All George wanted to do was get away. Everything ‘Mary’ was the opposite of that. That was the emotion in her house. Keep in mind that earlier he found out that Harry wasn’t coming back to take over the business too.

That line and "Attaboy Clarence!" from George always make me cry tears of absolute joy
I love that Harry, who is a national hero for his war service, considers his big brother George to be HIS hero, and for all the right reasons.
That's the line that does it for me every time too.
And Jimmy Stewart's reaction to that line is perfect!
Fun fact, this movie became such a big classic because it became public domain in 1974 (movies published before 1964 had a copyright term of 28 years and then they had to apply for a new one, but they never applied for it in this case). Lots of TV stations started to show it around the world because they didn't have to pay royalties! I've seen it a bunch of times ever since I was a kid, and I live in Finland. 😁
That's also why there's the running gag in the first two Home Alone movies... In the first movie they are all in France waiting to find out about if they can get back to Kevin and everyone is sitting around the TV watching It's a Wonderful Life dubbed in French. Then in Home Alone 2 they are all in Florida waiting to find out about Kevin and sitting around the TV watching It's a Wonderful Life dubbed in Spanish.
That is partially right…they later were able to reestablish the copyright because they also owned the source material and the music rights.
And most importantly, because it was a terrific movie.....
No matter how many times I see the ending of this movie I tear up. One of the best endings to any movie ever.
In my opinion, the final scene in this movie may be the single greatest scene ever filmed.

Yeah, I’ve always hated the colorized version. It wasn’t meant to shown in color in the first place, the black and white was a deliberate choice from the director. The colorized version just takes away so much the visual charm.

That midscene with George and Mary, the one where George is grumpy and ends with them kissing, happens four years after their nighttime stroll under the stars. It doesn't sound like Mary's been in town much, mostly away at college. So, it makes sense that George would be conflicted and in a bad mood. His brother just showed up and turns out he won't be able to take over for George. I mean, I completely understand George's erratic behavior. It doesn't have to do with Mary. It has to do with his lifelong dreams and aspirations slipping away.
I think he was definitely dealing with some feelings towards Mary that didn't help with the rest of the mess on his brain and spirits. He didn't know quite what to do with them and frankly, didn't WANT to deal with them there and then because of everything else. But they inevitably won over. ❤
I think it's both - in that as you said, his brother's return and finding out he has a SIL and also that his brother has an opportunity that George knows damn well would mean a bright future for Harry, but also means that once again he's going to have to give up his own future for someone else's - he adores his brother and he's going to do it, but he's also human, so of course it hurts. He shows up at Mary's in the middle of still processing the pain of swallowing his own dreams in large, jagged chunks. And then Mary re-enters the picture and his mom pushes him at her, and Mary - well, this is the 40s. They're at the age they should be marrying and having children. And so at this point all he can see when he looks at Mary is another weight waiting to be tied round his neck to hold him down in Bedford Falls. She loves the old house, that's a tie to BF. He's baffled she came back when she'd gotten out - something he's never done and can only be jealous about as every single friend of his has left. And her response - that she was *homesick* for a place he sees as a prison - yeah, Mary's just another piece of the picture of his future that he sees clearly and *hates*.
I have some feelings about this movie. Had he succeeded, it's possible he could have helped far more people than he did in BF and been a happier man. And meanwhile BF's citizens all benefit off his losses. To pin the success or failure of another person, let alone *an entire town*, on one person is a really terrible burden. Having said that, it is only a movie, and the acting is top notch. I just think it's interesting, some of the unhealthy mindsets our media can paint up to look beautiful when, had the writers not written him out of his troubles, he really would have gone to jail and his family would have suffered terribly, the B&L would have failed after all his work, and he'd be left with a ruined life, because he gave and he gave and he gave, and never said "no, I'm sorry, but I cannot keep being the only thing between everyone and utter disaster."
Yes. but I think he's made at her, too. Everyone else got out, including her, and got to go to college and see the world. He was anchored by duty and everyone else left him behind. that makes a person resentful even if they try not to be. so I think that's what he was feeling there. he was feeling almost betrayed by her, just like the other girl.
@@bettrhalf8006 Don’t forget that it was George who convinced Sam to build the plastics factory in Bedford Falls. That must have been a huge benefit to such a small town, especially since it was in the height of the Depression in 1932 and would have later done terrific business during the war and after. I really think that the factory and George’s Bailey Park providing affordable housing saved BF from either becoming a ghost town or a seedy dive like Pottersville.

