Doing it without T-spins and Holds I can understand. It's like old school Tetris in a way. But doing it without doing a Tetris when there are junk blocks involved? That's ROUGH.
As someone who plays a crap ton of tetris... It is impossible for me to follow that ruleset, muscle memory just takes over whenever I try to do this challenge so I've just given up so it's pretty amazing suisei is able to do it
i've completed the '3 wins in a row' badge many times, i have yet to even get one game completed for this task. it's actually impossible, you can't even play tetris classic style cause you can't do tetrises.
Yeah, I wrote this one off as impossible. I play by instinct. It is not possible to play well and think about it. Especially not in a game like this where time is of the essence at the end. It's also just not fun. Being good at a game is to just play well, not think about every little thing you're doing. If I wanted to think about it I wouldn't bother getting good in the first place.
@@KristopherCharles Muscle memory and instinct are the core components of playing Tetris tbh. As soon as you actively engage in it everything goes to shit. Like breathing, you just don't do it as well when you're thinking about it.
9:58 There comes a point where playing Tetris becomes little more than instinct. Your body just moves on it's own. It knows you want to make the cleanest, most optimal plays, even though you're telling yourself not to. It's impossible to resist the urge. You no longer make the decisions. You are no longer in control.
IIRC In Tetris 99, there's an achievement when you get top 10 without T-Spin, Tetris or Hold... 3 times. That's what Sui-chan is aiming, maybe. Really feels near-impossible IMO, since it basically locks you away from being able to perform nearly everything well - No HOLD means you can't combo for long, especially 4 wide, No Tetris means you can't downstack/clean garbage safely, while no T-Spin means you can't get to efficiently attack and collect kills/badge. To see Sui-chan suffer by her own challenge is kinda satisfying tho
I mean you kinda are forced to play the stall strat and wait for others to be top-out. You can't receive more than 12 garbage lines in your pending queue and moving pieces around on the ground helps stalling unlike classic Tetris, so the strat are perfect for the challenge.
12:41 Pretty sure she said 'this occasion' (この度) and not 'this journey' (この旅) That challenge is insane though. How are you supposed to survive without doing a Tetris with junk blocks???
It's funny seeing Suisei have to literally say, out loud, for several seconds "don't do a T-spin" before her muscle memory finally yields and lets her do something else.
If it's only your block you can leave some space every 4th line, but they come from other players and it's inevitable to do Tetris to win. And no hold at the same time, gosh.
Suisei has learned the "Tetris BUT _________ challenge" category, congrats Suisei Also, it's not like Suisei's withdrawal of doing tetrises, t-spins, or holds is comparable to other people withdrawing themselves of something illegal. It's just that good having it back like fresh air
I'm just a semi-casual Tetris99 player but I agree - I can manage without T-spin, I can manage without Holding, but I don't think I can manage without Tetris 😂 The pleasure of FINALLY being allowed to Hold, T-spin and Tetris is magnificent 👏👏👏 -uh oh this is the power of Restraint Play--
"Pretend to be a newbie who wins by luck" ruleset...Except even newbies do Tetris when the opprtunity is there! This challenge would already be unfair normally but knowing the try-hard monsters who are all over the Tetris community it's nearly impossible. xD
@@azelynhirano ya but more than tetris and t-spin, not being able to swap pieces for the situation prevents you from being able to do chains very easily which is the bigger clutch especially since you can't tetris or t-spin. The challenge would be very easy if you can swap since you can easily just clear lines one at a time for the chain and gives you the firepower to just not get much garbage and even use the garbage to continue your chain. Heck you could even use 4 wide the entire game and just win like that.
@@codeotaku8857 Tetris 99 is a battle royale. It doesn't matter if you don't have the ability to kill others. The only thing that really matters is to stay alive while the other players kill each other. Being able to clear junk piles matter way more than killing other players.
@@azelynhirano correct me if I'm wrong, but... sending lines against garbage clears garbage. Being able to chain means you get less garbage and you stay alive longer. When clearing one line clears all your garbage and even attacks back, everything becomes easy mode and as a bonus even gets you badges to make it even more low-effort. It is precisely because of the power of chains that people purposely move slow when the 4 wides starts to fire since you start to only need to clear one line to get the same result as people doing tetris and tspin so you can easily survive while having more lines to work with. I don't know if people still use the strat, but there a time in tetris 99 that people purposely built all the way to the top to gain the hate of people who use KO as their target and targeted their attackers and sent 1 line at a time to get free wins.
Does the game have a ranking system as well? I would think it would be even harder to get that achievement with what I'm sure her ranking would be. Also, probably the most yabai Suisei has ever been.
It kind of does, but it doesn't effect much. There's a player level system, but the games matchmaking isn't skill-based, so everyone can be matched with everyone.
@@thegreatmammon3075 it varies between Tetris editions but it's basically locking the T in a space that can only be reached by rotating it. IIRC clearing one or more lines that way grants you a larger multiplier for sending junk to the opponent than clearing with a tetris does. Check the end of the clip for an example.
Correct me if I'm wrong since I haven't played Tetris 99, but doesn't the achievement say you cannot do T-Spin, Tetris, *OR* Hold, meaning you can do 2 of the 3 but you just can't do the last one? For example, you can still do T-Spin and Tetris if you choose not to do Hold? Or does the achievement actually want you to not do all 3 and still reach top 10?
I don't think the fact it may have used "or" matters. When a sentence is phrased in the negative (i.e. restrictions/can't do) they are liked by "or" because they are all individual things. I.e. To win, you can't do this or this or this. Even if most of the "ors" can be subsituted with commas, its still connecting independent restrictions. It's only when a question is phrased in the positive that "or" becomes a divider. This is because rather than looking at things in terms of multiple loss variables it is looked at as a "singular" winning condition. I.e. To win, Suisei must do this and this and this. "Or" only implies multiple winning conditions if used in the positive structure, because it breaks up the singular win condition. I can't read Japanese so I can't tell which it is here, but these are the three options in English.
