Thats 20k in today's money. Then put in insurance. Housing and upkeep cost for the car from 74-22(50ish years). Yeah thats a nightmare barely worth 1.2mil to me.

When I was in high school, I remember a 70 Super Bird in yellow with a deep black vinyl top. Gorgeous car. Looked brand new even though it was 13 years old. Someone decided to hop on top of the wing and sat in the middle of it. Didn't break or bow. Now that's made in the USA!

i have seen many a pic of 3 adult men sitting or standing on the wing. they're not only extremely strong, they were anchored all the way through the trunk compartment to the subframes..how many wings on Ricers can say that? There was even a steel cable run through them (can't recall if was for the racers only, or for all the production cars to..in the event of a crash), if the
wing did become separated it wouldn't fly up into the stands.
Final assembly at East 10 Mile Road and Brittany Avenue. Watched them load a a carrier full of Hemi and 440 Daytona Chargers in August 1969. Small crowd watched as the one hemi fired up. The cigar-chomping truck driver was straight out of central casting. Seeing the dozens of Daytonas lined up in the small parking area was breathtaking; oh, to have had a camera... Maybe this one was there, but don't remember that paint colour...
Was that the location of "Creative Industries" in Detroit?

looks like F8 green, a fabulous color that was brought back for the new crop of Chargers & Challengers.

My dad had a 70 Bird. I remember the day he traded it for a 69 Charger 440 Magnum, a 70 Coronet RT convertible with a 383, and $5k cash. That was 45 years ago.
l am in my 80's an l had one of these when they new....lt was a straight line car...Thanks
People laughed at them back then, mostly didn't they? Did you sell yours before or after they became collectable? Most didn't have a clue they would ever be worth anything back in the day and sold them for a grand or two if that. Did your dealer have a hard time selling it, and did that help you get a good deal on it? How did you use the car? Just drove it around as a normal daily driver, right or did you appreciate it and understand it's significance, even back then and baby it?

The only reason why a 1969 Charger was converted to what you see is because the objective was to hit 200 MPH on the NASCAR circuit and also the Charger 500 was only hitting low 180's using the 426 race HEMI. Aerodynamics play a BIG part when you're up at those speeds. 18" nose was adapted and a 23" back wing too and air dams. The rear window on the regular Charger's was made flush with the body. Buddy Baker hit 200.096 average MPH in the Daytona at NASCAR back in 1970(03/24/70). Dodge and Plymouth had to do something to compete effectively with Ford. Racing back then was HUGE and Mopar and Ford just hated each other out on the racetrack. So Bill France said, "you want to race here? 500 units produced for the public and you can race your stock car at NASCAR." Plymouth had to build their '70 Roadrunner into the 1970 Super Bird in order to race in 1970. 1 car for every 2 dealerships. Thus, 1935 SB's were built to satisfy the "godfather of NASCAR."--Bill France
FYI-505 Daytona's built at "Creative Industries" in Detroit. They were modified Charger 500's. In 73 days they were all built and ready to go. Summer of '69. Original list price for a 1969 Dodge Daytona--- $3,860.00
There's NO 1970 Daytona nor 1971 Super Birds. "1 year wonders." And that is Mopar history for you. Thanks 4 reading.

The company I worked for had an office one floor down from the Chrysler district sales office, and one day a week they had a sales meeting with all their dealer reps. At the time, the Superbirds and Daytonas were selling slowly, so all the reps were given one as their company car. I would come to work and there would be a parking lot row of these cars to look at. What a spectacular view it was. I guess I should have just stopped up at their office and made an offer to buy one, but my eyes were bigger than my wallet in those days. Hindsight is always 20/20.

In 1969 one of these monsters sat on a Dodge dealer's lot near my apartment and virtually rotted in the sun. It may have still been on the lot when I moved from the area in 1971.
I remember seeing these going for ~$250k not too entirely long ago and my friends laughedat how much I wished I could own one, saying how ludicrous itvwas for a "car like that" to be that expensive... It's insane how much they've skyrocketed in the last 5-10 years or so. Just wow.

Great old times indeed. When I were a wee tyke of 17 years in 1970 my Dad gave me his '66 Olds Dynamic 88 425 convertible with variable "switch" pitch stator blades in the torque converter. Wow, that car was fast off a standing start. It put down vast amounts of rubber and the tires smoked up seemingly forever. At one point a few years later I owned a '66 289 Sunbeam Tiger that would chirp in all four gears but I have never lost my affection for that '66 Olds. A good one is only $16,000 vs. the $1.2 million sale price for the Daytona. If one would like a piece of 1960's nostalgia but can't afford the million dollar super cars there is always a great selection of GM, Chrysler and Fords available that are fast and look great.
I used to see these cars on the road when I was a young boy and I would dream about owning one but not at that price.
Where did you live? Only 503 were made and many used in NASCAR

I just saw a Plymouth Superbird going down Barbour Blvd, In Portland Oregon, an hour ago, thinking, there's a million dollar car. It was STP blue, with number 43 on the side.

Only winged Mopar I ever saw on the road was a Superbird in Norfolk, VA when I was stationed there 1969-71.
Yes they sat on the lots forever. My cousin has a yellow Superbird. Have never seen a Daytona except in car museums. Those were the days. Chrysler Corp. made the hottest muscle cars IMHO.

I think the look of the Dayton and Superbird from the front was the real turn-off, The rear spoiler was actually a beauty. In the 1980s I've seen rear spoilers dam near this size on Corvettes and supped-up Honda Accords but yeah, They didn't catch-on with average auto consumers and a lot of hi-per enthusiasts just couldn't afford them [if that makes sense] !

