    "A Song of Ice and Fire (commonly abbreviated as ASoIaF) is an ongoing series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other."
    "Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has a large ensemble cast and follows several story arcs throughout the course of the show. The first major arc concerns the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a web of political conflicts among the noble families either vying to claim the throne or fighting for independence from whoever sits on it. A second focuses on the last descendant of the realm's deposed ruling dynasty, who has been exiled to Essos and is plotting to return and reclaim the throne. The third follows the Night's Watch, a military order defending the realm against threats from beyond Westeros's northern border."

    It still pisses me off that they wrote Ellaria Sand's character as a direct opposite of everything she is in the books, most of all because we were robbed of seeing Indira Varma perform her beautiful speech about the futility of vengeance, how it won't bring back Oberyn, how the Mountain's skull won't hold her at night... It's some of George's best writing that most fully embodies his themes, and just like the "Broken Man" speech, it got tossed aside. Go figure.

    To me, the Sand Snakes in the show were the first sign of trouble, they were so campy and dumb especially when compared with the books. Season 5 and onward they made every book character into a shell of themselves, some just took longer than others to transform into dumbness. First it was the Sand Snakes, then it was Tyrion, then the Ironborn and Euron, then Sansa/Littlefinger, then Arya, and then Jon, and then Varys, and finally Danerys.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy Месяц назад +2

      Depends on the kind of trouble. In some senses, they were the point where a problem that had already been there since season 1 became impossible to ignore: the creators don't get the feminist themes of the books.
      One of the themes of the book (given the number and variety of female characters, and how characters like Cersei have been unmistakably shaped by their gender and how Westerosi society treats women) is the different ways women can navigate a deeply misogynistic culture, and the books come up with a lot of different answers. There are women like Obara, Brienne and Arya who react by picking up weapons and fighting their way through (and the books don't shy away from Arya's position of weakness compared to her enemies, or how much shit Brienne is given for being a woman who wants to do man things,) but the books don't dismiss the soft power that crafty noble ladies can wield as "lesser" than the hard power of your Obaras and Briennes, and most of the female characters don't resent other women for liking girly things (Cersei does, but that's a sign of her narcissism - she only cares about sexism when it prevents her from doing what she wants, and she seems to hate every other woman in Westeros, often for very sexist reasons.) Layered, complex, strong female characters come in a wide variety in the books - there are many different ways to be strong.
      But the show flattens this all out: to the showrunners, a strong female character is someone like Brienne or Arya, and any female character who is not like them gets the shaft. Catelyn is made less important and Robb is elevated at her expense, Arya and Brienne are Not Like Other Girls and hate women who do girly things now, Talisa Maegyr is working as a battlefield nurse because "she doesn't want to sit around planning balls" when (as many history buffs angrily pointed out) balls and dinner parties have traditionally been _very_ important for diplomacy and politics, and she could have done a lot more good by staying in Volantis and using this sort of soft power to try and influence Volantine society away from slavery...and this all happens before the Sand Snakes show up.
      The Sand Snakes are when this becomes impossible to overlook. In the books, they're individuals who take after their father in different ways. In the show, they're all warriors, they're basically interchangeable, they're trying way too hard to be badass in a way that shows how limited D&D's vision for what makes a cool female character is, and they're shit.

    • @shawnhenderson2091
      @shawnhenderson2091 Месяц назад +2

      @@TalisguyYeah, I feel like D&D completely missed the point of GRRM's writing, the complexity yet over all believability of each character's interaction with one another and the setting and how it shaped the plot. To them, they took the success of the first four seasons as proof that people just want blood, guts and sex with an occasional dragon blowing shit up or a zombie wight walking by. It turned into LCD campy nonsense, with no grace or consideration for what makes a woman strong. By the final season, all the lead characters became the same, man or woman, the same exact scowl and intonation. They were all plot driven characters, the complete opposite of the books, in which characters drove the plot, each of whom were unique and organic.

