@@Serttok I'm not going to pretend to be an expert, or anything more than a lapsed Catholic, but from what I can remember the only actual description of hell mentions flames and "gnashing of teeth" and I can't remember if it's canon but I recall somebody mentioned the waste dump outside Jerusalem. By that I mean it's alluded to as an allegory rather than exact coordinates XD About the Lucifer stuff I think he was supposed to be the literal Lord of Hell, as in he had dominion of hell and all those in it. But there's some non canonical bibles that might go into more detail.
@@Serttok even the notion that we have of Satan/the devil/Lucifer is not that consistent and clear throughout the Bible. But the Bible refers to God as "the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell" and says the devil (evil one) and his angels will be thrown into a lake of fire. It's different in the old testament though, where they mostly just refer to sheol, the grave. But yeah, new testament descriptions of "where the bad people go," if you will, are something like, "darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth." (Revelation is another story, and too confusing for me or most people to handle.) At some point, it became popular to think of hell as just being utterly cut off from God. Since God is goodness/ the source of all goodness, this means all you need for hell is to have none of him. Another idea is that there is no hell, that souls that don't spend eternity with God are just annihilated. Probably my favorite definition of hell is the one that says hell is actually just experiencing God's unveiled love, goodness, presence, etc, while knowing that you rejected him in life. That that produces such anguish in you, once you know how great his love is. I kind of like the idea that the revelation (granted understanding) of God's incredible nature is strong enough to make hell out of ultimate goodness, simply because you're a crooked person. Still sucks, though. This is sometimes combined with the idea that people come around eventually, through varying levels of being realigned to love God based on how bent/misaligned with God they were before. When people believe that everyone God ever created will necessarily, eventually be brought to reconciliation with God through this, that's one version of PUR, purgatorial universal reconciliation. It's sort of what I believed right before I stopped believing.

Dante liked the number 9 because he understood how Hebrew numbers work. 3 and 7 are considered to be the perfect numbers in Hebrew, as both consist of a beginning, a middle, and an end. 9 is like a perfect multiple of 3, given that it is three 3s put together, thus having a beginning a middle and an end. That's why Dante used 9. On another note, the number 6 is considered evil, because it doesn't have a middle, but it made up of two 3s or perfect numbers. The reason 666 is used to describe Satan is that it is 3 of these evil numbers put together, thus symbolizing that he is perfect in his evil-ness. Kind of crazy when you get to know what all the numbers represent. Symbolism is a big deal in ancient Judaism and Christianity.

That’s the depiction they used in Being Human (at least the original one, not sure about the American one). Eventually after someone leads you down a long corridor, you’re shown to a slightly different but basically identical waiting room and given another number. Ad infinitum
Strictly speaking, when Dante wrote the DC Italian did not really exist. He wrote the DC using the language spoken in Florence. His work helped establishing Tuscan as the national language of Italy, and it was formally adopted when Italy was unified in 1861.

