Showing how everyone just immediately moves from the event is so true. The man went through all this and nothing is going to change about the company and everyone turns their eyes away as if nothing had happened.
TJM the Great yeah i means what else are we suppose to do? Laid down and die with him? Stop leaving because something happen to someone you don’t even know? People die everyday.. that’s how it is, but if we were that sensitive about every death in the world no one would be able to get out of the bed in the morning, we move on
Obviously it’s terrible for the guy but what are people supposed to do? A ton of people die every day, it’s not realistic to change our whole lives every time someone dies
I understand where Jaden was coming from at the end. He heard his story and felt for him in some way and didn't want him to kill himself. By going for the gun he was trying to save him from himself.
I really loved the ending of this episode!! I found it a bit more ambiguous as we don’t really know whether Chris or Jaden died from the shot. But if we did know it wouldn’t be as impactful because we would just move on with our lives and forget it ever happened, just like the people that got the notifications and Billy Bauer when he went back to meditating. But the thing that makes the audience interested is the curiosity. I think the point was that we have become disengaged from horrific events that they become old news within seconds. But I guess it’s up to interpretation. Loved your reaction!
Agreed, everyone just checked their Smithereen notification final update on Chris' hostage situation, reacted in 5 seconds, and went right back to their day as the next Smithereen "news or distraction" cycle gets on deck to be insta-digested and forgotten.
it's also a take on privacy policy with the comparison between persona, who don't let anyone into someone's account no matter what the situation is, and smithereens, who invade chris's account and all his other social media without pausing and make it seem effortless
the ending was perfect. if he killed himself then you'd complain that it's too predictable, if nobody died then you'd say it's anticlimactic, if there was no gunshot at all then you'd say it was TOO ambiguous. if it was all just a simulation in a police training scheme then you'd say where did that come from?? lol
It’s kinda like how social media apps work. You scroll and scroll and scroll down without any emotion or care about the things you’re scrolling. They are engagingly for a sec but then you move your eyes away. Similarly in this episode people were devoted to save that man and catch the man with the gun but after all this ended everyone either closed their eyes and moved them away.
@@echtautuus09 okay thanks i was just curious he was great in this episode they all were i don't agree with Greg on the ending i thought it was a great way to end to leave it up to interpretation!
I think the big takeaway from the ending is that no matter what the outcome of that shot was, it just boils down to a notification on millions of stranger’s phones. The ambiguity worked for me.
While Striking Vipers is probably this seasons San Junipero, I really dug Smithereens alot. Simple yet very relatable tech commentary BM episode that was still filled with that BM tension. Good performances as well (loved the grieving mother subplot that came back strong). And I dug the ending, 100% agree with Dany ynad comments on the ending below...
One of the best PSA's ever made for not texting/surfing on your phone and driving. Andrew Scott's acting was even better than his playing Moriarty on the BBC'S SHERLOCK, and that's saying a lot...
I respectfully disagree with Alba on the struggling with the gun. When I watched the episode, I put myself in place of the Intern. Chris said he was going to kill himself. It's only normal you talk him out of it. Especially right after his emotional vulnerability. The Intern had two options after failing to talk him out of suicide. Walk out and feel that you just let a man kill himself or try something yourself. The episode itself felt like it was expressing anti-suicide sentiments. The episode itself wasn't about suicide, but as mentioned, suicide permeated the episode. It would have messed up "the message" the show was trying to portray. The police just sniping him after letting the intern go doesn't make sense. So the only option narrative wise was Jaden talking Chris out of it. And Chris goes out hands up and surrenders or the struggle for the gun. The narrative portrays Chris unconsolable and made up his mind so the narratively, the struggle was the only option. Jaden being "too hasty" or aggressive makes sense too. He was young, and he's shown stupid and not thinking tendencies like the time he tried to escape under the bridge.
Actually it's 2018. Recent past. There were three other episodes not based in the future. The National Anthem, Shut Up and Dance, and White Bear. You could also argue The Waldo Moment is modern as well.
The reason why Jaden went for the gun at the end because he felt sympathy for Chris and didn't want to him to commit suicide. You guys said it yourself that he tried to relate to Chris by saying his uncle killed himself
Yeah, but after being put in a hostage situation and being a victim of something which literally has anything to do with you, risking your life is a stretch, if he had come out and tried to make them not shoot him or something, that would have made more sense, but risking his life?
@@kddavvis5943 yea, but chris was real desperate to kill himself. Going outside to tell the cops not to shoot him would've taken too much time and eventually Chris would've shot himself anyway. At least in this ending he died of murder and not suicide
It all did not really matter, it was in the end, just a notification. We glance at it once and move on. Who really died does not matter, because if this was real, we would not too.
