    This '69 Charger Daytona in the Brothers Collection is one of 502 built, and 1 of 294 with the 440 engine. With its aerodynamic nose piece and towering rear wing, this is definitely the most outlandish design from the muscle car era. But those features weren't added to shock and sell, they were shaped to be kings of the NASCAR Super Speedways. In this episode of Muscle Car Of The Week, we'll tell you all about it

    The 69 Charger Daytona had a more luxurious interior compared to the bare-bones interior of the 70 Roadrunner Superbirds !

      Good thing about the Superbird though is that the 440 6BBL was an engine option...along with the standard 440 4bbl and optional Hemi. The Daytona came standard with the 440 4bbl with the Hemi as the only option. Id rather have a regular 69 Charger R/T or 70 Roadrunner

    Dodge had to build a minimum of 500 street-going versions of the Daytona to sell to the public to qualify the design for NASCAR racing.

    • @williamboardman9476
      @williamboardman9476 8 лет назад +1

      +FloridaCoastalGuy That was NASCAR given RULE...but never hit that number for 500 or DAYTONA required. Mercury parked al red and blue ROOF aero cars in one lot...NASCAR glanced and did math on rows. Inner cars were standard "W" nose Cyclones, with blue or red ROOFS. Homologation numbers changed each season, per CLASS cars produced to compete in. USAC, ARCA....BUSCH, Cup. BOSS 429 engine never met numbers either, even after TWO seasons '69 AND '70.

    A harmony of show and GO! Old MOPARS restored are few and far between, and get the big bucks, crazy money. Did anyone see the HEMI CUDA on one of the auto auctions go over $2million?!? MOPAR has comeback andfrom the dead in the 80's to its past glory and in my opinion has THE line-up of some of the strongest, best looking late model muscle on the road today. The cars I'm personally refurring to is the 2006 Dodge Charger R/T 5.7 HEMI, the 2013 Dodge Charger R/T MAX 5.7 HEMI, lastly the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT 392. AMERICAN MUSCLE RULES!!!

    really when you think of it, now the supercar standard is that it hoes 200mph, so technically since the charger daytona was able to get to 200mph its a supercar

    The height of the rear wing also allowed air to travel through it to stabilize the rear end at higher speeds.

      @williamboardman9476 8 лет назад +1

      +Chris Pappas ... Bud was Chrysler Aero / Hemi R+D RACING....Hoover handled STREET Hemi deal. Raymond Fox. (Books out there.) Wing was simply F-15, F-16, F-14 VERTICAL Stabilizers, connected up top. Later after proving wrecks dangerous to stands....teams had to CABLE through parts, under fuel cell to secure. (Added rear weight, no ne complained, especially fans in stands.) WAS adjustable...I could adjust to speed and tip mirrors to watch tires go deep...adjust till speed allowed pressure, NOT flattening.LOOKS great with bikini tracks, and dripping ice water from wet-T contests on top. We did what we could.

    Also the height of the wing was tall so you could open the trunk,and went thru the rear quarter panels down to the frame.

  • @tomnekuda3818
    @tomnekuda3818 5 лет назад

    I was lucky enough to hear Richard Petty speak of his experiences with the SuperBird in NASCAR and he related how the upright portion of the wing really helped to keep the car going straight. He said it was nearly impossible to 'lose it' because the wing would snap the car straight. I would guess that more engineering went into the height/shape of the wing that meets the eye. Too bad they got banned the next year. I wonder how much better the drag coefficient is on the new cars.....I don't mean the NASCAR race cars(which have nearly nothing in common with production cars) but the cars we buy.

  • @zwild1160

    Awesome cars an a part of NASCAR history. They were still legal for racing in 1971. But were limited to engine displacement of 305 C.I. or they had to carry more weight with the larger engine displacements effectively making them un competitive . Petty wanted a winged car and Plymouth initially pushed back but caved in when the King switched to Ford. Due to NASACR changing rules they were suppose to build 1 car for every 2 manufacturer dealer which came out to 1920 cars. It was a wild time in NASCAR history.

    16 years ago i was in Yakima WA, there were two of these daytonas in this run down house, guy sitting on the porch i got out to go check them out.. before i got to shake the mans hand he pulled out a wad of cash and just said i could not afford one.. guy was rather rude, but i guess he got tired of collectors trying to buy it i dunno.. i just wanted to ask the guy about the history etc.. o well, hopefully he did sell them and someone is enjoying them instead of just sitting in his drive way rusting away. only daytona story i have. i ddi get to sit in a early 50s vet.. i was 15 at my job told t o go get something in the barn and there she was in red rag top i jumped in and it had a short throw shifter when you sat in the seat it sucked you in, and it felt like a glove.. what a cool car that was :)

    The difference of the Daytona then a standard Charger is of course the nose cone and wing but the back window is flush like the Charger 500's and the Standard Chargers had a tucked in kind of back window

      +79tazman Saw two Vega drag cars on trailers yesterday. Going back to ask for old HATCHBACK glass BUBBLES (now LEXAN)...as can fit between rails /sails of Standard Charger roof, and vinyl over. Standard curvy Satellite glass is really smooth enough for Superbird, and I've done a few for people who paint Petty blue...BLEND at major shows in ROWS of Supers.Not many notice trunk lid opens past wing, no less lack of vinyl top, or glass.

    375 hp at 4600 rpm, yet it has an 8000 rpm tach? Sure, the OEM's sandbagged occasionally by measuring horsepower at a low rpm, but how fast could these 440's or 426 Hemis turn without blowing up? AFAIK, the 426 kept making power forever.

      It was made in 1969. the Superbird was made in 1970. The only reason was Richard Petty drove for Plymouth and not Dodge. He wanted one in 1969...they said no...he went and raced for Ford. so Plymouth quickly built one for him in 1970. each was a one year only car.

    I wish these videos would actually give the stats of these cars to end the nonsense myths.......and this information is direct from the nascar stats of 1969 and 1970......the daytona was dismall racing failure with only 6 wins, the superbird was not much better with only 8, same as the mercury cyclone spoiler with 8.......the dodge charger 500 actually did much better with 22 wins but the king of the aerocars was the Ford Talledega torino with 29 wins.......especially when you consider that ford pulled out altogether after the 1969 season and David Pearson only ran 19 races in 1970.
