- Playing the Waldorf Blofeld through a 15 second delay, to create a constantly evolving sound-on-sound mosaic; this is a technique popularized by Brian Eno and Robert Fripp in the 70s and is the sonic equivalent to an artist continuously layering paint on a canvas.
Hope these ambient vibes can help instill a sense of calm during these uncertain times.
For this piece I'm using Soundtoys Echoboy set to the Memory Man algorithm. I've cranked the saturation about halfway on the delay leading to warm, smeared repeats and I've also used a generous amount of filter drive on the Blofeld itself (tube algorithm). Lastly, I've overdriven the inputs slightly on my audio interface, adding an extra layer of warmth and grit. The patch has a random LFO modulating the pitch of both oscillators, and the oscillators themselves are detuned, adding to the 'tape warble' effect. Apart from that, the patch is fairly simple, just two sawtooth oscillators and a 24db LPF set about about halfway with a bit of resonance. A tiny bit of attack and release on the envelopes. At some point I increase the attack considerably to turn the patch into a pad swell, and later I introduce some pink noise to emulate wind.
I've uploaded the sysex of the patch and you are welcome to download and use it. Link in the comments.

A few of you have asked about the patch, it's a fairly simple sawtooth lead that I programmed myself with a random LFO modulating the pitch. I've uploaded the sysex so you're welcome to use it. Link here drive.google.com/open?id=1SzOuH2zsrah9xWQjXNKHbCFASsAkDnab
Beautifully played. I admire particularly the way you catch how Fripp's loops seemed to randomise and pop up in surprising places.
As a survivor from the pre digital era, I find the fashion or is it nostalgia for distortion and other faults created by analogue systems quite bewildering and although I am sure there was a measure of distortion in the original tape loop experiments, Fripp is an obsessive and certainly wouldn't permit such levels as shown here.,,😅
Best thing ever is the slow mod on the pitch great on delays, reverbs.. Everything that is slow. Picking up the desktop version of this. Clouds
Great thing about the Blofeld is you can direct slow mod to pretty much everything with the mod matrix!
Wonderful and inspiring. Thank you. And thanks for the patch notes. Can't wait to get on blofeld and try this.
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it!
I super enjoyed that, thank you. I'm so glad I bought one of these, easily the most bang for my buck synth I own.
Cheers! Yeah it's honestly amazing for the price.
I'm glad you bought one as well. Great choice
Really relaxing. Thanks for that.
Thanks for the comment, glad you liked it! I plan to upload more ambient videos in the coming weeks :)
Beautiful stuff, thoroughly enjoyed this. In the right hands the Blofeld sounds totally amazing !
Thanks a lot! I agree the Blofeld is one of my favourites.
This is pure bliss! Love it.
Thanks!
Great!
Wonderful work. I let my Blofeld hear the track....it did not respond but I'm sure it will respond later😂😂😂😂😂. Stay safe!!!!
Haha give it time :)
Smart and spot on!
thanks :)
Hello Ascetic. Good job. Very inspiring! One question: how unpleasant is editing sounds in Blofeld? Much people say that much. From what I hear in the demos, I like its sound a lot more than the Argon8 and the Hydrasynth, but everyone says it workflow is tricky. Is it worth buying a Blofeld in 2020 or do I opt for the friendly edition of the Argon? What do you think about?
Ricard Regàs I find editing the Blofeld is a breeze as the matrix is really intuitive and there’s a large screen with visual feedback for everything you’re tweaking. That said a lot of people seem to hate editing it so I’m not sure how you will find it. I think it sounds better than the Argon and Hydra personally.
@@ascetik Thanks very much! It's from 2008, but it's an incredible instrument!
Wow, great patch design. Totally stealing this. You doing anything ITB aside from the echoboy?
Feel free to use the patch! I'm also using Soundtoys Little Plate reverb, nothing else happening ITB :) If I were to do this completely with hardware I'd use my Boss DD500 for delay and Earthquaker Devices Ghost Echo for reverb, but my pedalboard is hooked up to my guitar set up and I cbf swapping it back and forth all the time.
On the description: What do you mean when you say that you have OVERDRIVEN the imputs on your interface??? Is that like a technique to create the distortion? Overdriving the imputs means to play in the red light levels of a mixer????
Yes exactly, I turned the gain up on the inputs until the lights went red to make the signal hotter.
Really good! Wow!
You designed this patch by yourself ?
I'd even like to see the bg visualisation a little bit more. No offence - it's nice that you recorded playing the keyboard but the visuals fits perfect :)
Thanks! Yeah I designed the patch, if you have a Blofeld I can send it to you. I couldn't decide how much of the visuals to show versus the playing, I'll show more of the visuals next time! Thanks for the feedback :)
ascetik I spent the better part of an hour trying to reverse engineer that patch. It’s a beautiful sound and I would appreciate it if you could send it to me.
@@ascetik yeah i'd love to get this patch on my devices. Thanks in advance!
@@stevenspencer7857 I've uploaded the patch, check the pinned comment for the link :)
what 15sec delay plug in did you use? It sounds really nice :) thanks
pepeflores2003 I used Soundtoys echo boy set to the memory man algorithm, it’s my favourite delay!
You can easily do this with valhalla delay or vintage verb, I love echoboy (all plugs from Soundtoys), but for ambient valhalla plugins sounds the best in my opinion.
Very good ambient track
i'm interested by your presets , i have the desktop version if it's compatible
thanks
Thanks :) The preset is compatible with the desktop version, I've uploaded it to Google Drive, check the pinned comment for the link.
@@ascetik Thanks a lot!
Hey what is the rate of the LFO modulating pitch? thanks
Can't remember the exact rate, but it's slow. Best to tweak by ear. Or you can download the patch, link is in the pinned comments.
What DDL allows a 15 second delay?
I use Soundtoys echoboy
Excellent! What sounds did you use?
vanzea thanks :) it’s a custom patch