Not necessarily. He depicted the River Styx more like a giant swamp, to represent how people “stew” in their own anger as it destroys them. One guy tries to get on the ship and Dante beats him off of it, which Virgil approves of
Excommunication is were someone is kicked out of the Church, as a punishment by the church for breach of Church discipline, It does not forbid the excommunicate one form repenting and being saved. the whole We’ve decided that you’re not going to Heaven, and we’ve told God about our decision.” is bad theology and a misunderstanding of what Excommunication is in that it forgets God is Sovereign. The idea that you have posted would require God to go back on so many of his promises that would be totally against God's character so that it would be impossible for that to happen. God has said I will never leave or forsake you, In just about each book of the bible, and Jesus has said "I will never lose any you have given me, but one", and "None can shance any one form my hand." So the weight of the evidence in the bible is this understanding of Excommunication is not correct.
@@Delgen1951 from Wikipedia "In first Christian centuries excommunication was not regarded as a simple external measure; it touched the soul and the conscience. It was not merely the severing of the outward bond which holds individual to their place in the Church; it severed also the internal bond, and the sentence pronounced on earth was understood to be ratified in heaven." So, while not accurate now, it once was accurate. And the fact you can beg and plead to have them ask god to forgive you doesn't change the fact they effectively told god what they decided.
What James Williston said: the description in the video is not how excommunication is supposed to be used, but it was historically abused like this. I have no qualms about kicking unrepentant “Christians” out of the Church, as not doing so sends a message that repentance isn’t important.
Knowing Better, the Lustful are not “Blown over.” The wind actually blows them off of their feet and they “fly” with the wind. Also, the gluttonous don’t eat the slush....Cerberus did. They’re just kinda forced to lay down in the stinky mud while Cerberus claws and nips at them. The first bolgia is for panders and seducers, you got that part right, you just mixed up the punishment. You see, the bolgia are like moats connected by bridges...Dante and Virgil have to go to the midpoint of the bridge to view the punishment. What they see is two files of sinners, one file coming toward them and the other running in the way they’re facing. As they walk, they are being lashed by horned demons (in ancient times, people believed that if you cheated, you grew horns on your head.) As they goaded others in life, they are now being goaded in death. Finally, remember that Lucifer is a perversion, a mockery of all God is. The three faces on one body mimic the Trinity, but are actually the polar opposites of the qualities described on the Gates of Hell (Divine Omnipotence-Extreme Helplessness, Supreme Intelligence-Deepest Ignorance, First Love-Ultimate Hatred.) A few minor things...all the dead in Hell have knowledge of the far future on Earth (one of the gluttons proved this when he gave Dante a prophecy), but they don’t know anything of present time. A soul actually believed his son was dead because of Dante’s confusion about the topic. Medusa did not appear to Dante, but three furies called for her. In the fifth circle, there is another group of sinners under the Styx’s mud, the sullen, or the people who internalized their anger. As they choked on their anger in life, now they choke on the black mud of the Styx. Last two things....what Dante calls “art” is really human industry.. The argument is that humans, by their nature, work for God...all they do is to exalt God. Therefore, their labor is dedicated to God, in a way. However, moneylending is not proper....with moneylending there is no labor involved...thus, it’s sinful. Also, the sinners in the third region of Cocytus aren’t on top of the ice (the poet is clear that the wind freezes things pretty quickly.) Rather, they are lying supine with their faces up. Since they’re eternally weeping, the wind freezes their tears and makes it look like they have crystal visors on. One last thing, the last zone in Hell is not for those traitorous to God specifically, but just traitorous to their lords.
Andrew Ollmann That Last point cleared a lot up for me because I was confused on how Brutus and Cassius betrayed God. When you write it was betrayers to their lords that certainly clears things for me. Thanks

They even tried to leverage it against European colonizers when they began to carve up Africa. Also, they have really cool churches that have been entirely cut from stone.
It's possible Dante didn't recognize them bc they were Orthodox. I mean, his beloved Crusades sacked the Orthodox Christian city of Constantinople, so...
Very good job! The Divine Comedy is the book I studied the most in my life, for over 20 years every day, it is extremely complicated, and it is not easy to find a summary as well done as yours in English. There are some minor imprecisions though, let's name just a few: - Minos circles his tail around himself, not around the soul of the damned, in order to indicate where the convicted has to be incarcerated. - Pier delle Vigne, among suicides, is not a Florentine, he was from Capua (Naples) and was accused of having betrayed Frederick the Second Emperor, probably the most influential political figure of all Middle Ages. - Ulysses is burning together with Diomedes. - In Purgatory, among choleric souls, Dante speaks to the Venetian Marco Lombardo, pretty interesting, and in the sloth terrace to Gherardo II, abbot of San Zeno, who blames the costume of nepotism. - Virgil cannot, but Statius provides the solution to the riddle of how a soul can starve, and it is one of the most delusional and magnificent passages of the whole book. - A deeper respect for the figure of Beatrice is due, I am sorry. Ok, I do not want to be too pedantic. Thank you for the excellent piece.
Well, I am not a professional, by any mean; it is just my hobby. Professionals are called "Dantists", they are philologists and mostly work in Universities; I just want to have fun and I focus only on the topics I am interested in. Of course, after so much time, I accumulated certain knowledge. I know it could appear a nerdy waste of time, but on the other hand, I do not play videogames, for example, and I know nothing about sports. I just happen to like history and old Italian. It is a great book, and it is translated very well in English, give it a try, but I warn you, it is pretty addictive.
Ah, no, no, not at all! I was just giving an explanation because I know that it may sound bizarre. And even if I did not know about that joke on The Onion I considered your comment really funny. I am happy to know you read the entire book, it is old and detached from our way of understanding reality, that's also why accuracy and time are much needed to get somewhere. Dante was a visionary, I still struggle to picture how one man alone could imagine as many things as he did.
@@Palladiosios yes, but when rome conquered north africa they even meet some black african which they called them ifrikkan. Africa name came from irrikkan.
One thing I should point out. Dante did NOT write this book in Italian. At this point, Latin had broken up into differing dialects that were spoken throughout Italy, and the Divine Comedy was written in the Florentine dialect. He did so in order that people in Florence who didn't know Latin could read his work. However, the poem was so popular that it was copied and spread throughout the Italian peninsula and people far from Florence learned this dialect to read this work. When Dante wrote the Divine Comedy, the language he was writing wasn't Italian, but as a result of him, it BECAME Italian. That's why Italians call Dante the "father of the Italian language."

