- In this video, we show how you can make WOOTZ steel from old drills and bearing balls . And later we MAKING TANTO knife YIN YANG. We decided to make a tanto (kaiken) knife in the yin yang style. The handle and scabbard are made of black and white micarta, which underlines the author's idea. The blade is welded from author's crucible steel.
If you liked the process of making a knife, do not forget to like it. Thanks everyone for watching.

Thanks for not adding music, I just wanted to hear the natural sounds of smithing
I especially enjoy, that you are melting steel before forging and mix down a different sorts of steel, that can make absolutely infinite count of variations, thank you.
Thanks 👍☺️
Watched this whole video without clicking on it until the end..man that was relaxing
👍
Gorgeous work. Not a tanto, but still gorgeous.
"Americanized" prettied up junk.
@@Ethercloud Americanized? The guy is Russian. There isn't anything American anywhere.
Ukraine 🖐️
@@fz-makingknives3663 Ukraine! Sorry! I saw the .ru and assumed incorrectly.
@@fz-makingknives3663 it is not a compliment, the blade is missing the tanto signature design, the blade was also not folded metal, and the blade wasn't differentially treated (soft iron back, firm tempered steel blade). Not to mention your honing could use some work, there are many grades of whet stone. Functionally yes it is a knife in a pretty package, but not a tanto, nor an example of a traditional japanese production.
Another masterpiece from the bladesmiths of the most badass blacksmith shop. Dude that anvil setup is freakin awesome. You really have a great setup.
Thank you 😊
Did not realise I wanted blacksmithing channel shot in this style so badly.
You should narrate your steps in the captions like Primitive Technology does!
👍
Genius . Beautiful knife . I don't care what anyone says about tradition. Stuff like this will become tradition : )
👍
The art is in the metal, not the sandpaper. No doubt any old world master would have paid greatly to have access to a modern belt sander.
Blown away at your skill level, your finished product, got some ideas from your techniques in the shop and laughed at the idiots criticizing you when 99% of them haven't made either blade #1 or their blade resembles that butter knife reluctantly retrieved from the garbage disposal. Great Job
Thank you ☺️
i only criticize the labeling of this process as DAMASCUS! when he is forge welding an older process which never gets to a liquid state. weather or not ive smithed anything or not is irrelevant
nor have i questioned his skill only the incorrect title
I am a mechanical engineer with a background in metallurgy and have been blade smithing for 32 years now. This guy doesn't even know what wootz is. Yes he is an amazing blade smith but wootz is NOT pattern welded steel. Here is a link to some actual scientifically accurate info. ruclips.net/video/OP8PCkcBZU4/видео.html
It's really cool how it just melts into a perfect little slug
👍👌
What are you adding to the crucible at the very beginning? There's three things that you dumped in at the very beginning besides the drill bits and bearings.
My guess is the bottom most components on top of the bearings are akin to thermite to melt them down, and the chips of rock on top likely act as a buffer to stabilize the process
Intrigued by the ingredients and mesmerized by the process but, am here to appreciate the finished product and the meticulous craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing👍
Really nice to watch with a pint of Stout after a busy day. Thanks for sharing.
Yin & Yang knife, nice.
👍
Craftsmanship salute! Therapeutic video, great work, looks beautiful.
Thanks 👍
Came here for a tanto, and an ad convinced me into buyng a square pillow.
This was the most impressive video I've ever seen on knife making. You even managed to top Bob Kramer. Congratulations.
You haven’t seen many videos huh
Can we get a pinned comment about what all went into the crucible? Old drill bits and ball bearings, but what was the rest of that stuff?
I got it today, ty. 🤗
👍🤝
You lucky bastard 😂
This is absolutely gorgeous. Yin Yang design makes it perfect.
Thanks 👍
I don’t even watch knife videos but damn, that thumbnail was hypnotizing!!!
no crap music! no reminiscing about some lost girlfriend! no shameful product placement! just a great forger doing great work. beautiful job man.
Thanks 👍
Calling this wootz is actually shamelessly plugging his own product. This guy has not posted a single video in which he makes wootz but in nearly every vid he claims it is wootz. He is a master craftsman and true artist but he is also either uneducated or a flat out liar. I have been chasing wootz for 19 of my 32 years of blade smithing and so far the only guy found that's managed to get it right is in this link ruclips.net/video/OP8PCkcBZU4/видео.html
@@patrickwalley9803 have you asked him why he insists its wootz?
@@jonnie13black I consider what he calls wootz and figure he just likes using fancy words to sell products. Not only does he use the term incorrectly he uses it inconsistently.
@@patrickwalley9803 ok i can understand your perspective. but he still has great skills from my zero experience in making knives opinion. pity he hasnt addressed your concerns. because misrepresentation is exactly that.
Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
This is not a knife, it’s an art masterpiece!
Thanks 👍
I was in a trance watching this😳. Beyond superb craftsmanship. WOW‼️

