Roy Freirich Have always loved this song. My aunt bought it for me on a 45, when I spent the summer with her in 1985 - I was nine at the time. To this day, this song makes me think of that Summer, playing it on a record player, at her house. By any chance, would you know where the video was filmed? It’s a beautiful song and have listened to it a lot over the past few days.

JMJArkansas40. Indeed (but Tina Turner was a rock artist more than R&B). Aretha had #1 with Get It Right in 83, and started off 80s with big movie and song (Freedom) from Blues Brothers. She never really went away, her songs so part of music history spanning generations and genres

    This song is, SERIOUSLY, funky!
She had a, GREAT, 'second-coming,' in terms of her career, in the 80's; this song, 'Who's Zooming Who?' and the duet with George Michael, for, 'I knew you were waiting.'
And, when, you are talking about the gretest female vocalist of all-time, I CANNOt think of ANYONE who tops her!

This song healed a lot of broken, and often angry, hearts. Back in 1985 (I was 29), I would go to the I-Beam Club in San Francisco's Haight-Asbury District, a gay club, now in the annals of San Francisco gay history. The DJ I knew would play it in one of his sets at just after 10:30PM, right when the place began to thump. The floor would get packed. Everyone in the place sang along to the chorus of the song. Right where it reached, *"My man, I don't need you to be bringing me down,"* the whole place would erupt, yell out and act out the motions like in the video. *(I did not know there was a video of the song at the time.)* By then, everyone on the dance floor and along the walls would break out dancing like crazy. Total pandemonium. They would be dancing on the barstools. The bar tenders would be dancing on the bar counters. If it was your time to get over someone who did you wrong, THAT was your chance for the evening. It worked for me. One of my all-time favorite Aretha Franklin songs. *(PS: A regular to the I-Beam as a patron, and a few times as a live-to-track performer, was the legendary, fabulous Sylvester, who, by the way, performed backups on this song and several others on the "Who's Zoomin' Who?" album.)*

This is one of Aretha's best videos. What's noticeable at the beginning of the song is how her voice was much lower in the '80s compared to previous decades. Aretha started out as a high soprano (she could have been an opera singer), but the chain smoking caught up with her in 1980. Her voice was noticeably different on her first album at Arista.

Aretha started smoking at age 13! For most of her adult life, she smoked up to 3 packs per day. She didn't quit until 1992 when she was 50. At the time, she said smoking was "messing with voice". I could have told her that in 1980! Unfortunately, it was like one of the main causes of her pancreatic cancer.

It occurs to me that the music industry ran out of ideas for good songs or just simply stopped trying in the mid '90's. Because even the best Grammy winning music of today doesn't sound as good as this minor hit from Aretha's '80's comeback career.

music always been about money but before all those electronic auto-tune whatever technologies you needed someone really talented to sell music. nowadays you just need someone who can sell himself in front of cameras music is made electronically in studios , singing is fine tuned in studios, technology makes it easy and the industry does not need true talents.

Andrew Gordon music died around 2002. What are now “stars” and “talent” is terrible vocals over that horrible noise that i am not even sure how you would put it to sheet music or anything else its like a tick tick tick ticket tickkkk repeat noise.

ewalker3 think way before then. When MTV (back when was about music) changed much as suddenly it was a lot about the look, not the voice as much. It was almost impossible to have too hit without video. R &B and rock now are no comparison to 70s and 80s.

Of all her legendary timeless virtual body of work being hits just about, for this song to keep coming back into my head is more telling about my love life and the lives and generations yet to be born that will still feel the musical soul feast and be affected by Aretha's heavenly voice and range that take you all the way to Heaven's steps, well these things say more about Me. Franklin than anything. I hope she knows how many lives her voice touched, how many harmonious expressions her music gave to emotions that can barely even be described. I am so grateful she used her divine gift as gifts to unselfishly share with all of us. Thank you Me. Aretha, you will always be loved.

This is a real gem classic 80s and she is rockin it! It reminds me of Tina Turner a bit though she took it further. I would've love to see them dueling vocally over a piece like this. Two Master egos. Everyone would of ate it up. However God Mother tore it up!
