My wife and I own both 2018 and 2021 Outback. This is a "NO NO" for us. You are weakening the frame by drilling the frame with a 1 1/8 inch hole saw. There are other hitches for Subaru Outback that do not require drilling into the vehicle frames. As for us, we are extremely happy with the Subaru OEM hitches - no drilling required.

Wow....This installation is ridiculous. So glad I saw this before buying. The Curt hitches are so much simpler to install.

That part of the frame you are drilling into opens up at the back (underneath the bumper beam). You should be able to pass the hardware through that slot instead of drilling the hole into the frame.

Sometimes the slots are too small so instead of drilling I use a hole enlarger to open that preexisting hole a bit for the hardware

Great video! He has the most delicate hands and explains the install clearly.

Great video. I'd spray the hole that was drilled with some rust-oleum for good measure.

I’m a shop and do a lot of installs, custom work and metal work… if you need to do that to your frame to install a hitch then you bought the wrong car.

This hitch is designed specifically for this vehicle and the process of adding an access hole, if done right, will not harm the integrity of the frame. There are thousands of hours of testing before these are released and it would not be on the market if it was unsafe.

@@trailerhitches 1000s of hours of study ? Ok show me .. because I don’t believe that for a second.
Because I have many many year of experience in building cars, fab, metal work, and from experience I can tell you that the Subframe that the hitch attaches to would fold like foil if hit from the back. I can also tell you that any metal structure that is perfored cut or drilled loses strength no matter what.
Considering the subframe is 15 gage and hitch is about a quarter inch, subframe would fold before the hitch 100% of the time
I do also enough collision and insurance claims to tell you the car would be totaled on the spot if subframe and trunk floor would fold.
PS: I have installed too many hitches in my life to tell you honestly this car and the subframe are NOT made for it. But I understand you’re selling a product and can’t tell the truth