I love how they transition from the angels watching George’s life to the current events. They kind of make you forget about the angels until Clarance says who he is and you go “oh yeah!” 😆❤️ It draws you into George’s struggles to the point you forget someone’s coming to help him.
Although throughout the film, they are narrating. They just take some long breaks inbetween.
@@fynnthefox9078 Yeah, and in addition to that they never do show/mention Clarance heading down to Earth to help George. It’s a clever move to build the tension the more discouraged George becomes.
This is one of those movies that I’ve seen so many times, and every time I find something new to love. Funny story, when George’s uncle falls into the garbage cans drunk, it was actually a PA off camera knocking down some equipment, and the actors cries of “I’m alright! I’m alright!”, were improvised!
There's a story about W.C. Fields in his vaudeville days. He was doing his act on stage, and backstage someone collided with some equipment, creating much crashing noise. When it subsided, Fields looked at the audience and confidentially told them, "Mice."
Frank Capra liked the sound effect, he paid the PA $10 ($152.67 today’s money)
I like that story. Here's another one: Lionel Barrymore, who played Potter, didn't believe Donna Reed (Mary)'s claim about being born on a farm in Iowa, so one day they had a live cow backstage. Barrymore bet Reed $50 that she couldn't milk it.. Reed won the bet and said it was the easiest $50 she ever made. There's another story about Donna Reed: When filming the scene where Mary
throws a rock through the window of the Granville House, director Frank Capra hired a sharpshooter to shoot the window out, but Donna Reed broke the window herself on the first throw. They later found out she played baseball in high school and had a strong pitching arm.

It's so weird how I've never seen this movie in color before but it feels like I have. This movie never fails to make me cry. A classic and a fave

@@surjitbadhan68 There was a colorized VHS version that I owned that was horrendous but it was in the dollar bin and that's what I had playing every year I brought down the Christmas decorations and put up our tree. I then purchased the double DVD set with both the colorized and original black and white version. I found my preference was the colorized version with the television set to Vivid as the colors and the excellent quality of the movie transfer made it seem like the movie was recently shot. It's almost blasphemous to like colorized versions of b&w movies but I watch Miracle on 34th Street the same way. It simply makes the movie more cheery to me. In both instances, the colorization is excellent.

Okay, so, my grandfather passed away a few days ago and this was one of the movies we always watched around Christmas.

Now the version you watched was the colorized version from the 80's which studios in that time was doing a lot of taking older black and white films and adding color much to director's anger including Frank Capra who directed this film,
The scene where both Stewart and Reed listened to the telephone call together was done in one take,
Mr. Potter is regarded as one of the greatest villains ever and Lionel Barrymore was Drew Barrymore's great uncle,
There was an alternate ending that wasn’t filmed where Mr. Potter died of a heart attack,
When Uncle Billy yells "I'm alright" he improvised that as he accidentally ran into a cart of film equipment and the sound was like running into trash cans so it was left in,
When Jimmy is in the bar praying and crying those were real tears as he was thinking of all of the military men he served with during world war 2. See Jimmy Stewart took a break from acting when the U.S. became involved with the war and he was a fighter pilot in what wluld later become the Air Force and this was the first film he did after returning home,
The reason Uncle Billy has strings tied around his fingers is that was a trick used back then to help remember things,
The film wasn't a big hit when it first came out as it was released in the summer, but thanks to repeat airings on television over many years it developed it's audience,
The film received a special oscar for it's snow effects,

I recall that Colorization "hit the fan" when Frank Sinatra was rendered with BROWN eyes! The Brouhaha from "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra turned the tide against Ted Turner's Color Crayon crusade.;)

Love seeing you react to older movies! Fun fact: the actor who played Mr. Potter was Lionel Barrymore, great-uncle of actress Drew Barrymore! Her grandfather, John Barrymore, and his siblings Ethel and Lionel, were huge stars of film, stage and radio back in the day.

