the indoor sets too.
Yes very true!
I was there when Mark Charnock made his first appearance in the soap. And many other memorable occasions. Met a lot of the cast on our frequent visits and have to say that they were all really friendly especially Chris Chittell.
Ah nice! I'd loved to have met Amos. He was my favourite of all time!
Grate place
Agreed!
I remember visiting Esholt many years ago before the Current Outdoor Village was built at the Harewood Estate
Nice! It's an interesting day out isn't it!
I was a Special Constable in those days and policed the roads / car parking for the cricket match that Emmerdale had yearly !! When i went off duty myself and family were invited into the private bar and met all the cast.
Ah now I"m really jealous
Did you ever meet Amos?
@@GimbalWalkTV Yes and all the original Sugdan's too
I enjoyed every video, it’s like I’m walking with you, have you met anyone from the Emmerdale when you were there? I will give you a 10/10. Thank you keep going
Thank you John! No - never seen an Emmerdale star sadly. Would love to though!
Never heard of the place as I don't watch Emmerdale but looks a nice village
Yeah it’s really peaceful and quiet
Yes go for it.
👍👍👍
Was taken here 23 years ago. Imagine my confusion that the post office looked nothing like the one in Emmerdale, but I still have the tea towel with Esholt on it.
Ha ha I was the same! Also the Woolpack inside!
Yes I have been to Esholt back in the 80s and had a few pints in the woolly. It is not the same as in emmerdale as all internal shots are done at Yorkshire television studios. But the village is beautiful.
Agreed!
Lovely vid.🙂
Thank you so much!
I remember coming here just after they did the plain crash that must have been difficult to do in a real village lots of disturbing the people who really live here I always liked jack sugden a real looking farmer could you please do heartbeat 👍
Will do!
Oh, this looks like a lovely 'chocolate box' English village, how nice !! I have never heard of or seen Emmerdale, so don't recognize anything - actually I thought it was a radio programme 🤔 Excuse my ignorance as I don't have a TV nor do I listen to the radio !!
Anyway, enjoyed the walk around, and your notes in the description. Keep em coming 😀👍💯
Thank you Jo! It's a fab little place to visit - especially in Summer!
Beautiful village, a little one for the diehard fan, but I was kinda hoping you were gonna walk a little further towards the end down that road and show us the houses of Demdyke Row which in the soap was destroyed after the plane crash.
Ah the good.old days of Emmerdale with Annie, Jack, Joe, Seth Armstrong and the like. Wasn't the pub called The Commercial Inn back in the day? And the Woolpack in the shows.
Yeah that's correct! Good memories there!
aron in emmerdale is a dear friend of mine
Ah nice!
Devon Blue Danny Miller Is a amazing Actor
been to esholt many a time . would say don't like what they have done inside the woolpack but love the old photos
The Woolpack has shut down now by the looks of it Paul
@@GimbalWalkTV oh no . Not another pub gone.
I have a friend who has been to esholt
Nice! It’s a nice little village ❤️
Yes lets just get round the post van for a better view of my stedad delivering the mail. 😂 this is the most iv seen him all of lockdown 🤣.
Thanks for the emmerdale memories though too ❤
Ah ha ha nicely timed! He said hello to me too - very happy friendly man! Say hello from me!
@@GimbalWalkTV i will. And will definitely have to take a trip to Esholt. Right on my doorstep and iv never been. 🙂
Is he still the current postman,if so i saw him yesterday as i did a walk round Esholt called the Esholt loop from near Apperley Bridge. It was 9.7km and i included some filming at Esholt village.
Hi can I suggest you have an explore of the small market town Pateley bridge in Nidderdale . I've never been before before but apparently it lies on the river Nidd and has the oldest sweet shop in the world according to Google.
Ooooh I've not heard of there before Jamie - the place name and area sound like something out of a book!
Have added to my list and will investigate filming there! Thank you!
Can you just turn up or do you have to book the tour?
For the tour of the actual studios and the new filming location you have to book in advance I think - www.emmerdalevillagetour.co.uk/
Great video, but you forget nick and Seth's house at demdyke row :)
Ooh yes you’re right
Apologies my error / will film it on the next one this summer!
@@GimbalWalkTV cool :)
Are there many steep hilly sections on the village tour does anyone no please
Not really a very steep hill
There’s a slight wall down to the village but not even a slope really or a hill
The original filming location I can walk here as I don't live very far from it but it's now filmed in Leeds.
Yeah it's moved to a specially built set in Harewood!
Did you show eric Pollards wine bar on this video
Good question am not sure!
@@GimbalWalkTV You skipped Cleg's and Howarth's Home
I lived in Bradford in the mid to late 70s and we used to go to The Commercial for a pint on a Saturday afternoon after work. Only once were they filming when we were there and I nearly got run over by Joe Sugden in his Land Rover The sewers were a bit ripe at times if the wind was blowing the wrong way.
ha ha ha I'd heard about the sewers!
Imagine getting run over by Joe Sugden - what a way to go! 🤣
Made to visit to Esholt 20+ years ago. No visitors cars aloud, had to par, and walk in. Visited The Woolpack, expecting the inside to be like we knew it,was greatly disappointed.Have visited the Emmerdale experience in Leeds.
Ah how was the Emmerdale Experience? Worth doing?
have you ever been to batley where the variety club used to be
Years ago but never filmed it - have just added to my list! Thank you so much for the suggestion Paul - much appreciated!
I have performed at batley variety a few years ago in a show . Lovely venue ...
Did u go for a pint in the woolpack after filming 🍺😝
It is shut at the moment - been in before - it's nothing like how it is on TV - totally different pub!
charty dingle thankyoupaul brown
👍
Do they still use Esholt for filming odd scenes
Dont think so Tony - not now they've got a full size version studio thingy!
Once they went back for the (vicar) in 2016 Ashley Thomas, they’ve done a special episode about his dementia.
They even filmed in side the Woolpack.
