11:24 he quoted the La Folia chord progression here. La Folia is one of the oldest melodies and harmonic progressions in European recorded history, and countless composers have made pieces on it, including Liszt in his Spanish Rhapsody. edit: Dies Irae also fits under that chord progression which is weirdly satisfying.
La Folia is not the source for this. Liszt uses an exact setting of the Dies Irae chant by Louis Homet, in which the odd-numbered verses are sung in chant while the even-numbered verses employ four-part chordal harmony. Liszt uses this harmony to create a new set of variations in this part.
Superb Bartje Bartmans....I heard instrumental parts I didn't hear to well before brought out so well..Martin Roscoe and the BBC Philharmonic did a fantastic job as well as the great score...Thank you.

Ok, I thought this was the 1849 version when I found it, but great recording nevertheless. Noseda gets it right here, he is uneven in the symphonic poems.
A brilliant rendition, such clarity of solos I've never heard before. Totentanz might become the theme song for the Republican party or of everyone if Putin decides to end it ALL.
In fact there was the Dies Irea motive in The Shining but from another piece of music: "Dies Irae segment from "Symphonie fantastique" by Hector Berlioz, performed by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shining_(film)
6:14 I've never heard death this beautiful
Perhaps this section is about peaceful death - going out slowly in your sleep, surrounded by family and friends.
Well Liszt was very religious, so he think very optimistically about death actually, it can be seen in the 3rd movement of his 13th symphonic poem
Grazie Maestro, un lontano ricordo di quando lo ascoltava mio marito ! Forse ho il disco !!!

For the fellow horn players: The first few bars are for horn in D! (Until the mutua F of course)
Un Liszt che si esprime al meglio delle sue qualità di virtuoso pianista e tecnica orchestrale.
Grazie ancora a Bartje per la esaurientr consulenze

I knew this piece had dies irae but didn’t know that it has a specific different chord progression, interesting

@@Chromaticonmy mistake then.
You know it’s actually crazy how good and sophisticated that progression is, especially considering it being one of the oldest 🤯
Wow Bartok also played this . His recordings of Scarlatti tell us he was a fascinating musician !
I feel like this piece’s percussiveness predates Bartók’s own style. It wouldn’t surprise me if Liszt was one of Bartók’s inspirations.
The G Maj (add 9) chord gives me goosebumps all the time.
Magnificient
That's the Best Totentanz Sheet Video on RUclips i think. Very Thanks!

This would have been great in The Shining.