M. N. Apathy is the reason gun violence is an issue in the US. Mental health and gun violence are not taken seriously. Always goes back to “he would’ve killed himself anyways” or “guns don’t kill people, people do” or “what about the law abiding citizens”. Progress is brought to a standstill and the result is that everyday people commit suicide and almost everyday a mass shooting will happen somewhere in the US (other places as well, but no where near as frequent). As that happens, we just receive notifications on our phone, maybe make a comment about it, and then nothing. Where as if more people displayed some level of productive empathy like you said change could come about, those numbers could fall, and lives could be saved. Rn all we have are thoughts and prayers...
the ending was the whole point actually, Jaden ended up empathizing with him from his own close experience with suicide. And Bill (Thopher) closing his eyes again at the end like, well okay, another little thing, back to the regular schedule, like the media does today.
This was probably the only episode I really liked from this season. I like the ending how this was the most important day of these two guys’ lives, but for everyone else it’s just another notification. I get why Jaden tried to stop him. Hell, I’d probably try to stop him from killing himself too but I wouldn’t grab the gun.
SMITHEREENS: Superb stuff. Made even more powerful by Andrew Scott's performance. Like all BM tales It's highlighted a modern problem. One that annoys most of us but often we can all be as guilty of this total reliance on our devices. Heads down. Not looking up. Not talking to others (unless it's through the very same devices...). Becoming insular and robotic. Causing a danger to oneself and others. I'm not saying dump the devices but we need to realise we had a perfectly good world before their arrival. We spoke to each other. Kept our thoughts to ourselves. We only shared photos with our loved ones. We didn't rattle on endlessly to total strangers about our day to day lives, and we certainly didn't give away anything personal. Let's keep our wonderful devices but use them sparingly. And take time to look around our great blue world with our own eyes...
I think what Greg is getting at is that there just wasn’t a twist. It was a very simple episode but that’s what I like about crime/drama things when they’re done well. They shock you but the story remains simple and justified, like Pulp Fiction or Pineapple Express
About the end of the Episode, both chraters died when the man tried to shoot at the kidnapper that was on the frontseat of the car, trying to kill himself, but the victim doesn't let him do this, causing all that situation. And about the mother, she got the right password of the site that her daughter used to see, discovering a lot of secrets that her daughter keeps on it.
Yeah, I loved this episode too. Wish they could make another part that sort of focuses in on the mom and her discovering why her daughter killed herself.
I liked how the British police were WAY behind the US tech company when finding out information about this UK citizen who had got his data harvested while he was on "Smithereens" [aka Facebook]
I think there is some good symbolism with Jaden reaching for the gun. It's flipping the hostage situation on its head. Whereas throughout the episode, the hostage situation is the guy with the gun vs the intern, it switches to the hostage situation being the social media company to everyone. It's grade-a commentary.
The end shows how differently the tech leaders treat their products than we do. At the end, everyone gets back to their lives: he meditates, everyone else is glued to their phones. In the real world this is true too: many tech leaders minimise their own and their families' use of the technologies they develop.
I think we should have learned about Jayden's background earlier in the episode because his compassion and the explanation about his uncle killing himself came out of nowhere and was too convenient to explain his sudden reaction. But if we had learned about his uncle earlier in the episode the foreshadowing would have been too predictable. So I'm mixed about this choice.
Charlie brooker wants the viewer to see the end think what the fuck happened then reach for there phones to check Twitter and find out what the ending meant then think the irony of me reaching for my phone and checking social media after what the episode was about 😂
“Can they do that?” There’s an episode of “Monk” dedicated to a company’s phone operator being able to listen to the other end of the line, while the client can only hear hold music. When you hear the words “this phone call may be recorded” (and any variation of that phrase), know that it means EVERY part of the phone call...including when you’re on hold.
Even when the agent presses the mute button which happens quite often to clear their throar or sneeze etc it is all recorded. As a customer you can request what is called a Subject Access Request and the company has to make a copy of each and every phone interaction you have has with the company and write it down to send to them. This includes things said during hold and mute and can even pick up other agents talking in the background. This is why swearing and inappropriate conversations are not tolerated as by law anything heard on the recording must be written down. Just a word of caution for anybody that thinks its funny to mock customers while they have them muted.
The funny thing is that as soon as you guys got into the commentary, I started simultaneously scrolling Facebook. Good review! I might watch the next episode since I don't feel existential dread after this episode.
I felt like this episode showed more of the present than the future whilst Striking Vipers really went into what kind of strange relationships people will eventually come around. Episode 3 is definitely my least favourite
I think they killed him like that at the end to try to make the public from within the episode see him as a bad guy even though he is a troubled victim. That situation can be twisted by the media.
I also thought it was similar to shut up and dance, and how its inverted, but in order to make the flip better, they shouldn't have made him nice at all, as soon as he showed sympathy to jaden, you can see he was a nice guy who was obviously messed up.
