This is the song off the album you just turn the volume in your car stereo ALL THE WAY UP and just enjoy the ride. True story. I had someone honk at me at a stoplight and signaled me to roll down my car window. I was hesitant as it was at night but it was in a safe area of the city. So I did, and he yelled out to me "Steely Dan !!" and I gave him my thumbs up! He heard how loud I was playing this song down the boulevard and he was a big fan.
Congrats - you are one of the few smart enough ( or lucky enough) to take the time to react to this underrated gem I’ve been a ‘Dan fan for over 45 years - their catalogue is so incredibly rich yet this track for me has always been in my top 10 for them
Daniel, your dad did you right and you’re returning the favor in spades. I was maybe 19 or 20 when I thought I reached the level of enlightenment you’ve managed to reach at your tender age. Steely Dan deep cuts were unfathomable to a 16-yr old in my days. Zeppelin, Rush et al ruled my world back then. Yet in 2020 you’re going through the best of the best and barely missing a beat. You’re putting your competition to shame without hardly lifting a finger. Keep on learning and enjoying the miracle of music.
Lyrics depict life in Post Global Nuclear Holocaust America: Hence the 'cobalt cigarettes' , 'poison wine' (contamination) 'there's a hole in the ground where they used to know' (explosion craters), 'any man left on the real ground/is the king of the world as i know..'
You are one of the very few reaction channels....I think Soul Train Bro did the full album......who has reviewed this song. One of those personal favorite Steely Dan songs that were not "hits" on the radio but favorite among the true Steely Dan fans.
This is not only the best track from Countdown, which is a great album, but one of my very favourite Dan tracks of all time. It is just perfectly eerie, well conceived and executed, with a middle 8 to savour. Genius is the word. x
@@lewismaddox4132 "Any World" is the best Steely Dan song that they never perform live, even when Donald Fagen shared the stage with backing vocalist Michael McDonald.
@@andyinoregon, few mention it as candidates for reactions. either. Personally I feel that it is one of the most humble and closest you'll hear of Fagan and Becker's frustration with the state of the world.
"Here at the Western World"- You need to react to this song. It will show you how great the are...This song was one of their recording studio cutting room discard. Never fit on any of their albums, so their producer decided to add it to their greatest hit Album Steely Dan Gold. Dean Parks awesome guitar work that makes this song and of course the incredible Steely Dan Lyrics. Any band would kill to have this quality in a song....this was a Steely Dan Cast off. Big thumbs up to all who requested this one (oh look, one of them was me, yay me...!). Countdown to Ecstasy vies with The Royal Scam for title of my favourite Steely Dan, shockingly enough, they were also their two least commercially successful albums. I'd suggest Your Gold Teeth next from this or The Caves of Altimira from Royal Scam. And get back to some Chicago soon too, won't cha?
I laughed out loud at what u said at the end. I remember when someone told me that. While you're on CTE album--I think everyone will recommend a vid on Bodhisattva.
Lead guitar solos by guitarist Denny 'The Be Bopper' Dias. One of the characteristics of Steely Dan's song is juxtaposing smooth, jazzy harmonies, arrangements, and melodies and great sing-along, memorable choruses w/ dark, bitter, 'downer and ironic' story-telling in the lyrics, full of social outcast characters of all types.
I subscribe to a lot of reaction channels, and I’ve seen a couple-three of your reactions, as the algorithm popped them up. This one right here is what turned me into a subscriber. ❤️
"Pearl of the Quarter" from CTE is good too. It sounds more like a country song because of the steel pedal guitar played by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who left the band in '74 to join The Doobie Brothers. It's another song that shows how diverse Steely Dan's music is. They pulled from many different genres. You can't put the Dan in one category. They did it all.
The coolest song off this album is Show Biz Kids, IMHO. My favorite though is Pearl of the Quarter. Really not a bad song on this album. GJ on your reaction to KOTW.
You might be right. It might be "Assassins, cons and rapists, might as well die." Could be he's saying that they should die. However, he might be saying that "he", himself, might as well die. I enjoy ambiguity. "There's a hole in the ground where they used to grow." How big a hole we talkin bout? How many megatons were used to create it? The imagination goes wild. Let's go "watch the sun go brown"!
An opinion: As much as appreciate the hard work that Steely Ben puts into the lyric/picture videos, to be frank, I find them a bit cheesy, literal and annoying. I have found other channels using them and I have to look away when they are playing on these channels because the images, though mostly accurate to the themes of the songs are too literal eg ''time'' = clock image...''heartbeat'' = heart image...etc. To me, music can be completely subjective at times and one persons image of certain song lyrics may not be the ones the music allows me to create in my minds eye. Such is the nature of Steely Dan to me in more cases than not. Pictures are powerful and Steely Bens videos, though clever, speak more about that creator than the real artist being presented. A simple band/artist picture behind the lyrics would be sufficient in my view. This is my own opinion and I don't speak for others who might hold another opinion. Cheers signed: the dolphins off the starboard bow.
@Rod Bathgate That's why I prefer the official audio channel. The album cover with the lyrics open in another tab is all that's needed. That's how I first listened to all of Steely Dan's music this year. Just seeing the album art while hearing the music was enough to create images in my head.

Countdown to Ecstasy is one of my dark favorites of SD. From the same album, highly recommend Your Gold Teeth. Dark, often cryptic lyrics with obscure references, impeccable groove, superb keyboard and guitar solos. Also, from Gaucho, Glamour Profession about the seedy world of LA's cocaine trade, again with terrific keys, horns and guitar.
You should probably just go ahead and film yourself listening to every Steely Dan song. A guy like yourself should not deprive himself of that type of pleasurable knowledge for a second longer than absolutely necessary. I don't see how you could have not already listened to every SD tune, within several hors of hearing the first SD song. Post-apocalyptic from 1973. That's just funny to me.
Back to the Dan! Please consider Bodhisattva and Black Friday & Show Biz Kids.......Upbeat songs and great guitar work!
I don't find Boz Skaggs in your playlists, but I think there are some songs that you might like: "Low Down" "Lido Shuffle" are two that come to mind.
'We're Waiting' from Down Two Then Left is very Dan. They shared some musicians at the time, like drummer supremo Jeff Porcaro.
The song is an End of the World scenario.
I used to think that the solo sounded like a TV game show theme, but saw a comment recently that said it sounded like an air raid siren.
Here a new old one "Blue Collar" by BTO and "Hypnotized" by Fleetwood Mac............ BE SAFE
'Its over' is a good one from BTO
I second Bodhisattva!

My only complaint is the keyboard solos reminds of a 70’ game show.
Right? Match Game, with Charles Nelson Reilly looking bored.
