I think this is the game that a lot of people realized that Nobuo Uematsu really is a master at music creation. There's a good reason he is treated as gaming royalty.
I feel like a big thing about FFVI's original development is how everyone was just allowed to go big with their assignments. Which I feel gives us the best things in FFVI like the music and the memorable characters. But also it's biggest flaw, how it was too big and ambitious for the SNES. Which meant a lot had to be cut or edited down.
As a Japanese who played this game in his childhood, I feel pleased to have seen it universally appreciated across generations and countries. Having watched through the remastered English version, I found no essential change due to the remastering and localisation from the original Japanese version. Quite faithful, good remastering, as I take many other classics distorted in weird manners into account.
Amazing moment many don't see at 37:02. If you don't bring Sabin and Edgar you never realize the impact of this on another scene. When the twins flip a coin in their youth, Sabin gets to choose his freedom. Edgar knows his brother wants to leave but feels guilty not honoring their family obligation. He rigs the coin toss to lose so Sabin can choose his freedom and Edgar can choose to take on the heavy burden of the crown. He does everything to spare his brother any more pain after losing their parents while he is hurting too. Only here does Sabin realize Edgar did everything to make Sabin happy in secret. That's a big brother.
I’ll never forget playing the opera scene in 94. My 12 year old mind was blown. You really FELT that this is the first time something like this had ever been created. Video games didn't try for this level of emotion back then. It stirred the imagination as well as the heart. Made all the more so by the tragedy of Celes’ story arch later. Again, all new concepts. Early transcendence of video games becoming an art form. Thank you for going on this journey. It’s been so fun discovering this play through. This is my favorite game of all time.
The opera scene is one of the most legendary moments in the entire franchise, if not all of gaming. While I still prefer the SNES lyrics, Locke getting flustered over how good Celes looks is always a funny/cute moment. Not to mention Ultros's battle theme during his crashing the opera is beyond catchy. Nobuo Uematsu; the John Williams of video game composers.
The opera house was mind-blowing in 1994. We'd never seen anything like it! Poor Celes, having to be everyone's mirror. To the player she's a mirror of Terra--sky and ice vs earth and fire but still basically feels like an echo, a former imperial soldier with magical powers that Locke rescues. To Locke she's a mirror of Rachel, a girl in need he can save; to Setzer and the Impresario she's a substitute for Maria. But nobody--at least, up until this point in the game--sees her as her own person. The opera is a mirror too--the whole game is structured as one musically, with an overture, lietmotifs, dances, distinct acts, all building to a massive musical finale. It's a masterpiece.
Damn dude, like, I've noticed all those things, but you worded it really well. Thinking about it, I'd say that's the reason she's one of my favorite FF/VG characters. As you said, she's a mirror, but she proves to be stronger than all of her reflections. She's better at being Maria than Maria, she out gambles the Gambler, she saves Locke and allies a little after this. Actually, she straight up says "Let me save you life" before doing something magical.
"How many of you wish you could experience Final Fantasy VI for the first time again?" That's the primary reason I started watching all these reaction channels.
Are you kidding!? RIGHT HERE!☝️ I played the Original back when it came out and it was F- AWESOME!! Everything About it! The Plot! The characters! The Music! Everything About it was so incredible! I wish I could play this game and have the same feeling all over again! 🥰
When I first saw this scene back in 1994, my thought was “If a video game can do this NOW what will they be able to do in the future?” I didn’t realize then that this scene would continue to stun people many years into the future, whichever version you prefer. It just goes to show that it’s the talented people who make games special, not the technology per se. Though I do hear echoes of Celes’ theme in FFVIIs “Eyes on Me,” FFIXs “Melodies of Life” and FFXs “Suteki Da Ne?”
I'm a massive fan of the original SNES version (it's my 2nd favorite game of all time) and the music is one of the best things about it. I never thought any re-release or remaster would ever be able to top the original soundtrack (the game boy advance version butchered the music, imo). But watching you play through the remaster and listening to the tracks, I've never been so happy to be proven wrong. All of the remastered tracks are wonderful, especially the opera featuring real vocals.
"Leave the past behind our kingdom is... shit.." - The scene already had me tearing up, then I couldn't stop laughing, wonderful moment in the game and the commentary.
Now you know why the Opera scene is so legendary. For an extra special version, one of the Games Done Quick charity streams had two people actually singing the opera live. It is on the uTubes somewhere. (Well before this remaster came along, and we had only the SNES MIDI player to represent 'singing.') I love being a troll and saying this, but it is actually true - this is the best form of FF to me. Without 6 breaking so many of the molds and formulas of previous games, who knows what the series would have ended up looking like. The sprites are so expressive, the characterizations and quirks so entertaining. And the random ass shit. You can't go wrong with Ultros and random ass shit. Well, you can, actually, but FF6 didn't. 29:45 "Everybody hold tight, we're doing _opera things,_ okay?" Classic
Ok, so one thing I noticed on my last playthrough of this game that never hear anyone bring up is how part of the melody Prince Ralse sings at 22:32 is played as a motif in the final dungeon. What I love about the opera scene is it's this miniature retelling of Celes's inner conflict between who she loves and her role as (former) Imperial General. It's brilliant!
