I used to do it for my business and it worked like a charm for keeping me from living in reactionary mode. I got out of the habit when I started working from home. I'm watching your videos to help me get back into the groove of doing it. It's just such a great self management method.

Sarra, I'm trying to determine how to word my some specific marketing goals. I have a large backlist and I want to create and monitor AMS, FB, and BB CPC ads for each first in series. But that's ongoing. So, I feel like it would never move from the GET IT DONE stage. How do you handle ongoing tasks in your goals?

    • @HeartBreathings
      @HeartBreathings  5 лет назад +3

@@inesjohnsonwrites The goal itself would be more along the lines of what you want to achieve by running ads. Increased sales, I imagine! So the goal would be something like "Run and monitor ads in order to increase sales to xyz.". There could be various projects under that, like researching each ad site, writing copy for each ad, creating images, researching comparable authors. Then for the recurring daily tasks like monitoring, I would typically create a sticky note that has each week on it. So, there are 13 weeks in an average quarter, and I would put "week 1: monitor ad and record data" "week 2: monitor ad and record data", etc. And just move them down. If you were trying to establish a daily habit, you could even just make a daily sticky note for it. Day 1 or 1/1: monitor ads.
Once something is habitual and not an active focus or goal, it goes into my planner as a recurring task (I mention these in the theme day section of the planner), but it doesn't go on my board. For me now, these are things like checking sales, posting to my Facebook group, checking email, etc. They have a place in my schedule, but they are not a goal focus at that point.

My respect for you is through the roof, Sarra. Thank you for putting a little humanity into project management. So many programs never address how to handle an uncontrollable situation (family emergency, etc) let alone how to pick up the pieces and soldier on. Thank you for the whole picture.

Thank you for being so real and open about your life! It's super easy to look at someone we admire on RUclips or social media in general and think, "Wow, they must never have a bad day." I know this comment is coming late in the game, but I just felt the need to thank you. Just because miscarriage is common doesn't make it any less painful for those of us who go through it, and we need to give ourselves time and space to grieve, no matter how lofty our goals.

This is awesome...seriously as a therapist who daily sees clients who have anxiety and depression, it is so important to have this kind of transparency. So thank you so much for this. We are humans and moments like this helps us to become better ones. Trauma is real and we need to be cognizant of how we heal from and through it. Again thank you for this vulnerability. So glad I subscribed. Blessings to you and yours.

Thank you thank you thank yoooou for sharing all of this. I had a recommendation to watch your kanban videos after someone saw my own video where I talked about how much I struggle with prioritising and focusing as a creative trying-to-be-self-employed person with way too many ideas for the time I have. I was manically writing down huge to do lists and chopping them up and trying to make sense of everything haha! I will be watching and rewatching your videos because you are describing exactly the directions I need to be heading in. I am going to try and implement a kanban board into my current setups and I will make a video with whatever I come up with, and I will for sure mention you with gratitude. So I wanted to thank you for sharing. I love the parts about giving yourself time during traumatic events, and what you went through definitely resonated with my own personal experiences. Miscarriage is not talked about enough and it can be absolutely devastating, I am glad you shared, along with the positive message to look after yourself and readjust your goals to allow for the healing xxxxxx

Thank you so much for going over your 90 method again. I put it all in my bullet journal at the beginning of the year but I think I need a board because I've barely looked at it since. I've hired an editor for my first book, who I'll be starting work with in March. In the mean time I want to get my MS as polished as possible. And while she's working on it I need to be learning lots and lots about the business side of being an indie author. You and Joanna Penn are my chosen mentors on this indie author journey and I'm so thankful for your honest advise and sincerity.
Also thank you for being brave and sharing your experience. I struggle with infertility as well. I can barely talk to friends about it let alone youtube strangers. But that's just proof that your viewers are a cultivated safe space for you. Thank you for sharing and take care of yourself.

Cheering you on RIGHT NOW and ALWAYS! I sooooooo appreciate your authenticity! I just recently found you on RUclips, while waiting to get on a flight back to the west coast, and I quickly downloaded many of your videos to watch on the plane. LOVED all of them because you add SO much value in the content and production. So, thank you.
As a side note, I am an "older" mom and had many miscarriages and a rocky road which eventually led to the perfect little gift in the form of a spit fire little Red head girl. You are wise to take the time that YOU need. Just know that it is a journey....take care of yourself.
Another quick side note....I am not a writer, and I don't even come close to considering myself a "creative'; however, your channel content is so well done I have used almost everything you have presented to get me laser focused on my business (I am a day trader and real estate investor). So, THANK YOU! Cheering you on.....YOU GO GIRL!

I don’t know if you’ve ever read my comments, but I hope you do because I want you to know how much I love you! I am not an author, rather a college student (future accountant) who wants to find time for things other than just stressing about work and school. But I LOVE your videos because you are the kind of person I want to be! I love your views on life and joy and productivity. (And the 90 day method sounds so useful.) What you said in this video about giving yourself time and grace was EXACTLY what I needed to hear this week. I fell into an emotional funk and ended up skipping two days of classes just to cry and sleep and almost nothing on my to do list got done. I felt so bad about it and almost gave up on my planner. But you reminded me that life happens and we are not robots, sometimes we just need time and space in order to find that joy again!
I am so sorry about your miscarriage. I am glad however that you took the time you need to grieve. I hope you continue to heal and find your joy. 💕

