I thought of the same comparison but didn’t think expat Brits in France would have a clue who Bob Ross was. Like Bob, Simon has a very Zen demeanor that just exudes a calming, chill persona. I love the guy.
In your video a few days ago I was struck by how effectively, calmly, and patiently Simon instructed Yannis on his first try at plastering. A lot of craftsmen or artists may be incredibly skilled but do not have the aptitude for teaching others. Simon is the exception and it translated beautifully on the screen. The more he appears in your videos the more apparent it has become that he has a natural talent for translating his knowledge to the viewer in an entertaining manner. If he’s ever crazy enough to become a RUclipsr I would gladly subscribe to watch him renovate his own home.
From what I see, Yanis (right spelling?) is the dream worker: willing to learn, quick learner, does not stay idle for long, always finding something to do or someone to help...How I wish I had workers like him when I was employed. Keep up the good work!🛠
I remember Amaury on Chateau Diaries voicing his frustration with the lumber in France compared to what he worked with in England. He said that it was kiln dried lumber from Canada. Glad to know we’re good for something 🇨🇦😄

Thank you for the video work, Alex, I’ve seen more nooks and crannies that only add to the mystery history of The Convent ❤❤ We are all loving every inch of this place ❤❤
Yanis is such a hard worker, he is doing the work of two men when he is unloading the truck of wood!!! Nice to see such a young man with such a great work ethic!!
Billy, you need to carry a large ziplock bag in your vehicle to put your receipts in, then they're together when you need them. If necessary you can even label the bag by month.
See Phil arrived just in time to offer his wisdom and saved Billy from making all those trips.Simons demonstration on the stone wall is interesting.Looks nice if you can away with having to plasterboard when you can use the plaster directly onto the wall.
Very interesting to see Simon experimenting with French plaster. Hoping he might give us a peek at his renovation project at some point. I know we had a glimpse at his caravan but how he's progressing would be interesting. Hope you all have a wonderful time this weekend at Phil's place, so good to see you all together. Cheers
Well done all of you. Can I just say what a nice young man Yannis is and such a hard worker, as are all of you but for a small slight build young man he’s got a great work ethic. Crack on!!
what has his build and age got to do with it? LOL. I was in the Police. I once had a very strange assessment of my work.. For a WOMAN and an older officer (at the time) she is surprisingly active. As if less was expected from me. In fact I was the one with the biggest work record and got stuck in with everything with enthusiasm.. nothing to do with my sex.. all to do with my upbringing. I baulked like hell at that.. and it was recognised for the misogynistic remark it was. I liked the man who made it but he got it wrong on that occasion. I am sure you didn't mean it either but do taller older people have better built in work ethic.. I think not.
Sorry I have cognitive issues and get my words and sentences all wrong at times. What I meant was for a young man of slight build, he’s a lot stronger than he looks and so often young people are portrayed as lazy and have no pride or work sense and sometimes even no sense of duty to their work….if that’s the right word. Yannis comes across as someone who’s got a good work ethic and he is obviously willing to learn and enjoying it. I’m sure the fact that Simon is such a good teacher and encourages him helps him too. Sorry if I confused or offended I didn’t mean to . I get very confused sometimes.
Yay, Billy, we're enjoying your many talents, and love the 'cracking on' each day! Yanis is fast becoming one of our favorite and talented persons at the Convent. We hope he is enjoying his new skill of plastering. That, along with his great work ethic, will make him a plus on any construction project. Cheers ~
With all that caring heavy stuff around, it’s obvious way Billy has got more and more mucked every week . This kind of work makes you really strong and give you endurance in contrast to people just lifting weights in the gym! Ryan and Billy are so cute together, it’s amazing seeing such a wonderful friendship evolve and grow❤ I love how respectful and kind they are to each other and still having that fun banter😊 I really miss having friends!! I’m all alone now, my best very close friend died suddenly of a ruptured aorta the day before she would have turned 34 in September of 2018. We actually had a surprise planned and all.. God how I miss her😢 My closest male friend who reminds me so much of Ryan in both in looks and personality , and helped me renovate my house, sadly took his own life the next spring. It’s so important to cherish your friends and family , before you know it, they are gone.. and bonds like that can never be replaced..
Yannis alway offers to help and never complains. Love watching plasterwork and learning tricks of the trade. I have joint compound here in the states to finish a small renovation. That’s cool that Ryan uses a box for carrying small items. I do the same (groceries and small purchases) and have found that friends do too. I also have a large shallow plastic tray (meant for under a washing machine) that is in my trunk permanently for when I buy plants.
I thought Friday's were light work days. You all worked really hard today! Enjoy your evening, sounds like Simon has plans for you all tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Simons property :)
You are doing a fabulous job, look forward each day to watch them. Ignore any negative remarks, they do not walk in your shoes. God bless. Monica from Crestview, Florida
Love these added contributions. Alex's camera talent, Simon's expertise of education is wonderful also. Love seeing the little places Alex finds. Along with Ryan's humor and your discoveries. And Yannis sweet lil self ❤
Yannis is the best. Always eager to pitch right in and help. Phil, you’re a good man and friend, but in turn Billy is a good friend to all. Simon, I hope one day we can see your farmhouse. xx
This is what I love about watching different UTube channels in France, Portugal and England so many different places, situations, solutions to so many many problems. It's all great. Well done to Billy Gwen and their team and friends. Good luck Simon on your renovations, hopefully I'll get to see your channel.
He has been in France since he was like 5 and that makes a difference, and they spoke English at home. He is just one of those that enjoys life and I just adore him and his smile, his humor.
Simon, I am impressed at how knowledgeable you are and how patient you are with Yannis in teaching him different skills. Not everyone is a teacher. Yannis is a very hard worker who learns quickly. I enjoy watching the videos!

