Agree they seem to improve their strategies from year to year. For 8 years they couldn’t jump the 9 1/2 feet from fence to feeder on pole, this year the can.
I think none of us want to harm the squirrels, it's just they dump the seed, bury it in our flower beds, chew up the feeders. And, push the birds away.
i stumbled upon the perfect anti squirrel feeder long ago, on accident. my Ex girlfriend bought this hangar that is used to hang decoration on your lawn. its a solid piece of iron rod, with a bent top that is shaped like a flourish with a hook end for hanging things. it was super heavy duty & weighed about 50lbs & it only bent when a bear leaned on it. it was under an inch thick & rounded , not square , so like a long narrow pipe. it was over 6 feet tall. i stuck it in a bucket & hung a bird feeder from it for over 5 years & not once did a squirrel get to it. they ate the seeds on the ground, but couldnt climb it. they tried like hell for a while, but i guess it was too narrow, or they didnt like that it was stuck in a bucket & not the ground, either way it worked perfectly
This reminds me of the "Daylight Robbery" program that was made in Great Britain. They rigged up obstacles such as this one and made them increasingly harder as the squirrels figured them out. There was one mama squirrel who was especially talented, but she was very entertaining.
Plastic tubing 3/4 inch on both sides of three clothes line feeders worked for me. Blue Jays and blackbirds scatter black oil sunflower seeds under feeders. Squirrels and skunks provide clean up. So everyone is happy.
? so do all wild animals, but we can't feed them all, and the more we do, the more they lose their learned/innate survival skills, and the more they procreate leading to eventual overpopulation/nuisance/starvation anyway... they can't all be our "pets"...
Hanging bird feeders from trees is convenient but squirrels make this impractical. Bird Feeders need to be placed far enough away from homes and trees that squirrels can not jump onto them. Then drive a short section of thin, straight, pipe into the ground, long enough that it will reliably support a wider pole around it. Then get a 2" diameter section of PVC pipe approx 4 -5 ' long from Home Depot and place it over/around the thin diameter wrought iron post you are currently using. Squirrels can not climb wide diameter poles. I also have a baffle that sits atop the 2" diameter length and another narrower diameter section above the baffle and supported by it. I have multiple feeders supported by each pole. This also makes it easy to take down your feeders if you ever need to.
@@patperry1 There are squirrels in my neighbourhood that think nothing of going up a four inch diameter plastic drainpipe, greased, and jumping onto and penetrating a metal cage and eating my bird seed. Furthermore, there is hot chilli powder in with the seed and they're not supposed to like that either. I wouldn't mind but they eat the lot in one go and the birds go without.
Squirrels love peanuts and peanut butter. I began trapping squirrels at the base of my feeders 4 years ago thinking that if I disposed of a handful, they would all be gone. 280 squirrels later they continue to come! I think one of my neighbors is busing them in from somewhere else but I can't prove it.
Nope, they're too gluttonous to give up a food source. People think they're so intelligent but they're simply food driven and persistent. If they were smart they'd learn where they weren't welcome.
I made one of these and had hours of fun watching the squirrels being flipped off the wire and my neighbor said she had so much fun also watching the squirrels not making it to the bird feeder they do work
I've been sharing this idea for years, and have listed it on Quirky .com. I use 16oz empty water bottles, and stainless steel wire. The bottles have no problem spinning, and the squirrels eventually give up trying. This allows you to put your feeders anywhere on the line. I have thought of putting a light on the end which would act as a sort of Chinese lantern affect at night. After a rain storm some of the bottles will get water in them which can give of a prism like affect, and that is pretty.
I tried this way and thought i had won but eventually the wretch chewed through the cord and crashed the whole thing to the floor, broke the feeder and got all the seeds and peanuts which were polished of by the flaming pigeons.
I see ur point about them wanting to eat and they r cute, but they can be as destructive as rats when it comes to chewing. So sometimes I put seed out on the ground away from my feeders for them, LoL.
+Robert Clark I don't think gravity would help in that case. this one works because the squirrels weight makes the bottle spin. in the vertical case, the spin would be perpendicular to that, and thus the squirrel would probably just climb up.
No, it doesn't. They jump from the bottle on to the top of the feeder and hang from their little back paws over the side to reach the tray at the bottom
Your best solution for the squirrel problem is mix cayenne pepper and chili pepper Hot Chili Pepper it will not harm the birds the squirrels and all other Critters don't like it because it's too hot and they will leave your bird Peter alone
I'm the exact opposite, my house is a squirrel haven. Idk why people like birds over squirrels, you can tame and pet these cute cuddly guys, birds are boring.

Good Job, guys! Simple, effective & inexpensive... Oh Yes!!

Yep, the bad part is with all the shaking they still know plenty of seeds out and they go down to the ground and get them, they are RELENTLESS!

Yes, and the children are smart - they're trying to guess what the squirrel will do next, as well!

harold to squirrel says,, hay butch , u going with me to the feeder. No, not today my arms and legs are killing me from yesterday.
Maybe add some home made PVC blades to the bottles so they will spin with the wind and it will really give squirrels a hard time.

Use plastic pex pipe. Looks better. Nice idea though.
