Thank you for the memories. I grew up in Plank Lane and think of the time we grew up as children. As My Dad used to say , We were poor but we were Happy. Everyone helped one another especially during the Strikes.
My Grandfather and Great Grandfather both served over 90 years between them at Bradford colliery in Manchester. My Great Grandfather retired due to the impact of numerous injuries he sustained in His 53 years. My Grandfather was made redundant in 1968 when they closed the pit. He served 41 years... The site today is where the Etihad Stadium sits. A memorial was recently finally placed outside the stadium to commemorate the centuries of mining that helped build Manchester into what it is today. I visited Leigh colliery a few years ago. Great to see the tower and pump house still there... You could feel the spirit.
Was down Chapel St last week, it would be absolutely buzzing any day of the week in the early 80's when I worked there, especially so on Fridays when Wardy's and Leigh Spinners and Peter Blonde's all finished early. Now it's completely dead, it's like a carcass, pubs, shops, chippies, Vicky Garage all gone, so tragic.
Leigh in the 80s and 90s was brilliant id go back to them days the town centre now has been completely ruined and all the pubs are closing great to see these uploads pal
