German here, I want to offer a short version of my view of the crisis here. In short: Greece caused the debt problem by itself, but Germany actively made it worse. In the video, it is sort of indirectly mentioned: Debt to GDP ratio skyrocketed after the crisis began - much of that can be attributed to a shrinking GDP. Easy example: Say a country has a debt-to-GDP of 100%. Then the GDP drops by 25%. This means that the debt-to-GDP ratio is now at 133%. This partially explains the enormous increase in debt. What is the cause of the shrinking GDP? A huge part can be attributed to the economic policies that were implemented at the start of the crisis. Important to note: Germany was pretty much responsible for Greece's economic policies with the implementation of the Troika. To put it bluntly, in these matters, Greece was pretty much a vassal to Germany. And Germany was - and still is - obsessed with economic austerity and a balanced budget. Since Greece was spending a lot, huge cuts were implemented on behalf of Germany's government - many of these were to social services. However, this also meant that people had less money to spend, leading to a downward spiral. Germany is really stupid with regards to economic policies, so much so that I'd say our economy thrives (so far) in spite, not because of our politics. So, Germany actively made the situation in Greece worse. But that's not all. In German newspapers, reports of "us having to save the irresponsible south Europeans and lazy Greeks" was pretty common. It was disgusting on so many levels. I personally am in favor of a debt cut for Greece - also sort of as a payback for a) the Troika and b) WW2 forced loans.
That was actually a rather accurate, objective and non prejudiced assessment. I’d like to add that the point when we shot ourselves in the feet is with the “cooked” books that allowed us to enter the monetary union prematurely, something that led directly to a huge rise in goods’ prices and inflation.

I think that the media' s propaganda really effects the way the people of two countries see each other and it causes me disgust as well. I don't think that all Germans are cruel as they are portrayed by the greek media as not all Greeks are lazy. If Turkey accepts Greece's claimed EEZ then it would make the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles literally useless. Then Turkey would have the control of the beaches and the rest of the sea would by dominated by Greece which would make any port in the Aegean and Black Sea also useless. Population decline is it's major issue. Even without the Euro, devaluing any alternate currency isn't a magic bullet that would of solved all of greece's problems.The debt would still of been in Euros and Dollars, peoples savings would of been wiped out. And they would still be in massive debt.
I agree there are no magic bullets. But truth is countries with their own currency have access to many tools that can be help moderate and make adjustments to the economy. Today Greece has no control over its monetary policy and can't even change it's own taxes unless instructed by Brussels.
Greece should think of ways to not only stop people from leaving, but to also encourage couples to have at least two children, and encourage immigration from western countries, especially those who have populations of Greek and Greek descent (such as the U.S).

If Greece exit euro would be 86% cut of public debt. Private debt will be in new currency so won't happen what you say. Exit from euro and devalue new currency will launch competitiveness and make imported goods expensive. Now I eat beans from Kirjistan because one euro is equal to 97 som (their currency). But Greece is doomed, alot of their money goes into simply keeping the debt at the same rate, because interest rates on 200% debt will obviously make it grow alot. Italy has a similar issue, but not that worse. In an Idealistic world the EU would come together and buy all of Greece's debt or buy it and restructure it so that the interest rates are super low but i guess then Greek Politicians would continue to make dumb decisions.