I had the 1969 Daytona dodge brand new, hemi off the show room in Marion Ohio in 1969. Had it for two years, and sold it for my purchase price of about $4,500. I have the title and photos to show.
Did you realize at the time that it was just 1 of 22 built? What Dodge dealership? With the HEMI under the hood, the car would've been close to $5000. Tax, etc. it would've topped 5 g's in 1969. With 440 under hood, it was about 4 g's.
I remember that dealership. Dad always did business with the dealership in Delaware because he thought those guys were crooks.

In 1975 I was a junior in high school and bought my first car, a 1969 Dodge Charger. 383 Magnum, automatic on the center console. Nice looking car with 57,000 miles. White with a dark green vinyl roof. Dark green interior. Paid $1,200. I owned it for a year and a half and sold it for $1,000. I then bought a 1967 Chevelle Malibu for $ 700.00.

In the late 90s, there was a NOS plastic DDC nosepiece in the orig. wood crating down here in S. Florida. I bought a bunch of stuff from the owner's warehouse sale but lost out on the nosepiece when someone gave him $100.00 more. I think it was only $1200.00, or $1300.00. Stupid me.
Mopar had so many great stock colors - I had a 1970 Charger 500 - Plum Crazy - Purple! My favorite was the chartreuse - Awesome!
I never owned a "winged" supercar, but I had several "classics" in my youth. A '61 T-Bird Convertible w/slideaway steering wheel, '67 Corvair Spyder, '66 Mustang and several others that would be worth big bucks today if they were restored. My buddies and brothers had Cuda's, SS 396 Chevelle's, Z-28's, '56 & '57 Chevy's, an early Mach I Mustang and lots of Mopar muscle. Strangely though, no one wanted a Corvette. I looked into buying one only to find out that the insurance payments would've been more than the car payments! We "kids" back then weren't interested in imports, we wanted "American Muscle!"
Last year for the Spyder was 1964. They were dubbed Corsa from 1965 on.
I remember a row of these brand new at the Dodge dealer near my house in Northglenn Co when I was 9 yrs old. If only we knew!!

MOPAR ruled the 60's and 70's, this Daytona at $1.2MILLION, they were capable of speeds of 220mph or more and nothing could touch the Daytona or the Plymouth Superbird on the track or the street. Then there was a HEMI Cuda from 1970 or 1971, I'm not sure what year but what I do know is it was sold for $3.5MILLION. Incredible pieces of automotive art that look as good now as they did in those days, the most explosive, greatest muscle car periods like it is/was now. No matter the economy or gas prices there's folks that love to hit the gas and scream down the road. There's nothing like the sound of a HEMI at full throttle, or Chevy 454 or the Ford BOSS 429.

@@dustinwarner6594 Jay Leno drives his classic cars. Many collectors have drivers too. I went to a going away party for a serious collector with 14 classic Mopars in his garage. Still has original 1969 Dodge Charger that was his first car.

I had a 69 R/T Dodge charger same color /black vinyl top 440 Magnum 4 speed 3.23 track pack tic tac clock Magnum 500 Wheels I had it for 8 months before it was hit by a drunk driver it had correct wiring harness everything on the car was original it had 70,000 miles I bought it in 1981 for $800 I kept the original broadcast sheet that was behind the back seat in the center of the upper seat in a sealed bag. The only thing that didn't work on the car was the fuel gauge and I hadn't quite got to fixing that yet I had installed headers and a holly double pumper. I ran out of gas in a rainstorm I ran 5 miles ran into my mom's bedroom grab the keys out of her purse and roasted them like starsky and hutch I got back to the crash site unknown to me it had been hit by a drunk driver I slid my mom's old Cutlass sideways with the door open and had one leg out ran up to the car and started beating on the passed out drunk drivers window I could have sued him but I chose not to because they were poor.

One of me droogs from my high school days (class of '71) has one of those his father bought new. About 30,000 miles, all original. Me droog has about 30 other cars from the era, all stock. They live on his farm in a gigantic garage he built.

Holy .... It's unbelievable when you think this car was worth probably about 5 or 6000 back in 69. Looovvvee the color. Wicked. 😲😘 When I see these I'm always remember the cook from the pizza shop I used to go to in the late 80's that had, well, not a Daytona, but the rusted out Superbird he used to always park out front.
They couldn't even sell them in 69. Check it out.

i remember seeing one driving on the streets in 1974..it was so wild looking ..i am thinking it was orange.
I wanted one so bad when I was a kid in about 1981. There were 2 setting in a junkyard in KCMO. My dad thought they were the dumbest looking cars ever although he did take me to the yard to look at those 2 cars. They were 440 cars and the owner of the junkyard wouldn't even talk about selling them. He was happy to let us drool over them though. Today that yard is a Pick and Pull and both of the Daytonas were sold sometime in the late 80's/early 90's. Amazing had anyone known what they would become back then.

I actually saw a Dodge Daytona on Broad Street in Richmond, Virginia one time. The only Daytona I've ever seen on the road. Must have been about '70 or '71. Superbirds were plentiful compared to Daytona's.

I remember during the first fake gas shortage of 73' one of these sitting in a used car lot for months. You could not give away a muscle car in those days of 55mph national speed limits.
While I didn't own a Daytona but I bought a 69 Coronet RT with 440 black vinyl top with Plum exterior black interior don't know if it's exactly true I've tried to look it up but only 300 wer made in that combination I give $300 for it in 1980 I so wish I would have kept that car