This game preaty much set up what Final Fantasy games were in the 90. And they did it on 32 MB cartridge. This is why it's still for me best Final Fantasy entry. And if you don't agree just remember. Toby Fox made in Undertale parody of opera scene for Mettaton
Final Fantasy VI is my favorite of the Final Fantasy games. The amount of emotion in this story. I cried a lot during my first time playing this game. To this day, at 43 years old, I still cry whenever I hear the Aria/Celes' theme, because of the emotion tied into it. Celes is my favorite character.
The opera scene was awesome in the SNES original, it just is totally mind blowing in the Pixel Remaster version! They added voices and different camera angles!
omg after all these years, I have never noticed (until you mentioned it) that Locke accidentally refers to Maria as Celes when he crashes the opera. That's so hilarious.
Edit: Yes, it was WAY ahead of its time! And as for the storytelling in this game, it still smokes most games today. I much prefer the opera scene on the snes, it's got much better lyrics, the volume of the instruments is mixed much better and I hate the reed-thin voice in this version. Still, Uematsu's music is unforgettable, the story and pacing of the entire opera house event are flat-out amazing and all the subtleties in it are basically still there (even though a bunch of lines were butchered in this version).
Was looking forward most to your blind reaction to this part and was not disappointed. You even got the bonus of Sabin realizing it's not the first time that coin has been used, which doesn't happen if you don't bring him along for the opera. Experiencing the Pixel Remaster of this scene is so interesting for me because it's obviously not exactly what I played from way back when, but it's like... they created the version that my 13-year-old self imagined was always there. The orchestration for both the opera and Setzer's theme, the singing with real voices, it's just such a great remaster of an iconic classic.
This is probably one of the most iconic scenes in all of video game history, but with the PR remaster, I am not sure why they chose to take out the music during the scene transitions, in the original game, there is no pauses with the acception of when ultra's crashes down but for the most part, the music continues consistently. Though I can't complain because what they did for the Opera scene using the 2D HD style and voice work was amazing.
Oh yea Im Jelly. But to be honest experiencing it with you brings back all these memories of sitting on front of my SNES. The opera is one of three scenes I really remember. Id never been exposed to operatic singing before (even in a game) so the music was so different. Then I found Phantom of the Opera :D Final Fantasy was named because it was the last game they were going to put out. So they did whatever they wanted in it and folks liked it :D
I bet that conversation where Locke warned the impresario about Ultros was pretty interesting. "Hey, uhh, a weird talking octopus creature thingy is gonna mess with the opera to get back at us "
Aside of the opera and the adventure, another thing I love about the game is Ultros. When I first encountered it, that silly octopus showed up in the river. I thought it was just a mere expendable enemy with a weird personality. But then to my surprise when it shows up at the Opera House. I mean an Octopus in dry land and indoors?! Monsters sometimes have their limits. This creature does whatever it pleases. Edit: Oh and despite the creepy atmosphere in the Ghost Train, Sabin would just sit, demands food and the Ghost delivers.
The Opera scene took my breath away back when I played the original. It was so different from anything I had experienced before. The "singing" was amazing too. Synthesized vocals "singing" notes, it was crazy how well it emulated operatic singing (with such a limited range of sounds). The original OST version probably sounds strange to modern ears, but it brought tears to my eyes when I heard it back then. It was where an already 10/10 soundtrack became legendary and went way beyond "just" video game music.
@@bunnytails I'm glad you took the time to give a listen to the OSV (I still tear up when listening to some of the tracks from it, especially Relm's Theme). It still blows my mind to think of Nobuo Uematsu creating a masterpiece soundtrack that is on par with classical music, doing it essentially in MIDI format. I honestly have never seen your streams or VODs before this, but randomly stumbled upon your stuff when looking for reactions to Dancing Mad/the final fight against Kefka. I'm so glad to see people give this old gem a try who are enjoying all the same aspects of it that resonated with ppl like me nearly 30 years ago (my gosh I'm old). Love your reaction. The pixel remaster did a great job improving the opera scenes and even added singing. Too bad some people still have those nostalgia goggles on and don't like the new opera stuff.
Wow, they actually put singing in the opera scene, that is amazing, that was not in the original and it sounds beautiful. I really wish I could play the pixel remasters now even more so. I can’t wait to continue this journey with you playing this game, it’s like I’m reliving the first time I played it all over again, of course, with slightly different choices made. Lol. 20:24
Nice to hear someone play this game for the first time and enjoy it so much, and yes, awesome people in Zozo, never heard of it though. Lol. *sigh* I miss video games I used to replay this game all the time with all of my other RPG favorites I really miss video games.
