- I took a little vacation to Japan this summer and I took my Steam Deck along for the ride. I thought I'd share my experiences and thoughts on doing such a thing. Does the Steam Deck make a good travel companion? Can it get you through a 13 hour flight? What accessories might someone want to take along side the Deck?

Thanks for putting together this video! I've had it in my watch later for a couple of months and finally got to it. :) I'll travel to Japan this year and while I have no desire to bring my Steam Deck (I'll probably bring something smaller like the 3DS), it was cool listening to you share your experience while watching the photos from all these amazing places I will most likely visit.

I have been struggling to find interesting tech podcasts that I can enjoy in the background.
That's very interesting. I was kind of curious how something like this would go over as it is a bit different than my normal format. I kind of struggled with it too because I was trying to find interesting visuals to put with it so it wouldn't be all audio with nothing to look at. :) Thanks for the feed back, I'll consider doing more like this.
The only game that I play on a somewhat regularly is Genshin and Honkai and that's it, right now I'm finishing my backlog on steam, surely I will finish it by next year 🙃
I've actually never tried Genshin. Maybe I'll check it out eventually. Lately I've spent a lot of time in Bravely Default 2 and Octopath.
On the steam deck? Sucks you have to install windows
I prefer the jsaux's shoulder bag, It can store more, you can store pretty much every daily necessities (ofc not laptop or tablet), phones, steamdeck, usb hub, sdcards storage, documents/creditcards, a powerbank, a book or handheld a size of nintendo switch, and a power adapter. Everything on your shoulder. You don't have to worry about carrying it with your hand and when to let go of it. It stays on your shoulder all day long.
I actually had a larger shoulder bag that I put everything in as well. I just like to put the deck and such in a smaller case inside the larger one so it's more protected.
Using the Steam deck as your desktop computer isn't doing it as wrong as you think. Consider the price. Instead of buying 2 devices or an expensive gaming laptop you can just buy the steam deck and use it docked for work just like you would a laptop or desktop. It is good enough to do the job.
It's pretty damn hard to buy a PC of any kind that's cheaper and outperforms the steam deck, even if you include the price of a dock and a hard drive upgrade for the cheapest model.
hmmm, fair point I suppose. If your budget is super tight I guess that's true. I was looking at it more from and optimal situation. If your budget allows a desktop. In my case I have a steam deck, desktop, and laptop, all running some Linux variant. What I meant was that the steam deck is best used as an extension of your desktop pc rather than as a replacement for it. If, from a monetary point of view, you have no other options though, the steam deck will get the job done. So again, fair point I guess.
Japan rarely steal.
I 100% agree. Really I wasn't too worried about that. Fist off though, there were more people in Japan than just Japanese. To get to Japan you need to go though airports which have a lot of different groups of people. Also it's not just about theft but also if you accidentally leave it on a plane, train, bus, hotel, etc. Lastly, I'm a cyber security professional, and in that profession you always assume the worst, it's just how it works. I certainly mean no disrespect to Japan or it's people. My experience was amazing and generally speaking all the people I met were super nice. Japan is a place I would love to visit again. I actually miss it.
