  • This great poem by the late, very much lamented, poet and political activist Adrian Mitchell can be applied to any of the wars of recent times, whether in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, or the planned war on Iran. Adrian, who was a committed activist in the anti-war movement, repeatedly revised the text, as lies for new wars were trotted out by the likes of George W Bush and Tony Blair. This video shows the celebrated reading Adrian made on 11 June 1965 at London's Royal Albert Hall, when the Vietnam war was slaughtering millions in the name of "democracy and "freedom".

What an incredible strong poetic and political voice he had. You must be very proud. This is one of the greatest poems of the twentieth century and massively underrated in my opinion.

One of the most moving poems I have ever read in the past and now have heard. The intensity of his words makes me sad at the truth of them.

This isn't only about war - it's about ignorance of every kind.

We were all supposed to learn from this but it seems the same mistakes and evil deeds keep happening.

I heard this poem only once when I was about 13. It made enough of an impression that I was able to remember enough to be able to find it again now, 53 years later.

Certainly intense, but relative to today (08/01/2014) that we look the other way when greed tells us lies about the issues of today! Having lived through the lies of Vietnam, this poem is all to reminiscent and current at the same time. Who is profiting from the current struggles? Not me! I'm paying with my finances and others are paying with their lives. How do we stop the bloodshed and the agony? How do we achieve Peace? I'm a at a loss.

"Come you masters of war, you that build the big guns..." Bob Dylan wrote the definitive anti-war song just as the Vietnam War was kicking off. The song links warfare with big business [for which, read capitalism...]. Hear it and decide for yourself.

Masters od war by Bobby Dyland and War Pigs by Black Sabbath....both powerful anti war songs that can't be beaten.
Also Dylan's "Murder Most Foul" ...is over the top and reveals Dylan's true feelings on JFK.

Good songs all in terms of a powerful message
But I raise you Eric bogle, green Fields of France. It encapsulates the tragedy and futility of war in utterly melancholy.

Brilliant poem and recitation. He kept adding to this poem over the years right into 'Gulf war 2' but it never improved on the original here.
