    This is the same concept we use to drill horizontally underground for the insertion of pipelines. The bevel end goes straight when in full rotation, and direction is controlled by stopping rotation at a certain point along rotation. The hole is drilled, opened up more with a reaming bit, then pipe is pulled through.

      This seems quiet useless to be entirely fair.
      If it were put to any use despite its la k of application, it would probably be as asterilizible or disposable tip to a device that rotates and steers it, would have some very nieche usecase and be completely ridiculously overpriced for its utility.
      It also wont have a work channel in it, as I think that would impact its performance, it would only serve as a guiding wire for a cathether over it.

      Well there is a manga titled Radiation House where they used it too stop a bleeding in the intestines still same thing navigating to the veins but this time the tip is carrying something that would block the damaged veins and stop it from bleeding.
      It’s chapter 45-49 if you are interested.
      Looking at it further seems like this procedure is most common used it stopping aneurysm on the brain I guess that’s why i saw one comment mentioning this is used to travel through the spine so yeah. The one in the manga is not as scary as using it on the brain I guess

      The rotating needle would in theory cause more damage and be more painful, but it’s also probably only going to be used in niche scenarios. Things like basic flu shots and anesthetics wouldn’t require this.
      And since this is designed so it can go around important body parts like organs, it’s probably easier and less damaging than the current alternative, which I’d imagine to be an entire incision or surgery.

    • @greatninja2590
      @greatninja2590 3 года назад +1

      @@electrolyteraccoon214 as I mentioned right now they are mostly now used for stopping internal bleeding if you guys think this is scary wait until you have a potential bleeding on your brain and they’ll use this to enter the veins to your leg and it will go and cross through your spinal cord and go inside your brain and shoot some stuff that would block the bleeding relatively safe if the doctor is an expert better than dying.
      Though the brain example is the most famous one cause like that’s the only option you can use in case of bleeding inside the brain in the previous comment I also mentioned a manga that showed this type of procedure where they used it to stop an internal bleeding inside the guts. If the patient don’t want to have a huge scar and recover months inside the hospital ( and also not lose more blood due to surgery probably the main reason to use this procedure in the first place ) then yeah stopping bleeding using this method is better.

      Well most nurses are students still learning, and they get too nervous when finding veins, some veins are easy to find, to poke through, others harder.
      It doesn’t help that sometimes, patients are also complete uncooperative morons, or they wouldn’t end up in such situations where it lands them in the hospital and don’t want to be there..

    This technique is lifted straight from directional drilling for laying cables etc under rivers and existing infrastructure. Except there they additionally use water jets for cutting... and the "needle" is a steel pipe the size of your forearm.

    Immediately saw the flaw in that kinked needle if there were still plans to rotate it as it went in. Still seems like it could make needles a little painful even without the kink since it’s cutting through more surface area than a standard one.

  • @gyroscope915
    @gyroscope915 3 года назад +4

    Would have been interesting if they actually showed the needle being reliably guideed to a target or avoiding something to show you could actually guide the needle where you wanted it, and it didn't just curve randomly with little control over where it goes

    • @gyroscope915
      @gyroscope915 3 года назад

      @CantOutRunADuck they claim the angle is controlled by spin, which is why I said it would have been good of they actually showed that in practice and showed it being used to avoid something to show how controllable it was.
      I can also just claim something and photoshop together a chart, that's hardly proof of it claims.

    This is the same way they "horizontally" drill for oil. They use a bit with an ~1° - 2° bend (several incremental angles can be purchased, ie 1.5°, 2.4°, ect), and at first they rotate the bit as they drill so it cuts a straight downward hole for a few thousand feet, and then once they've hit their target depth they stop rotating the bit and "slide," they let the weight of the drill bit (and string) and the ~1-2° bend steer & curve the trajectory till the hole is pointing sideways instead of straight down, and then they begin rotating again to drill "horizontally" for another ~10,000ft. They drill straight down to get to the target formation and then they start "building the curve" which is a mixture of "sliding" and rotating so that over time and several hundred feet a rounded right angle curve is created. Once the hole is pointing sideways or the bit is laying horizontally then the curve portion is complete and they can begin rotating to start drilling out the 2nd half of the hole/well. The tighter the curve the more friction and possibility of getting stuck or related issues ("dog legs").
    They go down for a few thousand feet and then they go over for a few thousand feet.