I always get this weird feeling when I hear somebody put "Kalinka" as background music for a video but then remember it's just "The Tetris theme" to most people...
So......this video isn't entirely accurate. I'm sure it's been stated already, but the actual largest influence of what the punishments of hell look like for both us and Dante's work, came from the 2nd century non-canon book called the Apocalypse of Peter. This book is what actually influenced both church doctrines and the divine satire. Not the other way around. Dante mixed Greek mythology with already pre existing Christian concepts.
Takes a long time to fabricate a religion.. Many possible influences, circuitous and interconnected. Oracles (holy men) received messages (revelation) from Yahweh, his son, his ghost, and his Angels... Useful concepts from other religions are expropriated. Adaptations are made to accommodate converted cultures.
Fun fact, a Jewish person a little after Dante made his own version of hell, and in that version Jesus Christ is forever boiling in a vat of shit for falsely claiming to be the Messiah.
Oh! So that story is true huh?! Haha. Good. I watched a Jewish rabbi say that here on YT and I was laughing my ass off upon hearing it. He said it this way: "The founder of Christianity is currently being boiled in feces." 😂😂😂💩

Thank you! I'm glad you are teaching that "Immaculate Conception" isn't the same as the "Virgin Birth". I think that people's confusion over these two dogmas leads to other significant difficulties in understanding by so many people. It's frustrating, since when people are told about this, they sometimes think their faith is being challenged, rather than simply a nuance of dogma being addressed.
Yep. The thing is in Dante's time Mohammed was believed to have been a Christian bishop that at some point became heretic, founding Islam. In the medieval view it wasn't a separate religion, but an heretic offshoot of Christianity. That's why he put him there.
@@m3rl1on If one thinks about it, it sort of makes sense. The centuries before and around the founding of Islam were full of heresies coming from schismatic churches/patriarchs in the Orient (nestorianism, arianism, monophysitism, you name it). Given the general murkiness around those matters, it is not surprising that they thought it was the same deal with Mohammed.
Adam and Eve: Goes against God and brings sin and death to all of humanity and the world, but ends up in Heaven. Satan: Goes against God and only convinced one third of angels to follow him (33%), ends up frozen in the darkest and coldest part of hell.
Well, Adam and Eve didn't know the difference between good and evil before eating the fruit...though that just raises the question of how a being of infinite justice can see it right to punnish a couple of humans with the ethical understanding of infants (along with all of their descendents, who did nothing wrong) for eating something he put right in the middle of what amounts to their playpen. Oh, and need I mention that Yahweh is omniscient, so would have known that they would eat from the tree. The divine comedy still makes more sense ethically than the book is was based on.
@@dynamicworlds1 No, it doesnt raise those questions. Good and Evil are not synonyms for Right and Wrong, and they did know what they did was wrong. And they weren't babies. THe idea that the Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And evil made them have general knowledge is not really supportable. Also, didn't the Early Church, and the Rabbis for that matter, view the whole thing as Allegorical? Origen, who was quiet influential in Medieval Theology, wrote in the 2nd Century AD that this is a shadow of a Spiritual event. The coats of flesh Adam and Eve got from God? Those are the physical bodies we now have. The whole Eden thing was set in a Spirit World we can't really understand now and is set in an allegorical fashion.
The difference, in terms of Classical Christianity like Dante, is Adam repented and Satan did not. Besides, Adam didn't go to Heaven till after the Harrowing Of Hell, so he went to Hell first. With that said, many Christians, and Jews generally, see Satan as less God's adversary, and more as God's prosecuting attorney here to make sure we Truly Love God. Its less that he's Evil and more than tempting us is his job.

