I've skinned a lot of skunks and I now cut the sacs out and put them in a sealed jar. I use a syringe to take some of the essence out when I'm making call lure or I pack the glands in salt to grind up later to add to bait. Thank you for showing folks how easy it is to make use of skunks.

Skunks were my biggest fear as a novice. Thanks for making it less so.
I am curious about removing the essence - doesn't it stink up the shed when you put it in the jar from the syringe?

Kansas trapper! Just wanted to write you a quick comment. Your videos have been so helpful. Whenever I have a qusestion on skinning or tanning. You always seem to find a way to step by step instructions. Thank you for donating your time. Sure you've helped many trappers like myself.

I just picked a big one off the side of the road, got to the “triangle” part and accidentally cut into the gland. That’s not a mistake I ever want to make again. I really need the tool you use to hang them

I used to do some trapping but it's been several years ago, your video brought back lot of memories about catching skunks and porcupines and trying to get them out of "leg-holds" without killing them (control-poles sort-of worked, as I recall). Anyway, I enjoyed you video.

You make a great presentation on all of your videos. Thank you for posting in such a clear and concise manner. You can tell you know what you are doing. I trapped my first skunk on accident. I can now go dispatch without getting sprayed. I will come back and comment on how that went. LOL Thanks again and happy fourth of July.

I like to use a little DAWN dish soap on the ones that have sprayed ...the dish soap helps lift the oil , which holds the scent off a bit better than " just water"

Hey o. Skinned my first skunk today. Wasn't planning on it. I set a trap hoping to get a raccoon and got a skunk instead.
Your video was great gave me what I needed. I used the hind leg to hind leg method cut with a precision knife just below the skin. Skunk kinda stunk still but it really wasn't too bad. I easily avoided the essence glands and got a real nice hide. Thanks for your vid as its what I went off of!!!

So how to you deal with skunk spraying you or itself when its trapped? I trapped one and he went ape shit spraying when I came withing 15 yards. I had to shoot from there and I waited a few hours to loose him from the trap. The smell was all over him, me (regardless that I left), and I pretty much didn't want to deal with it after that.

  • @jim1550

First rule of gun safety *Don't look down the barrel*
First rule of skunk field clean. Stare *DIRECTLY* into the barrel as you diddle the triggers.

  • @davidhilt9527
    @davidhilt9527 8 месяцев назад

So I did this a while back and tried using a couple sticks to strip the tail since I don’t have a stripper and an old timer told me that was a fine way to do it. Well the last 2 inches or so of flesh came off, which was probably 6-8 inches of fur. I figure I could see back on after fleshing and tanning, it when I went to flesh all the fur just came out. That however did not happen when I fleshed the part of the tail still attached to the body part of the pelt. Should you not flesh the tail like you do the rest? I was thinking maybe it got chewed on or injured at some point which was maybe why it came off in the first place. Any thoughts?

Rimfires. Skunks shot in the chest die quickly, I've shot them with .22lr, .22 mag, .17hmr and pellet rifles, Honestly a high velocity pellet rifle is a fine skunk rifle. You can get pretty close to a skunk if you are hunting them so you don't need alot of gun. And if you trap one it's real easy shooting.

I skinned a skunk today. I used a rather dull knife and a pair of scissors. I didn't hang her up when I skinned her. I found her in the MIDDLE of a busy highway. I almost got ran over. It took me 4 hours. I did an open skinning. I tore off half off her tail. There are only 3 very small holes in the pelt somehow.
I should have watched this, haha.
In my defense... It was the first mammal I have ever skinned, and only the second animal I have ever skinned. (The first was a gopher snake, he turned out perfectly somehow. :P)
I still have to flesh her and and I have loads of fat and meat on her skin. I can't even see the skin though all of the fat. 😬
I hope my extreme failure made someone cringe! 😜