I have watched this movie at Christmas every year of my life and I'm 60 years old! It's my most favorite movie ever, not just Christmas movie. I'm very surprised you haven't heard of it, but you have now! And you'll never forget it.
Yes, he definitely needs to watch this every year, just like the rest of us.
I didn't give this movie a chance as a kid because it was old and in black and white, but as an adult I watched it and since the first time, every year at Christmas time since. It never fails to make me tear up at the end when all his friends show up to help him and I knew you'd love that part, too. Remember, no man is a failure who has friends!
Miracle on 34th Street (1947) would be a good reaction watch choice at some point. I feel like there's this ongoing seasonal debate about which is better Miracle vs. Wonderful Life, but I think they're different enough to where comparing them is kinda pointless. It's a Wonderful Life is this really powerful emotional story about how all life has value no matter who they are, whereas Miracle is a very wholesome and sweet story about faith, optimism, and belief but isn't as heavy (which is probably why I as a kid preferred it).
My mom bought them both from a Walmart as a package set years ago and so I think of one I think of the other. I didn't actually watch either until after I saw a Friends episode talking about It's a Wonderful Life being depressing lol

Be sure it's the 1947 Miracle on 34th Street with Edmund Gwenn, Natalie Wood and Maureen O'Hara! There was a made-for-TV movie re-make in 1973 and a re-make in 1994. You'll want to watch the original.
Full credit to the legendary Lionel Barrymore as old Mister Potter. It's one of his most-memorable roles.
Fun fact: 21:19 was not scripted. There was an accident off stage and then the actor who played Uncle Billy improvised "I'm all right, I'm all right" to make it seem like his character did it. Also very glad you watched this movie!
It's a tradition to watch this film every year and sob uncontrollably. I actually just saw the film tonight at a local theater with my wife. It's still a magical experience to watch, and an absolute masterpiece.
The colorization is not too bad with this one. But I'm a purist and watch the B&W version.
I prefer the Monochrome original as well, where possible. (I wonder if "They Shall Not Grow Old" can be found in "shades of grey"?)
Happily, the Constitution of the United States gives every American the right to choose between black and white and colorization.

Not only does the amazing ending take place at Christmas time, but it embraces the very essence of Christmas which is that giving is its own reward... in 1,000 different ways you may not fully comprehend at the time. This is a Christmas movie if there ever was one!
This is THE classic Christmas movie. I loved it as a kid and somehow ended up like George anyway but without the friends and family. 😭 They used to play this every year on NBC Thanksgiving night to start the Christmas season. I don't know if they still do.
For the record, among film buffs (film snobs), it's unseemly to watch colorized versions of movie. It looks dumb but also it's not the way the filmmakers intended.

Wonderful reaction, Nick, to a movie that never gets old no matter how many times it's seen. Just as a general rule, any time a film has a black-and-white and color version, the black and white is the original version. This started back in the nineties when it was felt they would sell more movies on VHS, later DVD by adding computerized color. Problem was, they looked washed out and unnatural. But no matter, you enjoyed the film and that is the important thing.
This movie emotionally screwed Nick up so much he called it a Christmas Story instead of It’s a Wonderful Life and truthfully I don’t blame him! This is my first time seeing this movie only cause of Nick’s reaction video, and I was already fighting hard against every atom in my body to not cry when Mr. Gower was purposely hitting George on his bad ear. Good on that young actor cause the way he said “Don’t hurt my sore ear again Mr.Gower! Don’t hurt my sore ear again please! I won’t tell anyone!” with that cracked voice when Mr. Gower tried hugging him after realizing what he did and how George helped him by saving both his life and the young boy the “medicine” was meant for just broke me! What a cute and amazing kid 🥺 Not mention the wholesomeness of the ending!