Ethiopia knew about Christianity long before most of Europe did. Currently over half is Christian( most Ethiopian Orthodox). From Wikipedia: According to its tradition, the Coptic Church was established by Saint Mark, an apostle and evangelist, during the middle of the 1st century (c. AD 42).
yeah but at that point in time Ethiopia had been almost completely cut off from the rest of the Christian world for nearly 600 years so they had no knowledge of weather or not the people in Ethiopia still knew of Christ at the time and this uncertainty about the status of places like Ethiopia and the Assyrian Church in Iraq but hope of their continued existence ultimately led to the Prestor John legend so the interpretation largely holds (also Europeans tended to refer to all of sub-saharan Africa as Ethiopia including non-Christian and even undiscovered areas so again largely holds)

@@zvidanyatvetski8081 It actually was the Empire of Ethiopia by that point, though Abyssinia was a common exonym. (Aksum/Axum hadn't been used for a long while, since that more properly referred to the Classical era state that was conquered by a different Ethiopian faction in 960 CE.)

I refuse to break the 666 likes.

Excommunication: “We’ve decided that you’re not going to Heaven, and we’ve told God about our decision.”
🧐 Accurate
That's not what excommunication is
Excommunication is were someone is kicked out of the Church, as a punishment by the church for breach of Church discipline, It does not forbid the excommunicate one form repenting and being saved. the whole We’ve decided that you’re not going to Heaven, and we’ve told God about our decision.”
is bad theology and a misunderstanding of what Excommunication is in that it forgets God is Sovereign.
It was not merely the severing of the outward bond which holds individual to their place in the Church; it severed also the internal bond, and the sentence pronounced on earth was understood to be ratified in heaven."
So, while not accurate now, it once was accurate.
The three faces on one body mimic the Trinity, but are actually the polar opposites of the qualities described on the Gates of Hell (Divine Omnipotence-Extreme Helplessness, Supreme Intelligence-Deepest Ignorance, First Love-Ultimate Hatred.)
A few minor things...all the dead in Hell have knowledge of the far future on Earth (one of the gluttons proved this when he gave Dante a prophecy), but they don’t know anything of present time.
Thanks

Very good job! The Divine Comedy is the book I studied the most in my life, for over 20 years every day, it is extremely complicated, and it is not easy to find a summary as well done as yours in English.
There are some minor imprecisions though, let's name just a few:
- Minos circles his tail around himself, not around the soul of the damned, in order to indicate where the convicted has to be incarcerated.

So Dante is the Steve Jobs of religious fan fiction?
He was also influenced by muslim and Iranian traditions
There's so many elements to it it's hard to pin point where everything starts.
A lot of what is thought of as Christian ideology/iconography about heaven, hell, angels, and demons came from (or was influenced by) Zoroastrianism.
Takes a long time to fabricate a religion.. Many possible influences, circuitous and interconnected. Oracles (holy men) received messages (revelation) from Yahweh, his son, his ghost, and his Angels... Useful concepts from other religions are expropriated.

I bet, like most people he regrets some past short temperedness and present ill-patience. Wrath.
I bet he feels he may, or may have in the past, consumed too much alcohol and food.
Anyone who thinks their opinions or research are worth putting on youtube for other people to watch and listen to have some level of pride. I'm sure he's cognizant of that.
Why is everyone with lust?
Because I suspect most people have that one

Thank you, he got a lot of details wrong in this one.
@@mikeyjoe419 Like what?
@@missfashionator For one he says that Mary is the only person to be born without sin, which is untrue because Jesus was also born without sin. He also says that Dante thought the earth was "the center of the universe instead of the Sun" which implies that the Sun is the center of the universe. It's only the center of the solar system, not even the galaxy, let alone the entire universe.
@@mikeyjoe419 Thank you!
Now I can stop nagging myself to read Dante. This was masterful, you laid it all out and it was as if I had a private tutor. Thanks heaps.

Trust me it all sucks and its useless. I use about 10% of what I learned in school in my life and I find only about 40% you learn useful. XD For examply I cant write without typos and serious grammar mistakes, but I know how to pick sentece apart and say what is verb what that verb ties to etc.. or what is aposiopeze in language etc... Of course in my native longuege not english.

21:57 Beatrice is also the reason Dante is going on the journey through the three realms. She was on a mission from the Virgin Mary and St. Lucy she visits Virgil in Limbo to send him to Dante....it’s the entire point of Canto II of the Inferno.
this entire time I was thinking about someone just speedrunning from the circles of hell to the layers of heaven, doing tasks and running through punishments
Your idea is as valid as Dante'a.
"Inferno starts with Dante being lost in the woods, where he gets found by Virgil-"

Been a long time since I read it but Niven and Pournelle wrote a take on Dante with "Inferno". Mussolini is the guide. Pretty funny stuff.
