My friend worked at a dealership called me up & told me about this savage motorcycle. He sold 5 of them & 4 came back bent up. I had to have one. I have owned 3 of them since 1985. My current Max is a '93 purchased new. It has a long rod motor, some trans mods in the name of durability. It makes 150hp to the tire & just over 100 lb/ft. It's an amazing ride that never ceases to put a big smile on my face. It's the equivalent to a Hemi Cuda W/ a Blower through the hood, Just faster

You left out the $5k price difference. V Max's just don't break, and I have owned several now dating back to 1986. And if it does break, I don't need someone named Luigi in a white lab coat to fix it.

    • @brandonbowerstx

Just watched this and was about to jump in. VMAX is bulletproof maintenance. And that shaft drive will be kicking around long after that chain drive.

    • @MrUltraworld
      @MrUltraworld 8 лет назад +5

Brandon Bowers I looked hard at the Ducati, talked to owners, and read up on maintenance costs. Then I bought the V-Max. A simple reprogramer allows for full power at all rpm now. Keeping back tires on it is still an issue.
Aside a new fuel tank a few years ago, my '93 has never needed a repair, just maintenance that is pretty simple to do.

Javed faziljaved : Best to google that but I can tell you that top end goes up 30mph. Reflash, new exhaust and the airbox mod will get another 25hp to the wheel.

Some motorcycle enthusiasts will spend the extra "$5k" for the right to own an Italian Exotic Sport Bike over a ill-handling, overweight, poor braking V-Max. Comparing a Yamahog V-Max to any Italian Sport Bike is like comparing a pig to a fashion model. Me? I'd prefer riding the model! The V-Max is a confused bike. It appears to have been designed by three or four men who never met! One took a touring bike engine (Venture with different cam profiles, etc.) another a frame that sits the engine too high and another who forgot it needed good brakes to haul the obese pile of pork down from speeds. The end result is a bike that refuses to corner if going more than walking speeds, brakes bad due to the excess weight (it weighs more than a Harley) and to "top it off" (no pun intended) you can't gas the bastards up w/o spilling it out the fill hole because it's buried under the seat and the opening is about the size of a quarter. The "designers" had to "design" in a plastic funnel/tray to dump that spilled gas onto the ground through a little hose so it wouldn't soak the electronics. The bike is just one Hell of a mess! Magazine testers loved it but still pointed out it's excess weight, poor brakes and inability to lean in corners. One magazine of the day ended the text of the test with: "...until you come to the first curve." I have 3 or 4 period magazine tests and the only reason they never gave them scathing reviews is the "editors" were/are a bunch of zit-faced dorks who hate Harley-Davidsons and love rice rocket shit. That and they couldn't afford to lose Yamaha's advertising income. Before you come back with a foaming at the mouth, curse filled response, remember this: "I post nothing but facts, not opinion and have been riding since 1965." You should have known.

It's like people didn't watch the video and notice that they have almost the same quarter mile. The Vmax is a pig, lots of power but lots of weight too.
"Superbike destroyer" is absurd, superbikes aren't designed for the drag strip, and even outside their element they can beat the Vmax. Show the Vmax some corners on the other hand and wave all the real bikes goodbye as they pass you.

Rode the second generation V Max, and was very impressed with its straight line speed, and visceral sense of power. Then I threw it into a curve. Very imbalanced-tall and tippy, and the brakes were just eh. Disconcerting, for a bike that musters up this kind of velocity. It’s just not happy at anything less than a right angle to the road. Then rode a Diavel, and was sold. Brought it home that day. It will positively destroy a V Max in the twisties. I’d agree that for reliability, the Yammie is the better bet-Italians can be a bit high strung. Looks-wise, the Diavel is art. The V Max, well-a teenager going through puberty with a few hairs on his upper lip. 😏 Both are formidable bikes, but IMO, the Diavel is the one I continually look back at when I swing a leg over and walk away.

