  • "The Divine Jenny Lind" is a must-see video that showcases the incredible collaboration between P.T. Barnum and Jenny Lind, one of the most successful in music history. In the early 1850s, Barnum brought the talented Swedish soprano, known as the "Swedish Nightingale," to the United States on a tour that took the country by storm. Lind's pure voice and charitable nature, along with Barnum's masterful promotion, made her concerts the hottest ticket in town. Don't miss this presentation of the Jenny Lind and Barnum story.

    Jenny was my great great grandmother. I grew up hearing everything about her and also found my talent in singing through her encouragement.

      That's amazing! I'd like to learn more about your great great grandmother. Can you recommend any books about her?

      Jenny Lind wrote to the chair of the hospital management committee:
      “Of all the money which God allowed me to give away when my poor throat could call an audience to listen to it’s production. None has borne a more nobler fruit than the Jenny Lind Hospital of Norwich.”

    I learned about her through the Marianne Faithful song "I've done it Again" performed by Grace Jones.
    The line in the song is "I was there when Jenny Lind first sang". Then I looked her up.
    Amazing woman!

    She had the admiration of several composers, most notably Felix Mendelssohn. Her US tour garnered 5 million in today’s dollars.

    *... and she performed in Memphis! 🐾 Way neat!*
    $24M in gross earnings.

    Really neat video. They really didn't do her justice in The Greatest Showman did they? She seems much more wholesome and classy!

      JL embodied 'wholesome and classy' during her lifetime. A far cry from how she (and he) was depicted in the GS movie. Looking forward to doing a fully JL presentation soon! Fingers crossed the Museum gets the NEH grant! Thank you!

    I found out about Jenny because of a painting of her I found in a thrift store. I felt attached to the painting. Many people don’t know about her, but only from the character in the greatest show men. I wish more people knew the real her!

    Why are all of the currency denominations in Old Dollars.
    Where is the French Franc or Deutschmarc?

      Great question! The research and primary sources are from 19th century American documents so the figures are represented in the currency of the genre. What an interesting idea to look into conversions to determine international valuations. Thanks for the comment!

      I'd recommend learning the history of Jenny Lind then!

    • @hntrains2
      @hntrains2 7 месяцев назад

      @@BarnumMuseum, that she existed does not make her the most famous artist in the world. That she could sing or that certain people knew about her will not do that, either.

    • @BarnumMuseum
      @BarnumMuseum  7 месяцев назад +2

      @@hntrains2 Again, I would recommend that you learn about PT Barnum and Jenny Lind's history. You're in the right place! Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, was the 19th century's most celebrated and beloved singer. She was an international superstar with an immense following during her time. Her impact on the world's stage is an undeniable fact.

    • @hntrains2
      @hntrains2 7 месяцев назад

      @@BarnumMuseum, you rely on stories, which can be anything anyone wants them to be since there are no recordings to show how good her voice was, including/especially if compared to others. Being famous is far from being good, let alone "the best" (even the sound of those words can make one cringe).
