In this video I discuss some of the most commonly used interfacings & stabilizers in handbag, wallet and other function projects.
If you are new to sewing bag projects I hope this video will help shed some light on why we use different stabilizers for different applications.

Vanessa's videos are always on point from day one. Anytime I want to teach myself something new with sewing, she did a video on exactly what I need like 7 years ago and it the tutorials hold up and provide valuable information which gives me immense confidence!

Thank you for this! I tried to rescue a book-shaped bag after my kid was sick on it by throwing it in the wash… and the stiffener was cardboard, so now I’m looking to replace the stiffener in the “book cover” portion rather than replace it. I was looking at using a plastic insert, but now I’m thinking about using a foam instead, which could give it enough stiffness but make it a bit easier to open than the cardboard was… and this tells me what I’ve been wondering for creating my own backpacks and pen cases, etc., in the future.

Once again, another excellent tutorial. Just got back into sewing after 20+ years. I learned a lot and was overwhelmed when I went to the fabric store to see all the upgrades. Happy tears! Found your site and what a great teacher! I actually purchased foam stabilizer for a huge bag I made from Debbie Shore. It was a risk but I use foam stabilizer for the bottom of the bag and used a stiff stabilizer on the lining bottom of the bag. For a hug bag it stands up and keeps shape. She had a zipper outside pocket on the outside and opposite inside zipper pocket. But because I like to organize I added an outside regular pocket to the opposite side and visa versa on the inside. I added weight with extra fabric and the foam/stabilizer at the bottom of the bag firmed it up. Your tutorials are great. Thank-you!
WHEN I STARTED CREATING MY BAGS, I LIKED USING THE WOVEN INTERFACING. IT MADE THE FRONT POCKET STAND OUT MORE ON MY TOTEBAGS AND MAKE UP POUCHES. GREAT VIDEOS VANESSA. I LEARNED A LOT FROM YOU! THANKS AGAIN, SWEETIE!
You obviously intuitively know what people need.
Not only do you show us what it looks like pre- stabiliser/ interfacing. But you show us post- stabiliser/ interfacing AND as a product.

Thank you so much for this video. I was looking at a tote bag pattern and it called for Fusable woven interfacing AND sew-in foam together. Any ideas why? In your video you talk about using all the different interfacing individually but not combined. I’m just sitting here scratching my head wondering why on earth I would use both the foam and interfacing. Thanks in advance!