What a gorgeous piece of work!! I love the idea of using the dowel rod for tensioning the blade inside the saya!! Genius.

Its nice but not a tantio knife
@@wisdomfox857 yes im agree but your spelt wrong it was tanto not tantio

This is stunning work, only thing I don't like is the gluing of the tang.. I'm a big fan of the easy takedown aspect of Japanese blades.
👍
Do what you want to do - to do to perfection, no matter how small!
This shop could build an armoured vehicle!
What a huge anvil.
Keep the foot tapping, good omen!
👍😁
There is so much energy inbolded in steel production. The repurposing of steel is immensely gratifying.
I appreciate what's going on here but this is not wootz. The chemical composition is wrong though it is a high quality crucible steel it is just not wootz. Calling it wootz is like calling cast iron stainless because it had some nickel in it. But fantastic work! The end product is beautiful.
It is more like calling any brown bear a kodiak bear. Not only is wootz of a particular composition but it is also a particular ore from a particular part of India. It would be like saying tap water is Fiji water.
What exactly is Wootz?
@@onlybugwit it's a crucible steel made Frome ore with a particular chemical composition found in only one mine in the world. Aside from the ore composition a crucible is used to make it into a usable metal after which it is worked within a specific temperature window to produce a billet with a specific crystalline structure. That structure is what creates the pattern in the steel. Blades have to be ground from the billet because any further forging past the billet stage destroys that crystaline structure and it is no longer wootz. This guy is making pattern welded steels (incorrectly called Damascus) and plain crucible steel. He is making amazing blades of very high quality. He is an amazing craftsman but he is not making wootz

Nice knife thank you for the share
Thanks 👍
Great work. I hope you have someone to teach all this, and pass this art to the next generations.
One of the most beautiful knives I've Sean on forging channels!!
👍
Definitley not wootz or tanto, good work either way.
There are different variants of tanto
👍
I wish that my old shop teachers could have shown us what we could really do. I really want to try this with my kids.
👍
This might be th 10 time i watch this beautiful knife making in 1 month. Want to have that knife
Very nice, but what's in the nutrilon box? and the small crystals?
yeah I'm curious too!?
Borax. I can't say what the small crystals are, I'm assuming sulfur, original wootz was made with magnetite ore and carbon (in form of leaves and wood, he used charcoal I think) and chemical analysis point at sulfur impurities
Glass I think
Great My Friend.I Really Love your Crucibles.Amazing.

Ok, the entire process and final product was straight up beautiful.
Amazing craftsmanship and aesthetic balance. Awesome reuse of old material.
Wow... Its perfect

Beautiful work, never mind the nitpicking idiots who can hardly feed themselves with a table knife let alone make anything so perfectly lovely!
Thanks 👍💪
This needs more likes 😂
That was a captivating experience, with seriously amazing skills! With a beautiful product to finish wow !!!
This is not just a knife, it's a beautiful work of art. You may haven't noticed but in the ying yang representation in this knife the handle is the good and the blade zone is the evil. It could be interpreted as that even if something is evil like a knife, it can cause good in benevolent hands.
I’m having an existential crisis rn
Nice work. That said...The shape of blade is not Tanto. The pride of building such a work of art is so much better than anyting you can jist buy.
Thanks 👍. Kaiken knife is a kind of Tanto.
@@fz-makingknives3663 oh, nice. Thanks again!!!
What was that first blob thing he dropped in the water along with the blade?
Hot metal, to preheat the oil
Great design! I think its even more beautiful in its scabbard than out. Thanks for sharing!
using ball bearing for a different kind of use..................very cool indeed. ive heard about this from an old friend but never seen it been done. love the micarta too. one of my most enjoyable things i do in making slings
So. What was added into the crucible in the beginning??
Zinc
This is a beautiful piece, I'm dumbfounded by the amount of dislikes, fkin trolls, I think it's brilliant, well done, A Yuv It!!!
Unfortunately, racism against the Chinese has increased.
Its so soothing to see when machine presses the hot iron.