UPDATE: I did some more research on this movie cause I know it’s a Christmas classics and I’m fascinated I’ve gone so long without watching it. I am even more impressed with that young boy who played a young George Bailey! His name was Robert J. Anderson and apparently that’s real blood because he actually was getting slapped so hard! H.B. Warner was a method actor and he actually got drunk and was hitting Anderson, and each time they had to re-film the scene, Warner got more intense. Anderson mentioned it to the LA Times in 1996- here’s his direct quote:
“He actually bloodied my ear. My ear was beat up, and my face was red and I was in tears... I didn’t know what we were building for. H.B. was perfect. He reached the crescendo. At the end, when it was all over, he was very lovable. He grabbed me and hugged me, and he meant it.”
What a different time. I don’t think I can blame Warner but I can’t imagine hitting a child like that especially when he looks and sounds so precious like that. More respect to Anderson and R.I.P since I know he passed ♥️
This is one of the best Christmas movies ever made!
They show this movie all the time on TNT, TBS, NBC, ABC, CBS, and The Hallmark Channel every Christmas.
I remember watching this movie when I was in the 5th or 6th Grade
Well back in the 80’s it would have been shown a lot because of public domain status, but when it went back to being copyrighted it is only shown once a year on NBC.
The first time I watched this is when I was overseas while still in the fourth grade. I’ve loved it ever since.
@@jamesmoyner7499 It's more accurate to say it's shown only a few times every year during the Christmas season, on NBC and one or more of its affiliates. This year, for instance (2022), it was shown twice on the USA cable channel on December 15 in addition to being broadcast on NBC, I think again twice, once close to Thanksgiving, and once upcoming on Christmas Eve.

Ah "It's A Wonderful Life" one of the most iconic Christmas movies of all time! and to think next month will be the 75th anniversary of when this movie was released!

The ending to this movie never fails to make me cry every time
This is the only movie that makes me cry tears of joy every time. The 1940’s are a long lost golden age of Christmas movies.

Hey Nick, a few thoughts for you:
The “run” on the bank that George witnesses was part of the crash of 1929 that began the Great Depression. A run is essentially when people start to panic and withdraw all of their money at once. This is the reason that today the FDIC insures every account for $2500. This movie was made in 1946 so just after WWII ended; memories of the war and the Great Depression would have been very recent for audiences. Jimmy Stewart himself was a veteran of WWII and was dealing with PTSD as he performed this role, it in some ways enhances his performance here.
Many people watch this every year at Christmas (I’m one of them) but I’ll agree that this can be watched at any time. It’s meaning really changes over time for people - I think its important that George (even after his friends help him) still is living in the old house and still will keep working at a job he doesn’t love. I think this goes to show that sometimes life gives us new dreams to inhabit that are better than what we could invent for ourselves :)
The run on the bank isn't part of the Stock Market Crash of 1929, and here's why. Mary's and Harry's high school graduating class was the class of 1928. A banner at the dance states this quite clearly. After George is appointed as the executive of the Building & Loan, he sends Harry to college. When Harry returns from college it is four years later, and George visits Mary and falls in love with her on that same night, which means that their wedding takes place no earlier than 1932. So the run on the bank followed by the bank being closed for a week is almost certainly intended to represent the national Banking Crisis of March, 1933, which, as you suggest, resulted in the creation of the FDIC. As of 2010, with the passage of the Dodd-Frank law, the FDIC insures bank deposits up to $250,000, and no depositer has ever lost a penny that was insured by the FDIC.
I would say there wedding was in March 1933 about 8 months after both Mary’s & Harry’s return from college with degree’s.
I remember seeing this for the first time. Years later, My old favorite Childhood videotape series, “VeggieTales” did a parody of this movie called “It’s a Meaningful Life.”. I still love watching this movie though.
It was like a mixture of this and Polar Express too. Very well done.
I also grew up with iCarly which also did a parody of this movie.
I just got around to reading the book a few weeks ago. It was good but not near as fleshed out as the movie.

To me, it has the happiest ending of ANY movie, Christmas or otherwise and at the same time a major tear jerker.
George's policeman and cabbie friends are Bert and Ernie. This was almost certainly a coincidence (with the Sesame Street muppets), but has become part of the folklore.
I thought I read that the Sesame Street characters were named after Bert and Ernie from this movie.