    • @Levacque
      @Levacque 25 дней назад +2

      @@TalisguyI have spoken about this exact problem in the show, the flattening of themes. In particular, I lost my stomach for the show during season 5 when it became obvious that they were very heavy-handedly setting up the rise of women leaders by having their "Violence Against Women Inc." season. It was incredibly disheartening because of how ingrained feminist themes are in ASOIAF. I stopped watching until a couple years after the series had concluded and I could watch with full emotional detachment. It was literally sickening to me that they spent the entirety of season 5 dumping on women in increasingly creepy ways, culminating with the child brothel in Braavos and Sansa's wedding night. Both of those scenes are the exact type of thing that GRRM has the tact NOT to write, because depicting some types of violence is simply not going to serve anything except the fetishization of violence itself.
      And that's my main criticism of GoT once the source material ran dry and Dan+Dave were creative leads - they clearly fetishize violence, not understanding that the series is intended to condemn it. It became the focus of the show instead of the accent that flavours the rest of the dish. We can forget about thematic development entirely.

    • @Talisguy
      @Talisguy 16 дней назад

      @@Levacque Yeah, season 5 is also where I stopped watching. And I just realised something when reading this comment - it's probably not a coincidence that pretty much the only female character in the show whose writing shows an understanding of soft power is Margaery, who's now a Sexy Manipulative Seductress.
      Now, I love the show's version of Margaery. She's a great character, and presenting someone like her - someone ambitious, seductive and manipulative - as solidly less evil than the people she's trying to manipulate and usurp (Joffrey and Cersei) is a cool move. ...But it's probably not a coincidence that pretty much the only character who's allowed to be cool and interesting because she wields soft power very well, without needing to back it up with physical force or being sidelined, is one who lines up with a well worn trope: the Femme Fatale.
      They only Get It if it's well-established territory, like a power-hungry woman using her sexy female sexy manipulation to sexily manipulate men. With sex. But the (supposed) hero's grieving widow being the voice of reason and the political expert for her son's army? Making a lot of the best decisions for that side herself, and often being ignored because she's a woman? Being a fairytale Wicked Stepmother to one of the heroes, but still treated as a rounded and mostly sympathetic character despite her harsh treatment of another sympathetic character for something that wasn't his fault? That's a bit too different. Better focus on her son instead and reduce her role to a Concerned Mother.

    Haven managed to pronounce "Myrcella" differently every time he said it over the course of 13min 🙃
    I love book-Ellaria, one of the absolute best minor characters, an absolute distillation of one of GRRM's core themes of the series.
    "I saw your father die. Here is his killer. Can I take a skull to bed with me, to give me comfort in the night? Will it make me laugh, write me songs, care for me when I am old and sick?".
    It's all right there in the text, and yet the majority of the audience (book and show) still seems to take the view that ASOIAF is about "winning the game of thrones".

    The Dorne plotline was the first major indication that GoT was going off the rails. The Sand Snakes definitely being the worst of this ham fisted, ill conceived attempt to shoehorn Dorne into the story for the purpose of getting that faction into the endgame. Putting Bronn into the middle of it was also a huge red flag as it indicated a willingness to pander to the audience. I remember giving the show the benefit of the doubt thinking that surely D&D would learn from this error and course correct in time to land the plane in a satisfactory manner. Little did I know that it marked the beginning of the end. ASoIaF was one of my favorite things in the world and it's been ruined forever. Not really, they had made choice decisions before the Sand Snakes arrived. One I can think of involves Tyrion right after he loses his trial by combat...SPOILER AHEAD
      If you can recall, Tyrion had a wife named Tysha who was a peasent girl he rescued and married. Tywin found out and Jamie told Tyrion that she was a whore he hired for Tyrion. Tywon decided to annul the marriage and give Tysha to the garrison to "use" while Tyrion watched and then made him do the same. Tywin paid her silver for each guy and a gold for Tyrion and threw her out, never to be seen again. When Jamie frees Tyrion from jail, (for context Jamie returned to KL after Joff had died and Tyrion was arrested) and confesses that Tysha was NEVER a whore and that Tywin had forced him to say that. Tysha was a real peasent girl who truly loved Tyrion. Tyrion is enraged, hits Jamie, tells him Cersei has been sleeping with anybody and everybody and lies that he killed Joff and promises revenge for his family and everybody. And this is why Tyrion goes up to confront his father, finding Shae there (in the books it wasn't as romantic and she humiliated him at the trial) kills her and confronts his father about Tysha. And when Tywin repeatedly insults Tysha, calling her a whore and how she didn't matter, then Tyrion kills him. Which from this point on, Tyrion is fully on his villan arc. He hates everything and wants his family and Westeros to pretty much burn. Which is drastically different from the show. It wasn't even just Tyrion it affected but Jamie too. After this Jamie starts hating Cersei and not love her anymore, to the point that when he's at Riverrun and she writes a letter begging him for help after the Faith arrest her, he burns it. He is pretty much done with her.

