Yeah, you're not wrong. In film there is a rule called 'show don't tell'. I liked the post apocalyptic, end of the world stuff at the beginning, because that had mystery, and intrigue, and questions. But then it turned into an episode of True Colors with guns.
You can keep going back in time. The first novel about the post apocalypse would be The Last Man by Mary Shelley (1826). Of course, that isn't post WWII. Post WWII as a sub genre should really be about a war ending civilization.
OMG my all time favourite PA novel Earth Abides turned into a movie. I'M delighted. Men may go and come, but earth abides., I hope Alas Babylon is turned into a movie soon.
Because the plot can be summed up in two words. "Plague" and "survivors." What you want to have happened was for the "whole damn" synopsis to have been spoiled so that you could grandstand while complaining.
Hasn't spoiled anything. I've read the book, and still looking forward to this. Also, extensive research shows audience in general enjoy a movie more if they have seen some clips. Look it up and, if the evidence supports it,change your mind. I dare you
Fantastic novel. I’ve read it so many times and never gets old. First time was in middle school in late 1960s. My sister taught literature in high school and assigned reading it. My whole family used to fantasize about who would/could play each role. We rarely agreed. I’m tue last now as my parents and sisters have passed away. They would be thrilled to see that Earth Abides had not been forgotten and instead was made into a film. However, they’d be very worried that the filmmakers followed the book and cast characters appropriately. By what I’ve seen in this preview, I’m concerned… I suggest to all who read this comment - find the book and read it.
This was one of the first sci-fi books I ever read back in the 60's and I read it again last year after a hard time finding it. It was still a good read. I hope this series does it justice, especially as this was the only fiction book the author wrote. Good fiction never goes away.
@@TheAkashicTraveller It is a fiction related to a supposed epidemic that wipes out most of the human race and what happens afterwards. The library would have put it in the sci-fi section, as would the bookstores.
Whoever survived that pandemic seems pretty lucky to me. Aside from the loneliness part, they still have all the resources and technology in the world at their disposal. Power seems to be running, which means that utilities needed for living in comfort is still available and usable. It might not last forever, but it seems like more than enough for an entire lifetime.
@@HuplesCat I did say that it wouldn't last forever. But what was available should've been more than enough for the very, very few that remains. But it's fiction so I suppose the author can do whatever they want for the sake of the plot.

@@TheSighphiguy The comfort I was referring to was relative to a doomsday/collapse of civilization scenario. With the assumption that survivors are very few (like maybe a few hundreds or a few thousands in the entire world) there should be more than enough resources available to last them their lifetimes. Obviously they won't be sitting on their asses in the meanwhile. We're also making the assumption that they are not completely incompetent with no creativity or intellectuals skills whatsoever. Power won't necessarily be a problem either because they don't always require a power grid. Plenty of portable generators running on fuel or other sources can be used. Solar panels once installed can last over 2 decades. Just swap them out in case they fail. Before power goes out on the grid, fuel can be collected from the pump till that particular station runs out. When the pumps stops working because power goes out, the fuel can be siphoned off the thousands of vehicle left in the now empty roads and cities. And that's not considering the thousands of gas tanks which suppliers have already stocked for sale under normal conditions. The point here is that people aren't living under the constant threat of some imminent and pervasive danger, like mutant monsters, aliens, or zombies and the like. In a world where you're free to take whatever you want without restriction, there is plenty to make use of.
Hammer is wrong. It was a small sledge hammer, not a rock hammer, and he finds it along his journey. Can't get the small thing right you wont get the big things right. But the hammer is both a small and a very big thing. It's how legends are born, and legends turn to myth...
the hammer, a single-jack was a significant symbol in the book... You are right, details matter. Yes, you can bring to a modern scenario but I am hoping they keep the true content and concepts of the book.
@davesunhammer4218 what the hammer looks like isn't an issue. Though I agree that this hammer isn't as described. The plot point is the important part. Even in the trailer, there's far too many shots of it. I'm hoping that it's to illustrate to book enthusiasts that it exists and they downplay it in the main.
If this is as good as it looks, it could edge out what had been the definitive adaptation of Earth Abides- the two-part radio adaptation done for CBS' Escape.
How the hell did the trees get so big so fast? You notice the trees growing up in the cities and by the size of those trees that's 15 years or more of growth and the guy doesn't look like he aged 15 years from the starting of the trailer. I'm trying to figure out how the hell he survived the snake bite.
I read the book a couple of times as a kid. I knew the importance of that hammer. But NOBODY carries a hammer like that. It's stupid. All so the camera can see it. Ish was a very phlegmatic character. Too much yelling.
