    To answer your question, the two cranes were to be used for the sport aviation display that were going to shoot balloons filled with explosive off a wire stretched over that part of the infield. they had been there all week and all pilots were briefed as to their location. Wanaka uses the hard runway and another grass strip which is clearly marked running parallel to each other. The grass strip was definitely not where the yak touched down. Thankfully the pilot escaped unharmed and the plane can be rebuilt. Thank you for your footage ray. it was great to relive my time at Wanaka

    Beautiful footage Ray. Nobody restores or rebuilds vintage aircraft like New Zealanders. I've seen that "Mossie" at air shows in both Canada and the USA. Not many sounds can match those two Merlins powering the wooden wonder through the air at 400 mph. If you are also a WWII aircraft junkie, you might enjoy my historical novel "Fighters, Bombers, Tanks, Wolves." Available at Amazon. Lots of technical detail about Messies, Spits, and Lancs. Cheers.

    Just a note, the P51 Mustangs are D models not B models. Thanks for the video.

    A BF109 with a Merlin?????? That's like putting a Chevy engine in a Ford

      The Spanish versions developed during and after ww2 had Merlin’s fitted to them.

    I know this video is older but does anyone know if the Yak 3 was repaired and still flying today?

  • @b577960
    @b577960 4 года назад

    Nicely put together, just a correction or two. The Mustang in the photo is a P-51D not a P-51B. Also the 'ME-109' is a Messerschmitt BF-109 it is not a ME-109 as everyone seems to call them.

    • @braidos.k3657
      @braidos.k3657 4 года назад

      Is it ME-109 in this case maybe because it had the MErlin in it? And wasn't an identical BF-109. Genuine question

    • @b577960
      @b577960 4 года назад

      @@braidos.k3657 Umm No, i still believe it should be BF-109

    • @omepeet2006
      @omepeet2006 3 года назад

      @@b577960 Actually, if you want to be pedantic, it's not a Messerschmitt at all. It's a licence-built copy, built by Hispano and labeled HA-1112.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispano_Aviación_HA-1112 will tell you more.

    I hope that yak wasnt original

    • @michaelknott4361
      @michaelknott4361 5 лет назад +2

      It was one of the new builds carried out by Yakovlev in the 1990s. Despite it being newly built, it is technically original because it was built by Yakovlev using the original tools and equipment to build it, apart from the Allison engine, of course.
