COVID patient leaves Westmead Hospital after marathon 399-day admission

A 69-year-old man has defied the odds by walking out of Westmead Hospital after a marathon 399-day admission for COVID-19.
David Avila Mellado was clapped out by scores of staff in the first week of September as he left the hospital that had been his home for over 12 months, including a gruelling seven weeks in Westmead Hospital’s intensive care unit last year.
As he left hospital, David made an impassioned plea for people to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and prevent them from ending up in hospital.
“My recommendation and the final idea is tell the people: don’t wait. Try to get the vaccine as soon as possible,” he said.
