A Trip on the Minneapolis Light Rail

  • While up in Minneapolis, I figured I had to try out the light rail system. This video will give you an idea of what the experience as a rider is like as we travel from 28th Avenue (near the Mall of America) to downtown. Reminds me a bit of our system in St. Louis, though this one is more like a streetcar--especially downtown.

    Excellent video...from start to finish! Enjoyed it very much. Your first-person visual journal entry brings back good memories of my first-ever ride on the Blue Line from the Minneapolis-St Paul airport to the city center last summer. And I also appreciate not only the fact that you recorded your experiences in real time, but also that you make the viewers (me included) feel that we're physically along for the ride with you:)

    I was here for a Marching Band competition in 2019. We had two really close calls with the train. The competition was at the US Bank Stadium, and our equipment trucks were accross the street, but we were parked in a spot where we would have to cross the tracks no matter what we did, we ended up crossing those tracks two times in different locations. Both times while we were crossing the gates were going down and there was a train coming. The first time was at the station going into the stadium, which was fine because the train that was going to start moving let us pass without any issue. But after we were done performing we went over the crossing on the north end of the stadium, not at the station crossing. The front ensamble which was my section had pretty much all of the instruments and sound systems on wheels. But the one of the instruments(the glockenspiel) had really small wheels that would easily get caught in the track gap, it ended up getting trapped, AND it tipped over leaving a mess, which we had to pick up really fast because the gates were going down and a train was coming. So one of the security guards that was with us literally picked up the person and ran him off the tracks(it was pretty easiy because the kid carrying it was pretty small). Luckily the instrument tipped over on the side of the tracks that the train wasn't on so we were able to pick it up. It was a very scary situation. And I learned how often these things go by.

    Dude, awesome video! Thing is, when my family and I went to visit family in St. Paul, we arrived late in the evening like 12 or 1 am, so my parents drove by MoA since my brothers and I was excited to see the Largest Mall in America. As we drove from the Interstate to the snow-plowed streets headed towards MoA, as we drove on this road on a hill by this huge parking garage (thinking it's the same one in your video) I looked down and saw RR tracks and a station next to the garage. I followed the tracks in both direction as far as my eyes can see, trying to look over the snow mounds, I can see they have a very good Light rail system, and we drove parallel to some tracks as we left to find out hotel. Pretty awesome! Never got to ride it even tho I was there for a week, and we only visited the mall once. You know family comes first.

      They sometimes have two cars on really slow days. I think the reason why they have three cars most of the time is because it runs 24/7, unlike most light rail systems in the U.S. Thats pure speculation though.

In Portland is the homeless and filth and freeloaders on Trimet. while I buy my ticket. This Minneapolis system shows what a ride on rail is suppose to be. Portland's is a sample of the mindset of Portland. Its a shame Minneapolis is so cold I would prefer that city.

      There is homeless problem in Minneapolis and St Paul. The housing market is insanely expensive, not Seattle, San Francisco or NYC, but it's bad. Minneapolis though is a clean city, they have dedicated city staff called city ambassadors who not only clean up downtown Minneapolis frequently but can help with directions, etc.....

    • @wallspc
      @wallspc 4 года назад

      The temp is what drives the bulk of the homeless out of Minneapolis. The few that stick around are usually old, mentally ill, and typically mind to themselves away from crowds. If it was as warm as the west coast they would have a similar issue with a high volume of younger homeless people high on who knows what making a mess out of everything.

    • @UnstapledLisa
      @UnstapledLisa 4 года назад

      @@wallspc I lIved in Downtown Minneapolis, 4 blocks away from U.S. Bank Stadium for almost 7 years, up until last weekend, when I moved out of Minneapolis and out of Hennepin County.
      I'm not saying this to argue or debate with you. But I respectfully disagree. People who are homeless not just in Minneapolis and St Paul but in the greater MN area, don't have the option to move to a warmer climate their of a limited means financially. I also until I moved, both on weekdays and weekends got harassed a lot for money, sex and drugs, and there was more homeless people during normal sporting events but especially during X Games, SB52 and the NCAA play offs.
      I'm in no way trying to give the impression though that all homeless solicit for money or engage in in criminal activity.
      A woman was stabbed on the Blue Line on Monday and while there's been other assaults either on the Blue Line or the platforms at the stations, the Green Line has also had a ton of violent assaults (I am a non driver due to disabilities, so I rely on public transportation) and neither Blue or Green Line has that much of a police presence.
      I identify as a medical, mental health activist, as well as doing activism for the homeless. While I believe that all people are entitled to some form of shelter vs tent cities, there needs to be more done for security on the light rail trains, otherwise for those who moved Downtown, either to be close to work, night life and sporting events especiallly when it's promoted that one can live in Downtown Minneapolis and not necessarily need a car, more needs to be done for safety both on public transportation and in both Downtown Minneapolis and Downtown St Paul.
      I'm not dissing either downtown, there's a vibrancy, lots of green spaces and diversity, as well as a push for more affordable housing not just for the poor but the middle class, who are priced out of the high end rental market.
      Here's hoping with all the construction for streets and the ton of higher end rentals, they'll be more police presence and even with a Target, small Lunds and Byerly's, A Trader Joes and Whole Foods, it's still kind of a food desert.
      I just moved to Eagan, transit is easier and in 10 minutes on a bus ride, I have 4 grocery stores (a large HyVee, large Lunds, Cub and Aldi's ) as well as a variety retail and restaurants in all price points and way more variety as well as being cheaper on average, to shop, too.
      But if working or living near or in Downtown is working for ya, I'm glad that's your experience.....