As a greek I dont know any more. Its seems like an odyssey the daily life. Have to work 10 hours a day for 800-1000€ it's a bit too much. You make some good points, thanks for making us thinkk deep about these issues. Greece relies on allies for support but the debt crisis taught me that EU will sell Greece to the highest bidder when the shit hits the fan. Greece is an εθνος ανάδελφον, we dont really have sworn allies except Cyrpus ofcourse. No army will come to our rescue if the world goes sour e.g. in a 5 year recession. The future is rough but also exciting. I hope my country can develop a sense of urgency against the common existential risk (Turkish imperialism) and manage to industrialise, strengthen our military and continue our traditionally good diplomatic performance.
Controlled via debt. It is called Debtocracy. We need to first start at the fact that back in 1821 foreign powers did not like the idea of an independent Greek state fearing what evolutions could follow through that. It is hard for you to imagine in today's world but back then the industrial revolution was only in its first phase, the world power was Britain ruling the seas and profiting precisely from the demise in the Mediterranean traderoute and through the exploitation of the Atlantic trade (not so much with Americas but with East/South Asia via the circumnavigation of Africa). Imagine a rising state that could in the 20th century be 50 to 60 million souls stretching to both Europe and Asia controlling the Mediterranean trade. As such, while initially jumping to back the Ottomans, the powers and in particular British and French (who having lost the Napoleontian wars worked along with Britain in this), seeing the Greeks are doing well in the first couple of years, they mingled in sending their agents, people such as Mavrokordatos (British agent) and Kolettis (French agent) to supposedly organise the political fraction of the revolution. And what did these do? They started a campaign of arrests and murders of revolutionaries causing a Civil War in the very next year. Among their first steps was the signing of a big loan .... "in the name of the Greek people". I.e. private people such as Mavrokordatos sent a team of private people who had nothing to do with the Greek people and the Greek revolution to sign in the name of the Greek people a big loan which, in case the Greeks managed to become independent, would go into effect. This created the first state in human historymmwith an automatic foreign debt "officiallised by contract" and loaded upon it. As absurd as it sounds, that was the reality. From there on, Greece was run by that foreign imposed mafia organisation, and very much still is the case until today - a mere look in the key political families suffices to realise what has been going on. With one debt after the other, Greece alternated period of heavy and light debt. The initial "Greek state creation debt" was paid a century later which only shows how trapped were Greeks politically and financially all that time. And the same went on in the 20th century. After 1950 (because WWII ended in Greece in 1949 due to the Cold War imposed Civil War), Greece experienced a rare period of economic growth precisely because the country was so much destroyed by the German occupation previously. Indicatively, Greece's economy had a higher development rate than the "German miracle" and was along with Japan the fastest developing economy - of course it was nothing impressive because these are the numbers, Greece's economy was nothing exceptional, nor highly productive, though efforts were made towards that direction (in the 50s and 60s and until 1970s Greece was producing indeed quite a large array of commodities and industrial products for the scale of its economy). ... and then there came the Turkish invasion in Cyprus, which was a back-stabbing by NATO forcing Greece to half-step out of NATO. USA fearing Greece going completely neutral, or worse, passing into the Iron Curtain, pressured Greece to enter into the EEC, the precursor the EU, so as to prove its allegiance to the West. Greece did so but the very moment it did it had to comply with the EEC masterplan. The masterplan of EEC, then EU, was to obliterate all key production activities in Greece, including first and foremost ships and ports (... the ships.... note this and go up to the beginning of this long comment!) and transform the country in a service economy. Yet the only main service Greece could render was... tourism. Tourism is a respectable economic activity and though it can sustain an island of 200,000 population, it will most certainly not sustain a country of 10 million souls. Thus the EEC/EU kept pumping up the Greek economy with more and more loans and financial packages artificially inflating the economy which seemingly was "going well" and of course did so as a means of tightening control over Greece. This is mainly a geostratefic issue afterall. Things got infinitely worse by the aforementioned foreign imposed oligarchies which constantly mismanaged funds, maintained and cultivated the endemic corruption and used loans literally to sustain armies of voters, namely of the two key parties (the Socialists, champions of corruption, and the Center-Right champions of tolerance to corruption too). The worst part was that this cultivated both an individualistic and quasi-fatalistic point of view among the average Greek citizen who though "Things are always going to be like that, so why should I bother? Lets dive in corruption and get what I get out of it". A point of view which current and future generations of Greeks are going to pay dearly. What is unfair though to say is that Greeks "partied with all that money", which is not at all the case considering that the majority of Greeks proved to be better spenders than the average western Europeans spending more on property investments and their children's education (Greeks are by far the most educated ethnic group in the EU - and by a large distance - those of you who work in multinational environments are well aware of that). All in all, past behaviour of both powers and the Greek state dictate to a large extent future behaviour, things won't change. Sounds pessimistic but that is what it is. Things will change once there is an upheaval in the international geopolitical scene during which Greece may find a better spot.