Answering some of your questions:
(a) National child-labor laws were not enacted in the United States until 1939. George's after-school job, in 1919, obviously predates that.
(b) George was grumpy when he first visited Mary's house because he had realized/decided that the honorable thing to do would be to encourage Harry to go to Buffalo and work for Ruth's father, meaning that he (George) would be stuck in Bedford Falls forever -- Mary was, at that moment, a symbol of his entrapment, and the fact that he'd never be able to pursue his dreams.
(c) Before National Deposit Insurance was enacted in the mid-1930s, a bank could be ruined by its customers' sudden lack of faith in it: they would all suddenly withdraw all of their cash (this was called a "run" on the bank), the bank would be left without assets, and it would collapse -- and all its other depositors would be ruined as well. During the first years of the Great Depression, this happened with horrifying frequency.
(d) The ratio of money values from that era to this is roughly 20:1. So: Ernie Bishop's $5,000 home loan was worth about $100,000 in our money; George's $45 per week was worth roughly $900/week ($45,000/year) in our money; the $20,000/year job Potter offered him would have been about $400,000 in our money; the $8,000 Potter stole from Uncle Billy would have been about $160,000 in our money.
(e) In the alternative universe where George was never born, Violet is a prostitute, and is being jailed for that.

Jimmy Stewart had just put 4 yrs in WW2 flying bombing missions. It aged him 20 yrs. 1946. A great actor. The director was from eastern Europe. An immigrant who Loved America. All his Movies were Spiritual
There is a SNL skit that tells what could have happened to Old Man Potter. I always find it funny that the Potter actor from this movie looks like Former VP Dick Cheney.
Ugh the end of this movie just fills you up with ALL the good feelings. 💖 It’s hard not to let it leak out!

This movie drags me up from depression, I think about... Ending, but this movie is a good movie.
Last Christmas was a tough time for me. And at my worst moment I hugged my nephew the way Geirge does his son. Its so real and raw.

BTW, the domesticated crow that follows Uncle Billy around the office is a trained crow that was used in some famous films. For example, remember in The Wizard of Oz in the scene where Scarecrow first meets Dorothy and he's all upset because he doesn't actually scare away crows? The crow that comes and lands on him is the same crow!

My favorite Christmas movie.
He was being funny with Mary because he just found out his dreams are going to be dashed again with his brother's marriage and new job. The scene right before being with Mary explains it with him looking at all the brochures of all the places he will never get to see.
I played Mr. Gower in our High School play way back when. Our Director (English teacher), gave each of the cast & crew a copy of Tom Sawyer with Clarence's message to George handwritten in each one. Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm so used to watching this in black and white I got confused when it started in color lol. A wonderful movie and a true Christmas classic!!
Greatest Christmas film ever! This was Jimmy Stewart's first film after serving in WWII and the making of it was very therapeutic for him.
In the mid-80s SNL did an "alternate ending" skit for this. After everybody shows up at George's house, Uncle Billy remembers what happened to the money, so they all go to confront Potter. It's on here if you want to check it out.
Movies made back in the 40's and 50's may seem slower to people now, but people lived at a slower pace and rhythm as well. Also, it may be confusing to note many of the societal expectations of the times...yes, kids got jobs as soon as they could to help support their families, (my Dad got his first job at age 5, and was selling newspapers at age 8 because he didn't have shoes to go to school, until a stranger bought him a pair. He never forgot that man, nor the importance of an education). Yes, there were certain standards of behavior expected of people. And yes, people respected God and it was evident in the culture, through movies, music, schools, well, everywhere. And that helped to make people more aware that they needed to be kinder, helpful, respectful.
You couldn’t understand why George was upset and irritated the night he and Mary finally got together. It’s because his brother Harry was supposed to come back to Bedford Falls and run the building and loan and it would be his turn to go to college and maybe do some traveling. Instead Harry has gotten married and has been promised a job in Buffalo by his new father-in-law. So George is stuck once again and he’s depressed and feeling dejected. I’ve seen this movie so many times I could tell it verbatim scene for scene.
such a classic also I didn’t know it went to color. I thought we were just watching the black-and-white one but overall best Christmas movie.

Another mildly fantasy James Stewart movie you might enjoy is 'Harvey'. Some local TV stations have often chosen to broadcast it around Easter, for no other reason than that it involves a rabbit. TV station managers are weird.

