Created as a companion video to my series of CARTOON EVOLUTION videos (specifically the one focusing on 'Evolution of THE GRINCH - 63 Years Explained'), I take a look at the vocal evolution of Dr. Seuss's Christmas creation as I compare his official voice actors and live-action portrayals over time, including Boris Karloff, Jim Carrey, Benedict Cumberbatch, Matthew Morrison, Zero Mostel, Hans Conried, Bob Holt, Walter Matthau, Anthony Asbury and Peter Cugno.

My favorite actors performing the Grinch are Boris Karloff from the original 1966 special by Chuck Jones and Jim Carrey from the Live-Action Grinch film.
At times, Jim Carrey's Grinch sounded like he was trying to do a mixed impression of Tim Curry and Sean Connery at the same time.

Hilariously, Tim Curry was a candidate to play that version of The Grinch.
NO ONE can possibly beat Boris Karloff! He "made" the show, as far as I am concerned. I don't think the character would have had a life beyond that one special without his brilliance.
Boris Karloff and Hans Conried are my picks. That last line of Conried's in this video is pretty spooky.
Walter Matthau, also known as Mr. Wilson from the film adaptation of Dennis the Menace!? WHOA!!
I love how each actors gave their own spin on my beloved Grinch, all voices were so perfect and fitting for some reason despite how different from each one they are

Boris Jim Hans Walter and Bob are my personal favorites. Bob was probably the closest to matching Boris' take on the character.
That Walter Matthau one is a DEEP dive. I remember seeing that Random House Storybook VHS in some store for years and it just mystifying me. Like, why would you rent that instead of the original cartoon unless it was already checked out. I think there was an audiobook version of it, but I distinctly remember that storytime video. I will say that I was kind of disappointed that they didn't have Benedict just do his natural British accent for the character. I guess they were trying for more vulnerable than threatening. Boris and Jim's were both very menacing. Jim's coming off as a dangerously unbalanced character. I guess they wanted something different. Though, Benedict's character from the Penguins of Madagascar movie used his natural speaking voice and it worked rather well.
He was trying too hard to change his voice it seems. His regular voice would have worked great.
I agree. Benedict has a lot of sardonic, slightly egotistical roles from Sherlock to Dr. Strange and a slightly cartoony version of that would have worked fine. Giving him a nasally American no-accent accent was a strange choice. Plus, it would have been more similar to Boris Karloff's slight accent and voice. And on that subject, the Walter Matthau delivery is strange as well. Anyone who's a fan of the movie version of The Odd Couple, the Grumpy Old Men movies, or even the first Dennis the Menace film, knows that Walter can do grouchy and grumpy perfectly as is. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of the recording session for Zero Mostel, however. That's a bombastic performance that pretty much rivals Jim Carrey's. And Jim's basically being himself impersonating the cartoon version. Oh, I cannot wait for Sonic the movie 2.

I had no idea that Hans Conried was one of the voices of the Grinch
(Especially considering he’s known as Captain Hook from Peter Pan)
Hans also did the voice and reference model for King Stefan in Sleeping Beauty (though the voice role was taken by Taylor Holmes).
Walter Matthau was such an awesome actor! RIP to him.
Nothing beats Boris Karloff. ❤️Actually, I'd never really realized until now that (because of Boris Karloff) the Grinch doesn't sound quite right to me if he doesn't have an English accent. Weirdly, the only other actor that seemed to take the Grinch's original accent into account was Bob Holt (who was an American in real-life). Ironic, considering that Benedict Cumberbatch has a natural English accent, yet performed the Grinch with an American one. 😆
I vaguely recall (from around 1992) having this video tape with a narrated "motion comic" (which is the best way to describe it) of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and about a couple other Seuss tales. I'm not surprised that one wasn't on here, though.
If I’m remembering right, the Walter Matthau version WAS that one! My parents and I had a copy of that when I was small. I think the other story on the cassette was “If I Ran the Zoo.”
Maybe, but I also vaguely recall 'The Cat in the Hat Comes Back' was included, too.
I also remember loaning it to my second grade teacher for our class to watch and never getting it back.
Peter Cugno didn't need to put his own unique spin in the Grinch movie game, but wow if he didn't do it anyway.
Zero Mostel's interpretation is a little scary.
Walter Matthau, on the other hand is appropriately grumpy.

I think the general rule of thumb with the Grinch as to always be mean and nasty, with a small bit of sincerity that you regret to acknowledge. The grinchmas always be spiteful, gets concerned about those around him but hides it with low-key hostility! With that said, every voice actor has added something Fantastic and AWFUL to the Grinchs personality befitting him!