Great video Billy. Always entertaining. Love all the guys that have helped along the way, and still part of the team. The friendships are beautiful to witness. Enjoy the weekend. ❤
That young man will end up owning his own company and will do quite well for himself. Too bad people - especially young people lack a work ethic. Everyone wants and think they deserve but are unwilling to work.
And here you thought you were going to have to work 10x harder! So nice of Yannis and Phil to come and assist you! And of course can't forget Ryan giving you a lift to get the shower tray! Things are really coming along well. Ooo I'll look forward to a Sunday video... though I probably won't get to see it till Monday... work and all. Have a great weekend boys!
Yanis is such a hard worker! Never stays still, always finds ways to be productive and helpful. Amazing work ethic. He also seems to be less shy these days. Phil needs to find ways in which to lure Billy to his projects at just the right time he needs a hand 😂
Outstanding episode! Everybody doing fantastic work! Many projects moving along very well! Looking forward to seeing Simon's projects! And also Philip 's restoration of the Rover!😊❤
Billy a suggestion. Can you do one of those restoration before and after videos. I was going to share to Facebook but this is kind of in the middle of the project. Trying to find you more subscribers. 🤑
Billy, expanding on @iu.5146 ideas of dealing with mountains of receipts, may I suggest an incredibly easy, fool proof way of maintaining receipts in chrono order ? Get a wire coat hanger and straighten it. Bend it to make a "J" shape. Fashion a hook from the top of the "J" and attach it to a handy spot (i'd suggest somewhere inside your car/truck.) Every time you get a new receipt, simply push it onto the short end of the "J". No fancy stuff here - just push it on through the paper. At the end of the month, add one piece of paper with the month and year, take it off it's hook, twist the two ends of the "J" together and toss it into a plastic bin. Chrono order, easy to scan at your leisure , and .....no muss, no fuss ! Best, Kathy
I like that you're back to the other music you were using at the beginning. Alex is going a great job with the filming. I really enjoy the shots at the beginning of the videos of shots throughout the convent. Crack on!
The countryside there in your part of rural France looks very similar to parts of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virgina in the US. The villages and towns look very different there though and are much, much more lovely.

In each episode we have seen Yannis, he has proved to be such a hard worker and so proactive. Definitely a Team player.
Yanis is really getting comfortable actively contributing to each video !
Awesome 🙂
Yannis is a great addition to the team! Hard worker, smart, good attitude. What more could you want? Kudos to you, Yannis!

We need a video about yannis, the man the myth the legend!
Simon is certainly an authority in his field! He is knowledgeable and proficient. Billy you are very lucky with Simon and Yanis too!
Phil is so good helping everyone else . It would be nice to see a combined work party spend some time at his place.

I remember Amaury on Chateau Diaries voicing his frustration with the lumber in France compared to what he worked with in England. He said that it was kiln dried lumber from Canada. Glad to know we’re good for something 🇨🇦😄
I remember that too. Amaury is a master craftsman of course.

Plus, didn't they say the few nuns left from this convent moved to Canada?
Hello Canada from South Dakota. Hopefully you can put an end to all your wildfires up there before winter.
In Brazil we plaster the bricks just like Simon did with that wall. I still remember my dad "watering" the wall with a brush to smooth it over. But he used to shake the brush (kinda) onto the wall - pretty much like a priest on a mass blessing.
It was so nice to see Yanis smiling! 😊
Well. Ok. I'm watching plaster dry and am actually enjoying it.
Thanks guys!
Good job Simon!
😂 Good point! Simon is such a skilled craftsman.