This is a very incredible Christmas movie.
Your reactions were so heartwarming. Playing this while I work, really made me extra happy. It's delightful to see a young guy like you, so affected by IAWL. Only this year I learned that this classic movie bombed so badly when released, that the studio just let it become public domain. Because TV stations could show it without a fee, it became readily available to the public and that's why it reached classic status. It even seems like a bit of a Christmas miracle to have people who might need to see it, be able to view for many, many years without paying.
I've only seen this movie in black and white. And Christmas time, There is a few movies I watch EVERY year. This is one of them (black and white version) White Christmas and How The Grinch Stole Christmas and A Christmas Carol are 3 others.

t's a Wonderful Life is more than a Christmas movie I am not christen and I love it. It is a feel good movie and one of the first time travel element movies. It is so much about time travel or alternative realities that Back to the future allude to it :). Fun fact the movie was not a financial success when it came out and was forgotten. Only because of a copyright registration error ( Which was fixed decades later) the movie was considered public domain for years and because of the that the Tv Networks aired over and over every Christmas till it became a cult classic. Another fun fact the scene with the uncle that was drunk and fell down was adlib because one of the stage worker dropped something in the middle of filming. I love George speech to Mr Potter about the working class. The actor who plays Mr Potter is by the way Drew Barrymore great uncle. If you want another great Jimmy Stewart movie you should watch Mr Smith goes to Washington.

Maybe, but it gained a cult following like many good movies.
So that part where George comes to talk to Mary, and he's really rude to her, Sam Wainwright calls, and the scene ends with Mary and George kissing...
First off, people misunderstand how many times these guys hung out. It's a small town, I'm sure they saw each other on and off whenever Mary was in town from college.
They didn't just see each other twice. That could of been clearer, but you can tell when George's mom says "Nice girl, Mary, she can help you find the answers", or something like that. That's a big clue George and Mary may not of been "dating", but they hung out at the same houses and parties, etc. with each other's families and other people's families. People were way more into parties and getting together in person back then.
Also, it would be a little nuts if they had only run into each other twice and had such strong feelings after years.
Mary's mom was being rude to George because George wasn't going to be a rich man like Sam Wainwright. She saw Sam as a much better choice for Mary.
George was being rude to Mary because he had woken up that day thinking his brother Harry was coming back so George could finally travel the way he'd always dreamed of.
When his brother brought back a wife who could give Harry a better job somewhere else, George had to swallow his pride once again, that day, and then be told to go date the home-town girl he really cared about, but who was not really a part of his dreams. He felt really conflicted and upset that his dream of travel was going to fade away, even though he loved Mary.
Great movie. But some things haven't aged as well. I honestly find it hilarious when he finds out what would've happened to his wife. She's... an old maid! She never married and is now a librarian! Oh no! XD Honestly that sounds like the dream for me, I don't care about getting married and at one pointed wanted to be a librarian.

Glad you discovered, and reacted to, this iconic holiday classic. For myself, over the last 6 decades, this film has been a cherished and regular part of my holiday viewing. It is a wonderful reminder of what is truly important in life.
As noted, the "color" version is the movie, but colorized. I feel that colorization, in general, was a failure, and did a disservice to the technology itself and the movie it was colorizing: black and white has its own way of handling light and shadow, and it doesn't really translate well to color, which can make things harsh. I would recommend doing a re-watch at some point in black and white.
I'm so glad you have finally watched "It's a Wonderful Life" for Christmas! This is a classic that MUST be watched every year for Christmas in our house. The reason why you've seen other stories, in movies and TV series that have used the trope of "wishing they'd never been born", etc. was because all those other series/stories were copying or paying homage to this movie. If you watch this movie again & again every year for Christmas, more & more details will begin coming out to you, and making more sense. Don't feel bad for crying through the end of your review, it is impossible for anyone with a heart and an empathetic spirit to watch this film, especially the last half hour of it, and not cry. Merry Christmas!

You are watching the movie in Technicolor. The movie is originally in Black and White. That is how I prefer to watch it to keep the feel of authenticity. Especially the old horror movies that were in black and white. It feels better to watch them that way than in technicolor. There aren’t as scary in Technicolor.
The silent generation did a great job making a film so long ago that it can still stand the test of time. I hope this inspires our young filmmakers to take note!!!!

Fun fact: The crash sound you heard when Uncle Billy was walking home was REAL! The actor actually bumped into shelves of movie reel canisters, but they kept it in because it sounded like the character bumping into garbage cans left outside for the garbage men the next morning
It was actually a member of the crew tripping over a table. The poor man thought he would be fired, instead he got a $10 bonus for “improving the audio.”