Beautiful work. So precise and measured with tool use. Its a joy to qatch an artist at work

What a master craftsman!!!
What's the baby formula and crushed glass used for..?
Dolomite for cleaning steel. Glass protection
I love that
Thanks 👍
I'm a simple man and this is an art I can appreciate.
A pleasure watching you work
What was the last 2 things you put in the crucible?
Dolomite and glass
@@fz-makingknives3663 ok thanks
👍
A beautiful, very well made knife but has absolutely nothing to do with wootz or tanto. With all due respect
All woozt steel is is crucible steel if we're talking about the classical use it'd be referred to as Damascus. And as a fine gentleman said somewhere here in the chat it is a tyep of tanto and is commonly used in wedding ceremonies.
👍💪
The last part where the knife is on a stand...it remembers me of the Japanese yakuza...you didn't obey orders or did something wrong...you have to cut off your pinky...very similar knife if not the real thing...amazing job man👍
most beautiful knife i've seen on youtube, and i've watched a lot of knife videos
Thanks 👍👍
Beautiful work came out gorgeous. But I'm not sure that is what would be called a tanto?
Correct. I would say more like a drop point.
Imagine this with grenadilla wood and maple. I really like the idea of symmetry and duality. I don't like the materials. It looks pretty plastic ish.
👍
Looks like delrin. So yeah, literally plastic. I agree a dark and light wood pairing would look and feel nicer.
Exactly my thoughs, such a beatifully forged blade deserved a fine wooden handle.
Thanks 👍
Highly skilled people always make it look easy. wish i could do that.
👍
Awesome knife and design. Love the incorporated yin and yang symbols!
Thanks 👍
Just trying to figure out why there's a bunch of thumbs down on this video? Looked pretty damn good to me.
Yes... This is a fine blade. It is only partly wootz though. I wouldn't downvote for that reason because I know that wootz is a tricky beast.
Just cuz you melt a bunch of Steel together doesn't mean you can call it wootz
The fact that he is melting steel together is proof that is isn't wootz at all. He is an amazing craftsman but from all of his videos Ive seen I really feel like he honestly has no clue what wootz actually is.
@@patrickwalley9803 or either what heat treating is, he didn't temper the blade, first time the knife drops it's gonna go in pieces..
Man i can't stop looking at this video it's just so vixen on how it's done that's a beautiful knife
Thanks 👍
Wer hätte nicht auch gerne so ein schönes Stück ☝️ Top Handwerk!!

Beautiful work!! I applaud your attention to detail. I like the shots of you wiping off your anvil. You know they say you can learn allot from a man by his hands. Yours are no stranger to the blade. Much discipline in those hands. Much love from Texas. Be Kind Stay Strong Always Question
Thanks for your 👍💪
Buying that many ball bearings probably put you on a watchlist somewhere
😂👍
This video was so cool that I had to buy the knife! I couldn’t believe it was still available. Can’t wait to hold it in my hand... MK
Grrr....
absolute beauty and elegance.
Thanks 👍
Just putting all the ingredients together and melting them doesnt make it wootz Damascus. The impurities that give wootz its distinct properties get burned off if any oxygen makes it into the crucible, which is why you're supposed to seal it. If the impurities you needed were there, it would have crumbled like a muffin as soon as you smacked it with that hammer, because real wootz needs to have the exterior of the cake decaborized, then cycled above and below glowing several times, then it needs to be carefully worked until it solidifies and forms the carbide structure that gives it that distinctive etch that looks like water on a rolling boil with cluster sheets of carbides. It's a nice piece, but it isn't wootz. The etch never lies.
thank you metallurgist ☺️
Grate job!...don't mind the haters, they can't even make a butterknife if there life depended on it.
One of the best handmade knife I have ever seen. You are a blessed man.
Thanks 👍
Fascinating how you make it all come together. What a beautiful knife.👍👍👍👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I respectfully suggest that you misunderstand the term "Wootz steel". The term " Damascus steel" could be used to discuss the the way the knife was made, but not Wootz. Excellent video and a very beautiful knife. Very well done.
But will it keal??