I started using a kanban board last year after I watched your first video about your system. It has been AMAZING. I have to confess that my Q4 didn't go how I planned either, but one of the things I like about the quarterly planning is that I get a fresh start more than once a year. I also like that I have enough weeks laid out that I don't feel like I'm constantly having to drop everything and make another dang plan AGAIN, which is how it felt when I tried to do monthly planning.
I've recently read "The 12 Week Year" by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington. It goes really well with the 90 day planning, but adds in a couple of other tools I've found helpful. They have you lay out a plan week by week for 12 weeks, and then give yourself a weekly score based on how well you followed the plan (read the book for more info on that). This go-around I did the 90 day goals like you suggest, and then assigned projects to each goal. When I broke the goals down into the smaller tasks, I also assigned each task to a particular week, as suggested in 12 Week Year, after checking with my calendar to see what else was already scheduled for that week that might interfere. Then I wrote those tasks on stickies and put them on my kanban board, as well as listing them on my "score sheet" thing in my planner. At the beginning of each week I sit down with my planner and assign that week's tasks to specific days where I think they'll realistically fit.
I'm only on week 4, but so far I'm doing pretty well on my weekly score sheet. (I also like that The 12 Week Year points out that 80% success is a realistic goal, you don't have to get 100% all the time in order to achieve your goals.) Things don't always go as planned, but I always feel like I know where I am and what I'm meant to be doing, which is SUCH an improvement over just having a never-ending, constantly-expanding "should do" list of impossible expectations. Thanks for helping me find my feet and get on a productive track. :)
[And oh, sweet woman, I grieve with you! It feels like a big deal because it IS a big deal. I can relate so much to all those feels. Take care of you.]

I'm starting to be a bit more productive but I know I can still do better and it's a work in progress! I'm getting ready to start the process of self publishing my own books and am feeling overwhelmed. A friend once told me this: when you're going through really hard times to set a daily goal that is so simple you can't avoid it. For instance, write one sentence today. If you write the sentence, you've accomplished so much. Often, though, we'll write a few sentences or more and beat our goal without even realizing it.
If you need some slow and easy writing sprints with someone, let us know in your Facebook groups! I sprint every day with others in Slack, Discord, FB Groups, and messenger. Sometimes you may need that mental support.
I picked up your HB90 planner in December and I'm feeling out my expectations vs. reality. I am so thankful for your dedication to this channel and helping others. I was having a very, very hard time overcoming my worries and fears to get started with my own writing again (Spent years as a ghotstwriter).

One of the things I appreciate about you and your channel is your openness. I am sorry about your loss but so very grateful that you shared your story. First quarter goal: learning how to be specific about goals/projects and breaking them down into doable steps. Thanks for the motivation! What is the benefit of purchasing your $30 calendar instead of the $15 calendar package if both are only 90 days? I know I'm missing something obvious. lol

This might be your most helpful video yet for me. I'm a special needs person. I've been struggling with how to even begin to create a structure to work with. And I have all of what you said, about quickly getting behind and having to scrap the whole thing, so this was very useful for me.

Watching this video for the first time now. Thank you for sharing your miscarriage journey from last fall, for being so real and transparent. It makes me even more happy for you that you are about to have your baby girl! Also, your planning process and kanban board example are very helpful.

I bought your planner and also started a Kanban board for this quarter. The planner is really helping and it is nice having a visual representation of my progress in the kanban board. I'm definitely in love with the planner (though I think I'll get even more out of it when actually publish my first book), but I think I need a couple more quarters to see if I'm completely sold on the board.

We want to be productive but we are all human, I think is a great idea to plan and be happy to see what we accomplished even if seen the results also mean seen everything that we didnt accomplished. At least that's already planned for the next round

I’m sorry to hear of your loss. I had two miscarriages between my two boys about 8 years ago and I still have moments when it really hits me. You say you don’t really stress about whether the yellow tasks get done - maybe you should?! Be kind to yourself. I find you so positive - turning your own trauma into help for others. Inspirational. Take care of yourself.

We dealt with secondary infertility as well, and it is so hard. We eventually were blessed with our second son, and I’m sorry to hear you had a miscarriage. Thank you for sharing such a personal story. Life always gets in the way, and painful things are even tougher. Love and light and hugs to you.

I started using a kanban board, but I didn't move my stickie notes because it was out of reach (duh) I'm going to reposition it from my notebook to a small white board next to the door in my office. Thanks for motivating me!!!

I heard about the Kanban Board through another RUclips video on a channel that I subscribe to, but I was disappointed to find that it was all about sticky notes. I can't do sticky notes! They remind me of a messy sock drawer. :( With that said, I did take away some great tips in other areas. I plan to subscribe and will just breeze over the Kanban Board content. Thank you for all you do.

I am 1 in the 10. PCOS affects so many aspects of our body aside from the reproductivity. Health and Family ALWAYS come first. One of the things I've learned with the Kanban board is that I THOUGHT I could use a format in my writers bible. However, I am a very visual person and unless I look in my writers bible every day, I'm not going to be on track. So while I"m out today, I'm buying a hard board and setting that up this weekend. Thank you so much for sharing your loss as well as your success. Hugs and Blessings

Thank you so much for sharing how grief has been affecting you. One of the hardest things I've had to do is restart and reshape my life after coming through cancer diagnosis and treatment (successfully). Two books I've found helpful: Writing as a way of Healing by Louise DeSalvo and The Story You Need To Tell by Sandra Marinella.