@@bunnytails no, I can’t play anymore. My name tag is actually quite literal, my vision went dark a couple years ago, actually right before Covid shut down so I’m completely blind and can no longer play video games. It’s a bummer but I do have very fun memories. And with medical science, making its leaps and bounds, as it does, maybe someday. .. but until then, I am very happy going into work, wearing a T-shirt that says, “I was hit by a BLIND Spell and our White Mage was SILENCED, do you have a REMEDY?
@@Dakasami Oh geez, I am so sorry to hear that! So you can only hear my videos? I always try to play with people who are mainly only listening in mind (like multitasking), but I never thought it would be useful for your specific situation. And that t-shirt sounds amazing!
@@bunnytails yeah, I can only hear the video, so I really do appreciate that you read the dialogue, and I very much appreciate that you do different voices for the characters because not a lot of people do that, and it sort of brings it to life. And you have a very nice voice, do you by any chance do audiobooks? might wanna consider it as career. If you like that, I actually have another T-shirt with a stick figure man holding two blind sticks, and the caption reads, “I don’t need vision, I use the Force “
I'm in the same area you are at in Final Fantasy 6, the opera is awesome. When you hear it on Final Fantasy 3 the singing is different the way it sounds, it sounds like an actual opera.
@bunnytails Even the opera scene not having vocals on the Snes version it was still great. When I ran across your video and saw they added vocals to the opera scene I thought it was a very nice touch they added it.
If I'm not mistaken, in the pixel remaster, they specifically got someone who was a more amateur singer to reflect that Celes herself was doing this in the spur of the moment and wasn't trained.
I think that’s a great decision. If every singer in any game/show/movie was a trained professional things would get stale. Similar to a game I finished recently, AI: the Somnium Files, the idol character is not the best singer, but there is a certain charm to that
I can't believe we're at the Opera already 🤩 Was stunned by this part in the original, but I love what they did here even more! Brace yourself Bunny, this game will keep on surprising you, I promise! Have fun and enjoy the rest of this incredible journey 💪😊
Wow I have to admit, I only found this on a whim because something reminded me of this section of the game. Not just the opera, but the goings on around it, context which is lost when people only hear "opera scene". I had assumed the Pixel Remaster version didn't add anything of value or change much (I just thought they looked ugly compared to SNES and had hard to read fonts, so I didn't look into it further), but I have to admit after seeing this... I actually like both versions. This also reminded me of what seem to be really little known scenes that were made for the PS1 version of FFVI. I had downloaded them on my computer way back when and forgot they existed for a long time, but there's a cool opening sequence and an ending which has a wordless singing version of the opera. Lots of reused footage in both but they were so well directed.
I am glad to hear you like both versions. The original can never truly be topped, for someone who grew up with that version, but this version is nice to have to live alongside it.
I can’t express how much I love this opera scene with words. It brings me so much joy every time. It makes me sad this game gets overshadowed by the fandom for games like ff VII or ff X, whitch while they are really good in their own right, I like ff VI much better.
Hopefully more people can play this pixel remaster for the first time like me, and see how amazing this game is. I was imagining experiencing this back in '94 while playing and was pretty overwhelmed by how beautiful this was.
The remastered tracks of this version are also astonishingly accurate to what the originals intended to be, but couldn’t due to the limitations the snes had.
@@pokejox3416 I can definitely hear it. I’ve heard some of the original songs and they sound sooo good. But some of the remastered versions are just gorgeous without those limitations.
I'd heard that the opera scene had gotten the real deluxe upgrade in the pixel remaster, and I had avoided seeing it, thinking it couldn't live up to the hype. As it turns out, the hype was barely a shadow of how great that was.
The fact that I am hearing what so many people who are fans of the original are enjoying this version so much makes me really happy. It's nice when a company takes the time and care to enhance a beloved game without changing too much or losing that original charm.
Setzer made an appearance in Kingdom Hearts 2. Perhaps that's where you heard his name before. Or maybe you know of the guitarist Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats.
This was essentially my first introduction to opera. I think because of that, I have not enjoyed any other opera. None of them are as good. Go ahead, and tell me what other opera ends with a bunch of adventureers dropping in and fighting a giant octopus?!?! no way to top it really. FF6 is really good at character development and lore despite the bloated cast. Even though some aspects are a lot simpler, it amazes me what one or two lines in this game with the limited sprite work can do to convey emotion, than many current games can't do with full 3d and hours of cutscenes.
Lol true! No opera can compare to that. 🤣 I think I touch on a similar point a bit later on with how well they convey an emotion and make you feel something with such limited resources.
