Zechariah Childs haha my man, you should see how we welcome back old heroes like David Freese and Jim Edmonds when they come back to our stadium with another team.
@@garretgarland7838 Lmao, lets not go overboard Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, will ever top Pujols return, and that standing O after the HR. I was at all 3 Pujols returns games.
The humility of this moment reminds me of Mariano R. last game. There's no tromping around acting like the best player in baseball, or exploiting how awesome he is. He puts his head down on the bases fighting tears, hugs his teammates, thanks the crowd, continues to fight his tears and then disappears into the dugout. Amazing.
Him obviously fighting back tears while rounding the bases and that hug with Waino and Yadi just said it all. His love for the Cardinals organization, the team, the fans, the city. He clearly will miss it and so will everyone else. I personally support management's decision, but in no way do I still want to see him go, but I think it's the right route.
+Mick D +Mick D I would love to see him continue wearing the Birds in the Bat uniform, but I honestly don't see any room for him in the out field. With Grichuk, Piscotty, Jose Martinez, Moss(who can play right when Adams or someone else is playing first), and Wong(who can play center). if he wants to continue playing, I think he might be better off looking for an American League team to play DH.
American TigerJohnScalf Yep, that seems to be be the general consensus. Playing DH. I want to see him make the HoF, but it's a stretch. He will make the Cardinals Hall, though.
+Mick D yeah, the MLB HoF is probably a stretch, I would love to see him there, but like you said he will be in the Cardinal HoF. He was a hell of a Cardinal and I hope once his career is through, he'll sign a one day contract and retire a Cardinal.
It is almost hard to not tear up a little when seeing this and thinking of him somewhere else next season. He is a great player and a great human being who deserves a lot of respect. God bless Holliday and his family no matter what life holds in store for them. Holliday will no doubt make the Cardinals' HoF. If it weren't for injuries his career would lead to Cooperstown. I will certainly miss his leadership and his excellent and unselfish playing in St. Louis.
The emotions were thick, tears were flowing in my house when He fired it out of the park! Not many times do you get to witness when these things come to pass
phil Kilmer my son and I are both big Cards fans. my son's all time favorite player is Holliday. He's pretty sad that Matt isn't returning but this was a special moment for us. We both high fived each other and cheered like crazy. My kid loves baseball, he's a heck of a ball player and Holliday is a huge reason for that. Thank you Matt for being an awesome example to my 8 year old boy!!
Yeah, I cried like a girl too. This man is truly one of the game's most amazing players, and this was one of the most beautiful moments in recent baseball. Love you Matt! Thank you for an amazing career!
Sometimes I come back to this just to remember. Never was there an underappreciated Cardinal like Matt Holliday. Up or down, he's now a Cardinal forever and I wish I could go back and just appreciate seeing him in person one more time. He was never a super dependable player butt sometimes the most dependable, if that can be made sense of. Like, he would fail in big spots, but excluding the 2009 NLDS, he was good enough that when he ca.e through in huge situations, like this, you just weren't surprised.
Yeah ik right lol. Its not like Jeters last AB at Yankee Stadium or Riveras last inning or Arods double his last AB. I get the guy was a St Louis favorite and such but whatever i guess lol. Guess its the same way us yankee fans were with Mark Texeria.
I've been watching him since I was a little kid...I'm 17 years old now and I cried like a baby when they traded him. He's my all time favorite player. Cardinal or not his story inspires me and just...damn. I hope, though I realize it probably won't happen, that maybe one day he comes back. He is just amazing and a great person. Exactly what being a cardinal stands for
Matt had tears in his eyes coming up to bat....and I did too. His final season with the Cardinals cut short by a Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery, throwing at his hands, and trying to break the bones there, and succeeding in breaking his thumb. Its not a Cardinals vs Cubs thing, that was cheap baseball and we lost a farewell season to a legend because of it.
I just left the Dan McLaughlin podcast of Aug 2022 to watch this, saw the game live at the time, Matt Holiday was crying during the at bat, before the home run.! What a ballplayer, what a man. Then a home run at his last at bat in Busch Stadium! Stud
I caught a Matt Holiday home run one game in St. Louis. Day time game, midweek. My buddy and were sitting in left field. Saw two seats open on the front row at the start of the game. We said hell let’s go there. In the bottom of the first Matt jacks a two run homer straight to me. Went off my forearm, hit my lap, and I snagged it. All on tv. We were so excited and scared at the same time because the stands were packed and knew someone was just late on their way. We celebrated with everyone around us. After,we went back up to the top to buy some celebration beers . Chugged two. And came back at the bottom of the second to those seats. When we came back, everyone in the stands was like where did you go! Matt came out here looking for who caught his homer and wanted to sign it. As they said that, the owners of the seats showed up LOL. We dipped lol embarrassed because we had just sold it to everyone those were our seats haha. It was a great day. This was in May 2016. By far my favorite player during the 2000s. Even after pujols
He knew he wasn't returning to the birds on the bat. This is loyalty and dedication at its best, very emotional. Big nod to the pitcher and catcher for giving him his moment.👊
I was watching the Pirates broadcast too and kudos to them because they cheered just as much as the Cardinal fans. They really did a great job paying tribute to Holliday and the HR.

This may be my favorite moment in Cardinals history behind the 2006 WS. This was truly a moment that showed what Cardinals baseball is all about. Holliday isn't a Hall of Famer...won't get his number retired....but the fans knew what this moment meant. It was truly the end of an era. 2011-2015 made the playoffs every year...won a title....made another WS. He was our guy after Albert left in the middle of the lineup. Even though he may not be a historically great Cardinal....he wasn't a lifetime Cardinal....only there 7.5 years.....we sent him out like a legend because we knew what he meant for us over that period of time.
K Bear I mean that’s a guaranteed great moment in 2011, but it’s the smaller moments that have meaning...just a moment in a season that wasn’t great...a player that isn’t an all-time great...but there was meaning behind it far beyond a big historical moment.
Leaving the best NL franchise and going to the best AL franchise (in this case, "best" referring to the most WS won), that's something a lot of big league players probably would give anything to do. Hopefully this season Holliday can help us win number 28!
Man. What a great guy to have played for this organization. I hate the business side sometimes. I still have the practice ball he threw up to me on my birthday. Crazy.
Being only 15 there’s not many true baseball memories that have stuck with me, but players weekend 2018 the cardinals were in Denver Matt pinch hit in the 7th I think in a 1-1 game and homers. Rockies would end up winning 8-1 but still my favorite game all time

I took my 6-year-old to a game in 2015, and he was down by the field and asked Holliday for an autograph; he said I'm busy you little shit. My son and I thought he was joking, and my son laughed. In all honesty I'm a huge Pirates fan who lives in St. Louis and I was at the game that night. But My Bucs were out of playoff contention and down 5-0. Didn't mind Holliday hitting that homer in cool moment to see in person.
