I have had several Sprinters and it is the rust blisters that get them every time. Eventually it becomes untenable trying to chase the millions of chips that rapidly turn to rust. The guy who sprays these at the factory deserves an award for spraying a whole van with about half a litre of paint!
Yep, it’s a never ending job :)
@@Antonia.Bradley Annual anyway. There are lots of weird tips on stopping rust between repairs... Molasses, Vaseline, and all the magical undercoating sprays.
And all of these sprinter they got rust in same places😁 like here and mine has too, so jts like they mist something on those areas😁
Sprinter vans are rust buckets (For the enormous price tags). Great vehicles, but they have to make the bodies more rust proof.
That looks bloody brilliant. You don’t fancy coming to do our rust spots do you 😃
Thank you so much Greg :) me beams with pride. It’s the first time I’ve ever done something like that. RUclips is such a great teaching and learning resource.
Thank you so much for posting this... have a bunch of spots on my van, now I know how to fix myself. Again, thank you!
Beautiful job, especially on the large highly visible rust bubble. My repairs look like a quilt, but only close-up
About the time you posted the video, I have very successfully sanded out the rust bubbles, sanding until I reach clean primer or clean metal.... rust will be LARGER than the visible, by at LEAST 50%. Keep sanding until you hit uncontaminated metal or primer, that is what has worked for the long-term, though I hated to paint an area over 8 sq inches in one area.
My sprinter is a 2007, so perfection is not required. I used a sandable primer and Duplicolor ( a joke, not even similar ) paint. I masked off SQUARES where I sanded and prepped. They ARE visible up close, but not from 12' or more, unless you are seeking them out. For a company work vehicle, it does look good. People often ask if the van is NEW.
I am a locksmith, and I have NO air tools, no autobody tools other than trim pad removers. Today I just finished sanding out a bunch of bubbles... they ALL were in the slider and the corner bottom wheel well, at the slider juncture.
My only tools were a Rockwell oscillating tool, and the sanding kit that came with it. I have had this in the van for service call, in case I needed it... never touched the tool in 5 years. Found a use for it today. It worked exceptionally well.
I never would use body filler, unless there was a dent, or the metal had rusted through... Build-up primer and sand, repeat over n over n over... I am not giving ANYONE body work instructions, just the results of having tried it various ways.
The result would look like the CIA redacted my van, if I sprayed the repairs in black.
definitely gave me confidence to sort my T5 out too!
Great vid, thanks for this, gives me confidence to finally tackle my crafters rusty bits. In exactly the same place by the the way 👍
Go for it, if I can do it anyone can :)
Yes I saw it was in the same place, go for it :)
great job, given me confidence to tackle my rust, one thing though, I would wear a mask next time
Great video, I like the brash brush head on the drill idea very tidy for small spots of rust, I just got a transit converted which has a few small spots of rust so I'm going to use your process.
Thx so much, I hope it works out well for you too :)
Try soft edge to spray out to. No edge to polish out . And get a power file will speed the whole lot up . Good effort though
Good video, I feel confident to attack the spots on my sprinter now. Thanks.
Thank you for your kind comment, good luck with your van :)
@Antonia.Bradley I know this was a few years ago but intrigued to know how this method held up and if you ended up needing to retreat it? (Don't want my DIY attempt to make the problem worse!)
Hi Hamish, well interesting question. Tomorrow I shall, weather permitting, I shall take a photo of the area to show you. Even though I live in the van I’ve not closely inspected the are recently. But I think it’s pretty good. I’m not sure how to post a picture on here though. Do you want to find me on Facebook???
Great stuff and effective result on a small budget.
Thank you :)
Looks great ! I was hoping to see a square-on side shot / video of the largest area that you repaired as opposed to the acute angle which we saw 😐
Oh yes sorry but it was a couple of years ago now.
@@Antonia.Bradley much appreciated , your video really helped myself repair my UK LWB Mercedes Sprinter anyway , thanks ! 👍
Tip. Fold the tape in half then stick the sticky part on the outside leaving the folded tape closest to the area you will spray. It gets underneath without leaving that hard edge it blends in more
Excellent job and thanks for posting it 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
i had some as you with my vito and sprinter over the years plus bigger rust parts used a binder with steal brush built into it to blast it all off then harreited it like you then painted it in haperite paint then thick primer sand then all down until level then paint them all over in a different colour mercs are rust like hell oh but in the harite paint that's full cover of the van paint then sand all down then paint it again what ever colour I do usually mat black.
very useful thanks for a SAAB 900 that need some attention
Wow that was really enjoyable haha you should make more videos like this. Btw which year is your sprinter?
