Every time someone makes a list of weird video game boss battles, I never see Wild ARMs 3 mentioned, which is a shame because it has one of the weirder boss fights you can have in a video game. Do you know how in some RPGs you end up fighting against sentient magical tomes that can cast magic at you? Well, imagine that, except instead of a magic tome it's a porn magazine. And you go up against 12 of them simultaneously. And to top it all off, this optional boss fight gives you one of the books needed for a side-quest. A side quest where you collect and read a series of books to the DAUGHTER OF ONE OF THE PARTY MEMBERS.
My suggestion is a list of video game sequels that are so different from their predecessors that you have to squint to see the resemblance. Possible examples include, but are not limited to, the following: - Toejam and Earl was a weird game from before exploring to find goodies became too overused to be fun while Toejam and Earl 2: Panic on Funkatron was a platformer in an oversaturated market. - Dune was a point-and-click adventure while Dune 2 was the first RTS. - X-Com was a strategy game where you killed aliens and got killed by your budget while X-Com Interceptor was a space shooter. - Pac Man was the iconic maze running game while Pac Man 2: The New Pac Adventures was...seriously, what WAS it?
@@Falchion1984 Jak and Daxter was a light hearted collectathon game (think Banjo Kazooie). While Jak 2 kept some of it the focus became much more combat oriented, including becoming a 3rd person shooter and having flying cars. A much darker tone too.
Honestly, Jumbo Champloon from Little King's Story would have fit right in. To start with, Jumbo Champloon is a giant eraser with various things stuck to him who, like the citizens of his island, speaks a language made of English words that don't mean anything like what they mean in English. Mechanically, his king challenge is one of the most traditional boss fights of the king challenges -- I'm looking at you, Kings Shishkebaboo, Omelet, and to some extent TV Dinnah -- but the aesthetics are what really sell it as weird. Just check it out.
I know you bring up Mara resembling that part of the human anatomy. But, the funny thing is that Mara is also an old Japanese word for that body part as well. Atlus were being intentionally immature when they designed that thing.
My favorite is Beezlebub from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It’s a giant, unmoving rotting corpse that’s hanging from meat hooks. You have to tear him apart piece by piece while the giant bees that have taken up residence in his body attack you. That game has another terrifically weird boss: Granfalloon. It’s a huge floating brain that sheds screaming clay people every time you hit it.
Beelzebub has flies (and tiny maggots that drop to the floor and crawl around) not bees. Granfalloon is a giant mass of bodies except it's core, hence why so many fall down to attack you from the mass. Fun fights though. ;)
