10 of the greatest, eh? Thats a subjective term...... Not a peep about EMD's or what I would consider the greatest diesel of them all, the Series 71 Detroit Diesel; It made its first appearance in 1937 and was produced through the 90's and theres still a lot out here. They were available as inlines 1, 2, 3, 4, & 6 and as V blocks: V6, V8, V12, V16 ,and V24 and a lot of parts were common to all models (3 cylinder and up). There were countless applications for these engines, the only things I think that never had a Detroit powering it were airplanes, but I may be wrong on that, lol.

Definitely represents ones opinion. I would replace some of the engines chosen with CAT's 3406B, 3406E & C-15 (not the C15 primarily because of emissions), Cummins 855 & N14 & Mack's ETAZ 673 with the Robert Bosch injection system & the E-6 2V & 4V. Some of the Deutz air cooled engines are pretty good. No mention of Deere's engines here either. Theres a lot of others to pick from as well. So the title Mayne should have had IMYO added to it. Nice video though, Thanks to the poster!!!

I agree with everything you are adding to the discussion but have a question. As an engine builder I always scratch my head as to why someone would list a B 3406 but not a C. The only ever so slightly better part of a b that was that the B was ease of fuel pump setting. All Mains- journals gears are much better on a C. So I guess the question remains as to what the perceived betterment is on the Bs? And to add one more to your list of great engines I've worked on K19 Cummins with 30,000hours.

It's an American list that doesn't even have the best American engines let alone the world's best! For amazing torque output look to the Swedish with their 16 litre diesels from Scania and Volvo, way superior to modern US truck engines. For mechanical perfection look to the old Gardner diesels from the UK, many still in use in maritime environment all over the globe that are many decades old. And from America, iconic Cummins NTC and NTE 14 litre engines, Cat 3406, Detroit 71 and 92. Could go on. Sorry but should be titled 'some engines I think are quite good.'

You forget the most important part of any engine and that is application, engine is almost always best in what it was engineered for and not always best transplanted in your hot rod truck as we love the 8.3 Cummins but it's to heavy for a one ton truck and that wrecks the engine for me, thousand pounds heavier than the B series that's already heavy in my book

The 1HZ, sold all over the world and still sold in third world countries after more than forty years.
Million miles are common if looked after.
But it was never sold in America so it doesn't actually exist

One mans opinion. MY opinion is that any list of great diesel engines that does not include the "Screaming Jimmy" two stroke General Motors line of diesels is simply not a complete list.

I think, you have to rate an engine against another, say equal HP vs makes of every country, eg US _100 HP vs British 100 HP German, Japanese, Chinese, let them run against each other ,,,,,

I used to have a 3408 cat in a 359 long nose Pete. Shed flat run down the road but you needed a fuel truck to follow you down the highway. She sure liked drinking the fuel.