Hi! Thx :) it’s a 2014
Mine has rusted on the exact same areas!
Hi, yes they do tend too, I still have a few ‘lesser’ spots still to do on the left side of the van. I found the task easier than I thought to be honest.
I looked for a one, two or three year paint repair update. . how did it go ? did it last? what would you have done differently?
Hi, yes the repair on the top rear panel and the bubble near the door have held up very well so far. There are a few other spots of rust coming up now around the sliding door that I will have to deal with this summer, so I may do an update video when I do those.
dont dip the brush onto rust then dip into the tub you contaminate the rest of the Kurust . use a seperate container
OK thanks, I will be careful not to do that again Thx :)
@@Antonia.Bradley great job though .nice finish
Nice job 👍 spot on 👌
I'm just running into the same issues with my sprinter, thanks for the video as I'm confident to give it a go now. Whats the catchy tune playing in the background? Thanks again 😀
Hi, thanks. The tune is foreign land by The great James Kirby, check him out :)
Brilliant thanks, great artist!
Great video and finish on the van! What paint did you use? I have tried the Halfords Mercedes Arctic White and the colour match is terrible. I am hoping to tackle the exact same rear panel spot on mine.
Hi, yes I used the Halfords Arctic white myself so I’m not sure why yours didn’t look right. What age is your van, the colour code may be different. Mine matched perfectly.
@@Antonia.Bradley Strange. Mine is a 2103. The Halfords paint came out with a creamy tint to it after a test near the wheel arch so I was concerned about trying on an upper panel.
Well, the only thing that comes to mind is that the Halfords tin may be old, or mislabelled. Having used several Halfords tins on mine that came out very white indeed, I have no clue as to why, sorry
I just had the same, Halfords match was terrible
Great video though!!
Is this paint called artic white by any chance that's what mercedes told me to use. Artic White code 9147 . I have done the same kind or repair on my sprinter but the paint is coming up a cream white as compared to the brighter white of the original colour. Any idea why? So far i have put three coats on and no laquer.
Hi, Artic white is the colour on the older Mercs I think I used that colour on my old T1. I’m sorry but I cannot recall the number of the one I used.
@@Antonia.Bradley Thanks
Lovely job 👍😊
Thank you! 😊
Nicely done, cannot believe it is the first time)
The thing is, you will see the rust bubbling through within a year, two tops
To have it sorted for a longer time, the key is to SANDBLAST it (doable even as a DIY)
Then there are more ways to continue
For instance there are convenient non-porous fillers (holding way better, than usual soft fillers) and topcoat w 2k acrylic paint
Hi Vilem, thanks yes I’m expecting to have to do it again at some point. Thing is.... I’m living on a tiny pension so had to do it as in expensively as possible :( as it was it cost me £45 to do. Maybe next time I will get myself a sand blasting unit :)
Do not see why the rust should reassert itself. Kurust is a rust converter and provides complete protection and if covered in good filler and a couple of coats of paint it should give total protection. This assumes that the rust did not completely penetrate the panel, in which case, short of welding in a patch plate, fibre glass or aluminium gauze would reinforce the repair. This was a good job and very instructive.
@@barry-cq4xg you obviously dont have years of experience with rusty panels
only sandblasting (lazer blasting) and welding new panels is the long term solution
rust converters dont penetrate the whole rust of the standard panel, hence it does show up in couple of years again, despite having the best topcoat you can imagine
the rust always contains cavities with air/moisture, and if you dont completely remove it, it does bubble through again, as it is self-feeding, it doesn't need water/air from outside
the thicker the rust is, the faster it bubbles through again
rust convertor usually solve just a fresh rust and doesnt penetrate it further
for frame etc. oil based things like owatrol works better, still not 100%
@@francouz23 nice to hear it from a professional point of view. Thanks vilem, basically no cheap shortcuts to rust prevention.
Can you list the products you used for this and where you bought them?
Hi, I added the paint details and link to the description.... CAR VAN REPAIR KIT AEROSOL PAINT LACQUER PUTTY/FILLERS SANDPAPER FOR MERCEDES MERCEDES ARCTIC WHITE 147 9147 But you can also get Arctic white Merc paint from Halfords along with Primer and Lacquer etc.
did the car not have warrenty ?
No, the van was second hand 2014.
Oh sorry i thought it was a newer one but now i see @@Antonia.Bradley
What year is your Sprinter that is rusted
Hi, yes it’s 2014, generally it’s in great condition, just a few little rust scabs needing attention.
Don't rub your fingers on newly sanded areas the greases on your skin cause rust.
Another video with unnecessary music …Ditch it
Why?
