  • The Orange Popsicle is a BC salmon / steelhead fly pattern from Bill Luscombe. You may want to swap out the mallard for some stringer barred teal flank. If you have seal dubbing at your disposal, it would also work quite well for this fly.

Chimo! Nice one Darren, the more I see the STS dubbing the more I like it. Thanks for the tip on the wing. Do you buy your mallard flank in bulk then sort through it? Nice to see another post too! Chimo cheers 👍🎃🍻

+Joe Duca Chimo! I don't buy the mallard in bulk, I do have a full pelt I bought a few years ago that I use. I actually don't use mallard all that much, but got the skin to tie some Rangeley patterns. The packaged flank is usually much to curved to use. the feathers off the skin are a little easier to work with.

Piscator Flies I agree, the pelts are better especially if you want to have a matched pair. I had a few plucked feathers from hunting to use then bought bulk bags of natural and dyed wood duck (color sucked). Price was right, years ago, but they're like left overs from the pillow factory lol. Lots of sorting. I bought them for wings, tails and zugbug wing case and the hackle on Gartside soft hackles. Other than that I didn't use them often, and they skew a lot when winding, at least I didn't like the way it looked. We get a few birds from training and hunt tests for our dogs now, some are past the use by date ;-) others are fine for "pluck & choose" Finally got a whole mallard drake from a friend, gorgeous. I thought I could use the cdc but no luck, don't know what I'm fishing for, lol. Have you ever used the green head feathers or are they too short? I wanted to use the male wood duck head crest, resembles peacock sword, but my pelts spoiled when our extra fridge died. But I have more than enough plucked feathers now, sandwich bags full, from my friend who unfortunately passed away 😢 he was a great guy, very "old school" outdoors man.
Ok Darren, thanks again. 👋Chimo! Almost forgot, milkweed search, any luck? Go to the j.Stockard website, their blog, introduced their list of tyers. One female tyer, I believe, has a pattern for milkweed. I don't know if they're going to feature it or it's on the tyer's social media. Cheers 👍😎🍻

+Joe Duca It's good to have friends who hunt. I'm stocked on deer for at least a lifetime I think. I've tried using the drake head feathers, but unless you're tying really small flies, I don't find them too useful. That being said, they do make some nice accent feathers for cheeks or maybe even as eyes. I haven't checked out JS recently, They charge way too much for shipping to Canada. I think it starts at $30 which is a shame. No luck with the milkweed, I haven't been out walking, the weather is a little wet here now. 👍😎🍻

Piscator Flies How about the male wood duck head crest feathers? I never got a chance, had to trash 2 pelts, plus a mallard hen. Regarding milkweed, the pro tyer at JS is Nome Buckman from Portland ME. She's on Instagram (I'm not, you?), Angler of the year for WI Woman Fish, says she's a streamer junkie, Carrie Stevens style - had flies published in S. Wright's Heritage FS, contributing editor of Dun Magazine where she published her milkweed and other plant based patterns.
I had an eye doctor exam this afternoon, my pupils are still dialated 6 hours later! Anyway I went shopping and stopped at Barnes and Noble to renew my membership and see what mags were in. I saw two books, Clouser's Flyfishing for Smallmouth: in Rivers and Streams. The middle pages were dog eared so they ordered it for me, 20% off, plus 10% member discount and free shipping. ;-). They also had J. Z's book of bass flies! Thought Jay Zimmerman name was familiar, you tied one of his flies, right? I'll order that online (cheaper) as soon as they e- or 🐌 snail- mail me more coupons.
I also picked up the winter issue of Flyfishing and Tying Journal. Winter Steelhead issue. Lots of flies, tribute to Alec Jackson, I didn't know he passed away last March.
Well that's all I got. Deer season starts the 18th, I'm overdue for a buck or doe. I saw 2 bucks in my field a couple of mornings ago. Last week one was crossing our road when we turned on it and a bigger one was in the field across from or driveway when we backed in. Maybe I'll have better luck this year... or make my own luck by putting more time in.
Chimo 👋😎 - needed the shades today with my big pupils 🔘🔘 cheers 🍻

+Joe Duca I am on Instagram under PiscatorFlies and I found her account and followed. She has some skills at the vise for certain. I don't think I've ever had a chance to work with the crests of the wood duck so I'm not familiar with their properties and shape. I do like to use the barred and flank feather though.
Take care of those eyes my friend. I'm about due to do the same. Chimo 🍻😎