Vmax all the way. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to me, neither are what I'd call "pretty" bikes. But the Diavel looks kinda ridiculous, while the Yamaha just looks bad-ass. And yes: The Ducati is probably the better bike all around, but you don't buy vehicles like these with your head. If you did, Harely-Davidson would've gone bankrupt a long time ago. ;)

I have first gen versions of both.. just not thrilled with the looks of the 2nd Gen vmax.. also genuinely feel that the first gen diavel is better overall than the new one. the sound of that first gen vmax is fuck in amazing. mine has been converted to chain drive and bumped to 1428cc though.

I wouldn't even dignify the kid with a response BlueRockSoul. He's probably on a watch list because of his youtube channel. Personally I'd go for the VMax, but I am biased as I purchased an '07 for my first bike and love it!

WanderAbroad I live in Colorado, and have gone riding with my friends in the mountains. It does not do fast turns well (based on your corner radius and speed). If you are riding reasonably in the mountains and not looking to go nuts and drag your knee on the ground it is a fine bike. When riding on the interstate taking a 90degree corner where the posted speed limit is 75mph, don't do 100mph, the front tire will wobble. I cannot speak for the gen2 bikes as mine is the last year for the gen1 model, my tires are not nearly as wide as the gen2s.

I love the Vmax, I love the Diavel. I have owned both.....I prefer the Diavel. I still have the Diavel. I like twisty riding to go along with the muscle. Can't really go wrong with either. Both bikes are apex predators.

You can take a Ferrari 430 and a Pontiac GTO both down the dragstrip, still they are very different cars from eachother. The Ferrari is blisteringly fast down the dragstrip, but the Ferrari isn't purposely build for the dragstrap. But whatever. Have fun down at the dragstrip.
    Btw, I don't own a dirtbike though, I own an 848 ;)

The Harley Davidson Street Rod would have fit in with these two bikes, only if Harley had more forsight, made it a bit more aggressive and new how to market the bike to the proper crowd, and also about 40 more HP.
Most fun bike I have ever owned, a real Hot Rod, and the only V-Rod you can carve canyons with.

@@danmenefee5437 The best comment I've read by far, I bought two brand new Harleys, and both of them broke down before ten thousand miles. The last one was a '17 117 inch Road Glide, blew the rear cylinder base gasket. Harley wanted $2600 to "fix" it while "still" under warranty, did it on my own for $400. I now own a '17 V MAX, flashed, piped, and airbox mod, dynoed at 200 hp at the wheel, granted it may not turn the best at speed, but it'll make short work of most ANY bike, short of the ZX14, on the straights.

Have an 05 Max, love it. I also would like a Gen 2 Vmax, but because of the lack of engine guards, and the height of the seat, I have to rule it out. It is a great machine otherwise. I wish they had just done an overhaul of the Gen 1. They also would have sold alot more of them. I do not believe Yama sells many Gen 2's.

Yamaha only sell strict numbers as the gen 2 is a limited release from 2009 to the present day & the price is a little high for those who dont want to fork out dough for a real machine.
I prefer the gen2, the most badass bike haha...
      Happy riding

Murray Anderson I see the price for a new Gen 2 has been dropped some $2000. Still a bike that heavy and seating that high, with no engine guards is a invitation for disaster. I would probably go with the ZX14RR if I wanted all out performance, at a few $thousand saved. I really like the Gen 2, but those 2 items as well as finding someone who can service it properly rule it out for me. The Raider SCL, that has me thinking. :)

Come on, if you're going to drag race the bikes, then at least keep the helmet's visor down. At 6:37, Kevin has his helmet's visor popping down. Good review otherwise. Yamaha: increase the fuel tank to 5 gallons or 20 liters and you have my money. The V-MAX could be a good tourer; read of owners touring on it but the fuel range is catastrophic.

I wish motorcycle writers would stop with the myth about the VMAX being incapable in the turns. They need to improve their riding skills; because there are highly skilled amateur riders on RUclips, keeping pace with full on sport bikes on winding roads. It takes more skill and effort with the VMAX; but it can be done. The VMAX is not just for straight roads; or beginners.
