Ed Roth ( Big Daddy) used to stay at my home when he was showings NY and NJ. He taught me a lot especially about hand brush work.I was very shocked to hear of his passing years ago. We talked about a lot of personal things between us. I was already a pinstriper and he was impressed with my work which was a surprise to me coming from the very best. He work at Knocks Bury farm as a sign painter before he relocated to Utah. Soft spoken gentleman with genuines Gift from God. He gave me a model of his bubble top car and I am blessed to have pictures of the Two of us together. He was a genius in design and had patience more than anyone I have ever known.
I had all the Rat Fink Trading Cards Loved all the Big Daddy, George Barrios & Dean Jeffries Cars. My first Magazine subscription was Rod & Custom. Everyone else got Hot Rod. Not me. Cheers. Glad it’s still alive.
Actually, I have one that Ed " Big Daddy " gave to me when were doing shows together " The Outlaw" named that because his original name for that car was Excalibur. The name was changed to "The Outlaw" because many people wouldn't bring their cars to the show because, his concepts were light years ahead! Funny, I had the same experience showing my 3 wheeler called "Carisma" 35 years before Elizabeth Taylor used the name for her perfume. Anyway my bike which was built out of junk and reworked extensively by the grace of God to glorify his name. I realize that I competed against like Les Dunham who built all the cars for the " Super Fly " for the movies and others which makes me feel like I am bragging but honestly I am a moron! Ok, I provided the hands and God sends a spirit to guide me. God willing I will be out there again but again, this isn't about me. Ed Roth who truly was a gift from God, and he would be the first to agree with me.
And boy were they a couple of characters. Fun Dutch was well he was let’s just say a character. He had an elaborate story about how he came up with the idea to pinstripe hot rods. I should put it to tape some time
I couldn't agree more because Von Dutch and Ed " Big Daddy" Roth inspired one another. Von Dutch actually, was the father of Pinstriping but no one knew this until " Big Daddy " brought Von Dutch to the national media.
I found it because I watched a Dennis Gage video on the DreamTruck that almost all the big customizers had a part in creating except VonDutch and Ed Roth so I was thinking about Ed Roth and I remembered another video you did and I watched a while ago so I thought I’d watch it again but realized this was another one you did so I watched it as I enjoy the way you do your channel
I actually found this because of a childhood tv show that paid homage to ed roths work. It was called Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy (episode name- Hog Wild). I loved the style and have been trying to find out what it was they were referring to. I am now trying to emulate his art style in my sketchbook. What a fun way to make art! I hope one day to attend the reunion of rat fink... but i live so far away in massachusetts haha
The Powerpuff Girls had mega references to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. The Gangreen Gang themselves are heavily inspired by Rat Fink (heck, Grubber looks like a human hunchback version of Rat Fink), and in one of the worst episodes "Girls Gone Mild", the Dukes of Doom look like enemies/enemies of Rat Fink.
Thanks! I love it down there, my brother has been moving to Spring City for like 5 years, he's there about half the time now. And I was planning on moving there as well, but don't think I will be able to at this point. But I did buy a house there, and actually slept in it for the first time during the Rat Fink Reunion. FUN
Ed " Big Daddy" Roth never had taken the time to screw around! People who are gifted with such creative genius don't know the meaning of screwing around. I knew him personally and spent much time with him, and he was a kind, passionate professional way ahead of his time!
I was surfing around & found this British guy who built a car not unlike Big Daddy hisself. so I looked up Ed Roth & found you. Good stuff from my youth. I still have the model of the cherry bomb & orange hauler that was from Barris. A lil piece of my youth. And the best pinewood derby car I ever built I hand carved with a dremel to look like a Jordan BRM F1 from '65.
You are fortunate to have a piece of what I believe to be the greatest Artst', Designer and Mechanical Systems Design Engineer like yours truly but, I am on a miniscule scale mainly because, I worked alone but, by the grace of God which my friend Ed " Big Daddy " Roth was truly blessed abundtly! His body of work still blows my mind even to this day! He and I worked for the same number of years creating different concepts on different coasts, Ed in the west and my stuff in the East. I wished I had the mind set to visit him in the late sixtys and early seventys when I was painting for Denvers Custom Choppers and changed the way paint was done in Southern California. I wasn't smart enough to visit him because his design shop and creations, wasn't so far from where he was creating so many of things, that were, and are so far ahead of the curve. Ed was, and still is a Giant in Creativity. Because I am a little neieve with no ego because, what ever I did or have created in that time period always makes me wonder what was I doing? while Ed's work was blowing away the competition. He was a giant whale, while I little was a guppy, in the land of original and futuristic concepts. I remember when staying at my home in LI, NY Ed was always up and dressed drawing cartoons early in the morning when I came down from the second floor where I slept, he was always so appreciative and one of the kindest Gentlemen I was blessed to be associated with. Ed, gave me the model or the Original Outlaw Car models and is one of my prized and extremely greatest things that he gave to me also being blessed to be in company. Things he showed me about lettering and how to due my floor in my 1936 Ford, Blown and Injected Hemi that I was building for the ISCA show circuit because, i was the National Show winner from 1968 until 1972 with my 3 wheel motorcycle competing against cars and motorcycles that never lost in competition until i was blessed to build my 3 wheeler thats still on RUclips. My next brilliant plan was to back up my winning career with this car but, I failed to mention that to Ed. I never told him that I had all of his little magazines that he produced. He has inspired me and showed me very special ways of doing things. I truly love and miss this genius and I thank God for his decision to turn to "Jesus Christ" two years before God, wanted this genius to make things in heaven 🙏
This is INSANELY popular in Okinawa Japan. The shirts go for around $50 or more. The statues, about a foot tall are upwards of hundreds of dollars. It's in all the tattoo shops and such. Mangasuka is a store that sells collectables and clothes they have a lot of the statues and toys. I bought a shirt the other day. I never knew anything about it until I moved here.
As kids, Karen and I both were Rat Fink fans! Our friends we’re all Rat Fink fans! I always wanted to wear my Rat Fink shirts to school, but they were forbidden. But I read the magazines and collected all of the figures. And had a real hero worship growing with Ed Roth! Certainly never thought I would get to know him. And Karen’s friend ended up, marrying him!
When I went to Manti , it was for Ed’s funeral, where me ,Magoo, Bob Spina, Bobbo Dun all pinstriped Ed’s coffin, the saddest thing I’ve ever done. On Oct.17 th the History channel will air “Fully Torqued” about the restoration of VonDutch’s bus.
Ed " Big Daddy " Roths and I gravitated together because we were pinstripes. Bob Spina was a friend who many years ago raced me on the street and beat me. I was not a happy camper because, Bob's comments were, " My bike was a bag of Shi. So, I had taken my bike reworked my motor to 91 inches was so many motor changes with the help of Jerry Branch" who explained that the headwork I did to my knuckle head motor, out flowed a reworked shovel head! This bag shi. Ran the oil through the frame and the gas tank was used the seat. 40 years later Harley Davison thought it was their original idea. Interesting? My bike was 9' feet 7 inches long and about the same height as a pro stock of today. I called Bob Spina up and said " hey Bob, let's race again" funny, for some strange reason he heard about my bike and refused! Bob never realized that I was the one who welded up all his transmissions from his racing top fuel days through Eastern Motorcycle. Bob is my friend and I hope to see him again at the track, God Willing. Small world 🌎

Right, Check ratfink.com. And for some fun, build a rat pinewood derby car! They have a class for looks and one for speed. They all race, but a big Rat Fink sticking out tends to slow things down a bit. And bring a custom. But mostly bring yourself!
