  • In thin video I we'll start from a drawing on a piece of paper transfer it to steel and cut it out. Then we'll drill our holes for pins. At that point we should be ready to take our knife blank to water jet to have it reproduced.

    Davy Deals!
    Hey brother, man I love this channel, I really and honestly do Dave. You and the little lady are just awesome salt of the earth people who I would be proud to have as friends!
    At 56, or as those punk kids and their transistor radios say "fiddy six" I've been places, seen things, scary things, like the day I met my wife! ")
    You don't meet many people with the body of knowledge you have Dave, but then there's two of yus! Brook is an absolute firecracker, and just full of knowledge and skills that would take regular slobs like me three lifetimes to know half!
    Then there's the skill of being great teachers! I've known people who could tear a Jumbo Jet engine apart and put it back together in a few days! Incredible mechanics, but ask them to show you how to do something and they're completely lost! You just have to look at the state of a large percent of university students today and you know that nonsense took truly monstrous incompetence at the "professor" level!!
    Again, if one of you two cats was a good teacher on top of all that body of skill and knowledge you both have, that would be pretty cool, but AGAIN, you're both awesome, pro teachers as well!!
    If that doesn't sicken jealous people enough, you're both fantastic musicians and writers too!! !
    There's but one thing a person can say...HOW DARE YOU!!
    I love this channel, can't wait to see the next one Dave!
    Superior job maestro!!
    Jack - Canada

    Excellent ideas.. very cool Great start... I got a bk62, Ian beckers reproduction of the original (he managed to acquire an original) it is a real nice knife, it has an interesting balance and can cut. I completely understand your issue and desire to change it up just a bit. What grinds are you going for. I like a saber grind.. it cuts great in all kinds if situations especially with food!. i like a knife i can cook with after all those feather sticks are carved up. Your knife is your life!.. what are your handle thoughts. i opted not to get a genesis because i didn't like the thumb notches at the blade so i got a outback the custom lt wright made for blade hq, and it is great. my other real favorite is a BK2 it is an awesome beast 1/4" thick and can cut a tomato, and field dress a Buick. Sweet knif . I love knives.. they are so much fun.. Keep at it. making a knife is the ultimate.. i am still learning (yea 50 years) to use a Washita Stone, and a Whetstone, made a strop and am considering giving up and getting a tormek just cause i want all those edges to shave... Talking knives .. love it J

      Hey Jeff, I'm into Saber grinds too, so that will for sure be one grind I 'll work with. I like Wood and Micarta for handles, but I'm not into much thats "exotic". I like simple. Check out my LT wright genesis review.....I feel the same way about the thumb notches ( great knife otherwise).

    As always Dave great job on the video! I really like your simplistic way of doing things. It's still bugging me that your working in that cold garage when there is a wood burner a couple feet away. Hey Larry, you're the second person thats mentioned the cold garage :) The thing is the garage is right next to the house so its easy to skip on over and do something then pop right back in the house....I don't start a fire unless I plan to be out there for a while.

    Nice content and approach to this build. I didn’t realize you were a knife maker, too. I also like to make knives when I can, but I don’t have the shop space to do noisy metal work. That is usually do these days is reprofile or regrind old kitchen knives down into new patterns and then put new handles on them. When I was younger living with my parents in a rural area, I could do things like blacksmithing and heat treating of steel, but that’s pretty much out of the question in apartment living.

    I watched this the other day. I've been thinking about those larger scraps you have left. Just a thought, how about using those to make small replica of the bigger knives, and sell some in pairs. My Dad had a beautiful set a long time ago. The sheath had a smaller sheath sewed to it so both knives used the same one. They must have came from an oriental country, because they had dragons embedded in pearl handles. Absolutely beautiful. Now I know you probably don't want to get that involved, but the big knife, small knife combo would probably sell good. Just a thought from Paul.

    Is that last hole too close to the lanyard hole? It looks as if the head of the rivet and the end of the lanyard tube will almost be touching - once the lanyard hole is larger and the tubing end flared. Looking good though and I like the idea of D2 (at around 60 RC). I have one and though it's a bear to get sharp it doesn't have to be resharpened so soon.

    Dave, try this:take pencil edge and cover the back side of drawing with broad graphite lines, make it as covered/thick as you can. Flip it over and now trace it onto the cardboard. It will preserve your original drawing AND the image won't "grow" with any mistaken lines you may have the other way.

    The drop point tip of your knife is similar to my Ontario RAT1 folder which I carry every day and love. It is very useful in all situations and agree with you that the shape will serve most users in most uses very well. I like your approach. If a knife buyer wanted one that was perfect in every aspect with laser accuracy, then any one of the mass-produced models would do. If one is looking for an artists' eye, then yours would fit the bill. Thanks, Dave for letting us look over your shoulder in your shop.

    Man how do you rate 20K subs?
    Oh wait...That's right your channel is about 250 time better than mine LOL
    You just wait I'll get better an some day I will have 20K subs just like you
    Remember the old days when someone said, I'm 12 and you're only 8 and your reply was, just you wait in four more years I will be just as old as you are LOL
    I said that to my cousins in Michigan one time and the whole room burst out in laughter
    I do have a grinder and was wondering about making knives one time like that with some flat steel
    I was not going to cut anything out and just use a grinder to shape one edge of a piece of flat steel into a good size blade then make a handle for it
    Well I was not into the video long enough to find out you were just making a pattern for waterjet to cut out some stainless steel blanks for and I thought you were going to make one out of that flat steel
    I still have to wonder if I took a piece of flat steel like the kind found at home depot if it would stay sharp for long because they come in 3 foot lengths of which would make a neat looking sword or like 3-4 knives
    Then after I would have to heat treat it real good to make it harder than the regular steel was I suppose
    Actually not sure if that will even work but might try it someday as that flat steel is not real expensive anyway
    Keep it up as I love y'alls videos and they are a great source of information

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  5 лет назад

      Thanks Ray. As for the home depot steel, it is too soft to use ( doesn't have enough carbon) . I think its like 1020. You want like a 1070 at least. Which, shouldn't cost much more actually.

    • @RayBlackburn
      @RayBlackburn 5 лет назад

      @@Bushradical Well do not know if I was told right or not but I was told I could heat it up red hot and rub raw charcoal on the steel and that would add more carbon to make it a higher carbon steel and then I could make a knife
      Really it would seem easier just to start with a higher carbon steel I would think from a metal supplier than going thru all of that
      So busy with my having fun on the farm thing it is all I seem to look forward to now days is killing them pesky hogs and raccoons but was thinking I need something in between and I might try to make some knives as a way to learn something new
      Besides, It's too cold out there in them hills to be hunting this time of year LOL

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  5 лет назад

      Right on. KNifemaking sounds like a good past time....as for the charcoal thing....I'm the wrong guy to ask, I'm just getting started myself.

    • @RayBlackburn
      @RayBlackburn 5 лет назад

      @@Bushradical Yes it is better just to buy the already hardened steel as I'm told I would need a commercial forge and a lot of other expensive equipment to make hardened steel or AR500 steel even but about $100,000 for that equipment
      I'll check the local steel suppliers and see what they have but Sat looks good for a hunt wind out of the south and no moon so have to wait till I get back from trying to get some wild hog for some neighbors
      My freezer is packed so I told them I would give them the meat I harvest this time