    I'll drop my prediction for what happens to Sand Snakes in "Winds":
    Obara teams up with Darkstar and they kill Areo and Balon (since Areo is one of the more likely POVs that will be killed off). They both join fAegon afterwards;
    Tyene poisons Tommen and Myrcella (since latter is coming to King's Landing from what I remember), possibly after seeing that Mountain is still alive. She probably survives thanks to connections with High Sparrow;
    Nymeria I think is the one that will most likely die, either she's poisoned by Varys or is killed by Mountain;
    Sarella and Sam will eventually discover faceless man in the Citadel and probably uncover some other secrets (such as Jon's true heritage or maybe something about Others). They also both survive Euron's attack because of course they do.

    I’m currently reading the books. (I’m 12 chapters into A Storm of Swords) and I’m really liking it so far, but I do know a certain wedding is coming. I also enjoy reading ASOIAF fan-fiction. The two I’m reading now are The Dragon Cub and A Song of Three Sons.
    The first one is an R+L=J centered theory that starts just after the Greyjoy rebellion with one change: Tywin dies and Jamie feels freed from his father and is also set free by King Robert to become the Lord of Casterly Rock. He rides north for a feast in Winterfell and notices a young Jon Snow and sees him with a sword and thinks well of him and also sees how similar he looks to Rhaegar and puts two and two together and Ned and offers to squire the boy and prepare him to be king. At times things seem to go a little too good for Jon and the Lannisters but it’s a decent story.
    A warning though: If you like Catelyn and Edmure then you might not like how they are portrayed in the story.
    The second fanfic starts closer to the original start date each chapter follows a different POV. The three main POV characters are three original characters made by the writer. Tristan Stark Robb’s Twin, Loren Lannister another son of Tywin, and Lyonel Baratheon son of Stannis and sister to Shireen.
    Great video. Peace ✌🏻

It's a shame, because the ck2 AGOT team was brilliant. I just don't have the same confidence in the CK3 AGOT team, partly because of how vastly different CK3's base game is compared to CK2's base game. CK3 is a lot more The Sims than a strategy game and the focus seems to be on graphics and events vs scripts, modifiers, and mechanics that augment or influence strategy.

    Check this out-in text, Obara Sands is almost 30 years old. Cersei's age. Oberyn was NOT young when he went to Casterly Rock-he is OLDer. Right before they get to Casterly Rock, he is in Oldtown with Elia. THAT is when he 'makes' Obara Sands...or when he went and got her from her mother and had her choose between spears or tears. I never finished the show-but I would bet she dies on water, NOT Sand, because in text certain Dornish should NEVER try to sail. If she leaves land/sand, Obara will die. She is a Sand that was born in Oldtown-she shouldn't be a Sand. It is a clever kind of code in text. A sand snake cannot be buried-but it can drown. In text-they should be able to survive any underground 'dungeon' but they stand no chance on water.

    One of the greatest bait and switch moments in the books is how the entire Dornish plot leaves you wondering, why is Doran so useless? Sure Arianne and the Snakes are brash and inexperienced, but clearly Doran is not. How can he not care about revenge? How can he just sit in the water gardens? How can he detest his ancestral seat of Sunspear so much that he only grudgingly goes? Why won’t he at least listen to his daughter and nieces and try to do SOMETHING?! Only to find out at the end that he has been planning a Targaryen restoration the entire time. Dude was playing 4D chess while everyone around him was digging in the sand. Doesn’t seem to be going too well (poor Quentin) but all that to say that it’s so sad that in the show, he is actually just a useless wimp which by default makes the awful Snad Sneks technically correct. So stupid.
    Also, Alexander Siddiq is a great actor and did a good job with what little he was given, his portrayal was an excellent counterpoint to Pedro’s Oberyn.
    What a waste.