Ugh that's such a pain. I'm sorry to hear your internet was being shitty during one of the most amazing scenes in this game. I was hoping to hear your thoughts on it but I guess the issues might have distracted you from it.
@@bunnytails yeah it sucked it had been cutting in and out for about a day and a half honestly if they don't lower my bill and get me on a new contract by the time I pay the next bill I might have the cable and internet shut off there is no way I can keep paying what I paid last month because my contract was finally up and it sucks because where I live we only have one cable and internet provider so it's a monopoly with them they can charge whatever they want because they own all the poles and lines Now that it seems to be back to normal I will try maybe Sunday and rewatch the episode it looked really good from what I could tell

Nice to hear someone play this game for the first time and enjoy it so much, and yes, awesome people in Zozo, never heard of it though. Lol.
*sigh* I miss video games I used to replay this game all the time with all of my other RPG favorites I really miss video games.
Why do you miss video games? You can't play anymore? :(
@@bunnytails no, I can’t play anymore.
Buns, back in the dark times when I played this, I didn't have the internet. I had a guide book as thick as a dictionary!😵
Haha that's awesome! I miss those days!
You had a guide book? Nice. I just had the trusty map that came with the game cartridge.
I'm in the same area you are at in Final Fantasy 6, the opera is awesome. When you hear it on Final Fantasy 3 the singing is different the way it sounds, it sounds like an actual opera.
2023 and still the best Final Fantasy in the series.
It's one of my new favorites!
@bunnytails Even the opera scene not having vocals on the Snes version it was still great. When I ran across your video and saw they added vocals to the opera scene I thought it was a very nice touch they added it.
Waow that song in opera house was beautiful, go Celes
Yeah, it was!
Gau is also a great help
This scene loses it's impact on current hardware because it was ahead of it's time on the old SNES
This opera has been done IRL, now 11-12 years past but still on you tube. Look for Maria and Draco.
I hope this playthrough can bring some joy to your day! :D
One of The Peak Fiction Moment in Final Fantasy History
It was amazing.
I’m 2 years late but if you ever get the chance to go see Distant Worlds in concert and hear this song… I highly recommend
I would love to!!
one of the best parts in the game
Yes, indeed!
@@bunnytails for sure when i had a flute i could play celes' opera theme by ear but its been years since i had one now
@@randyfoster4666 That's really cool!
I am playing it for the first time as well
Awesome!! Hope you’re enjoying it!
If you can handle actual opera music there is an old version that is absolutely amazing on one of the osts from back then
Where can I find it?
This version is cool too
I'd heard that the opera scene had gotten the real deluxe upgrade in the pixel remaster, and I had avoided seeing it, thinking it couldn't live up to the hype. As it turns out, the hype was barely a shadow of how great that was.
The fact that I am hearing what so many people who are fans of the original are enjoying this version so much makes me really happy. It's nice when a company takes the time and care to enhance a beloved game without changing too much or losing that original charm.
Wow i never realized its the same setzer in kh2 🤣 he looks a lot younger than in kh2
Hehe yup!
try chrono trigger if you haven't already. it's next level as well.
I've played it actually :)
Here I go crying again
Setzer made an appearance in Kingdom Hearts 2. Perhaps that's where you heard his name before. Or maybe you know of the guitarist Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats.
Yes, I recognized the name from KH2!
Leave the past behind! Our kingdom is....Well shit.
I like how they made Celes not a quite perfect singer. She's off key here and there. But that is on purpose.
they Just didn't have enough money
song at the beginning name?
"What is happening in this game?" My thoughts exactly
That was some toin coss :P
Wondering if this made it too east?
If you like rock search up darkness and starlight by the black mages..its a opera rock song and its so good..its in Japanese but it sounds better lol
Never heard of this before!! Thanks, I'm about halfway through listening and it is awesome!
I think I touch on a similar point a bit later on with how well they convey an emotion and make you feel something with such limited resources.
Juego hecho con amor
You're so awesome!
Thanks for playing one of my favorite game ever;
Aww thank you!!! And you’re welcome! Very special game.
nice episode it would have been better if my internet didn't keep going in and out literally took me almost 2 hours to watch this i about gave up
Ugh that's such a pain. I'm sorry to hear your internet was being shitty during one of the most amazing scenes in this game. I was hoping to hear your thoughts on it but I guess the issues might have distracted you from it.
@@bunnytails yeah it sucked it had been cutting in and out for about a day and a half honestly if they don't lower my bill and get me on a new contract by the time I pay the next bill I might have the cable and internet shut off there is no way I can keep paying what I paid last month because my contract was finally up and it sucks because where I live we only have one cable and internet provider so it's a monopoly with them they can charge whatever they want because they own all the poles and lines
Now that it seems to be back to normal I will try maybe Sunday and rewatch the episode it looked really good from what I could tell
