    I’ve been taught too water in the hole before you plant trees and bushes, so you help the get roots get established ( and no, they won’t drown😂)
    and you don’t have to water several times a day for the first few weeks.
    I’ve never had a single tree, bush or perennial die when I did that…

AND - they eat grass. ;) And close is ok since you need two hazelnuts within reach of each other in order to grow nuts. Thanks for sharing. We have Hazelnut trees in an old established orchard that was not maintained by the previous owners, we have spent the last 2+ years trying to fix everything (to get good land, at a good price, sometimes you take on big workloads) and I keep eying the Hazels and whispering 'One day'
    We get bucket loads of nuts but it is seriously what the kids call the eldritch grove.

  • @petrosros
    @petrosros 4 месяца назад +2

    Edible Acres is definitely one YT's more eccentric convivial channels, I have been watching and chatting with him for years.
    On the Hazel front, did you know the tree was a staple in the diet of Palaeolithic Britain, we still have middens like small hills of roasted nutshells and their grinding stones, it is thought to have been cooked as flat bread. Cultivated Hazels are called Cob nuts here, and grow bigger because you keep the tree
    small. They taste very different when fresh, but spoil easily when shelled, so should be eaten straight away, or chopped up with a little salt.

    Just a little curious aren't you? to see how a few of the hazelnut trees would do in that hugelkultur area? really excited about this experiment along with the other ones you planted. Ben this is really exciting!! I like to thank G-d for the gift of land & it's growing ability and ask Him, "please guard this plant/tree to grow beautifully for our family" I don't think the plant is independent without His blessing.

    Hazels do really well in the edge of woodland and in open woodland, where the pigs will keep the spares down by rooting them out as a high protein food, so they don't get overcrowded, when they are hidden by squirrels. They survive quite hard frosts and the catkins are out early giving the bees pollen when they need it for building up the colonies again. Great choice of a bargain.

    I missed this somehow! Nice bunch of starts. Nice, planting Hazelnut trees from "Edible Acres" from Shawn. Cool, comfrey planted on each side of the Hazelnut trees. Those are nice bare root trees! Good idea to plant a Hazelnut tree in front of the posts for the bamboo trellis. That should look lovely in the future. Thanks for explaining about the composting on top of the ground for a sapling tree instead of putting it in the hole. I think that is a great idea to pack the regular soil all around the tree too because it supports the small trunk more so it stays up better. Compost all around on top of the cardboard. So great that you have the tractor. Good thing you are marking the little trees with the bamboo, like you say they could get covered in grass. Wow, that mulch on top looks lovely! That's great that Brett and Corbin helped. Nice, selling some guinea hogs! Cool, Jeff a viewer bought 2 piglets. Great! Dinner, beef and rice burritos! Jack just likes to savor his food. He is the baker and cook of the twins. That looked delicious. Thanks for this video Hollar family!