Your video in general is pretty accurate (especially where you show that despite popular belief Greece remains a first-world country), but imo it reflects 2015 public opinion in Greece more than 2022 public opinion. Right now, if you add up the electoral share of all parties that want Grexit, you would have about 10%. While it is true that in 2015 maybe a majority of Greeks would be open to leaving the Eurozone, nowadays it is a non-issue, with no major party supporting the idea, and it is never discussed as a solution among normal Greek people. TLDR: Grexit in 2022 Greece and Europe is as unlikely as covid magically disappearing tomorrow

Your war analysis with Turkey was too simplified. War is about maximising cost effectiveness. Greece's military doctrine is extremely defensive and it has a very large army for it's size and a superior air force and air defence system. In a pure 1 on 1 situation, Turkey would lose far too much to make it's gains worth anything (which would require months and years of warfare). In addition, there are few places they can actually conquer without going into an attritional situation which would force them in a awkward position. The best they can do is grab Kastelorizo and even that at a great cost of life's, infrastructure and hardware. This is of course ignoring all the enemies the Turks have, their occupation of Northern Syria and their Kurdish insurgent population. Their position can become extremely difficult if they start roleplaying as Ottomans.
IMO the modern model of rapid development which relies heavily upon taking on large debts isn't viable for a still mostly agrarian country like Greece to service debt payments. This is unlikely to change, considering Greece's geography.
It's not about the debt per se. Debt in it's nature can be justified for as long as it produces development and increases the national GDP. For example, if (insert country of choice) takes out a trillion dollars of debt, but increases said GDP to 3 to 4 trillion in 10 years, then said loan becomes justified due to a higher economic return. However, this is not the case for Greece. In the case of Greece, instead of opening up the economy and promoting local industrial development (what Deng did in China and Ozal did in Turkey in the same decade mind you). It doubled down on state institutions under the PASOK era (a party which was very similar to the PRI of Mexico) and increased their profitablity by incurring debts to Germany and other banks. This meant that the average Greek of that era could always be guaranteed a good paying job with benefits, at the expense of the private industry. It got so bad that the Greek government actively took measures to make the country unwanted for investments. Hence why the Nissan factory shut down in Volos why the shipbuilding industry went to South Korea and why the household appliance factories went to Turkey. For the average Greek, it made no sense to open up their own enterprise, why deal with a overwhelming bureaucracy when you can get a cushy job for voting PASOK/New Democracy. Eventually however, the reality of economics hit Greece back in 2008, and the rot was exposed. However the Greek government, instead of opening the economy and promoting local industry/attracting investment, just kept on taking whatever handout the EU gave it to keep the decrepit system going. And this is the modern situation of Greece: an overbearing public sector full of party and family goons who get paid to do nothing and small business who get rung by the previous cadre to keep the system going.

I have dual citizenship between the US and Greece. I was there when the crisis hit and it hit almost overnight. So many protests and riots. We had to cancel our vacation early because of it all. As a kid it gave me a few cool stories but now that I'm older and seeing my relatives struggling every day really makes it hard to want to go back.

Greek here. Very nice and accurate presentation. This said, there is a point you didn't mention : Natural gas found and to be found in the Mediterranean seafloor. The speculate amounts south of Crete may bailout the Greek national dept several times. This is one of the major reasons why Turkey is so aggressive and allied with one side of the Libyan civil war in order to derail any attempt to set the boundaries of the EEZ between Greece and Libya. Turkey was getting away with it's violations of Greek borders because Germany was shutting down any Greek protest at the EU and NATO levels. But since destruction of the North Stream pipelines Germany is in a desperate need of an alternative to the Russian natural gas. the US where happy to oblige, but in small quantities and at four time the price. Now we see a subtle change in the German diplomacy. Chancelor Sholtz visited Athens but went strait back to Berlin rather visiting Ankara as well like Merkel used to do. Some say that Germany is now secretly wishing that the Greeks and Cypriots secure their EEZs quick in order to provide the UE with natural gas from their own EEZ or even from Egypt, Libya, Israel or event from the Arabic peninsula. This means building a pipeline such as East Med. Also no one wants Erdogan to control any valve. As a Greek I would also like to comment on the discrepancy of military power betweeen Greece and Turkey. On the paper, Greece stands no chance. But Greece stud no chance against the Persians in antiquity or against Mussolini in 1940 either. Numbers are not everything. There is a limiter of personnel an vehicles you can land on a tiny islands. Heavy military equipment is no use in the mountains either. Therefore, Greece is not an easy piece to chew. The landings in the islands are yet another headache for Turkey since they have lost aerial supremacy since Greece is buying Rafale and F35 jets as well as news NLOS rocket systems. Greeks have better pilots an sailors than Turkey. And as you said, better allies. We know the Turks well and we know when they are bluffing or preparing for real action. And currently they are all mouth but no teeth.

German here, I want to offer a short version of my view of the crisis here. In short: Greece caused the debt problem by itself, but Germany actively made it worse. In the video, it is sort of indirectly mentioned: Debt to GDP ratio skyrocketed after the crisis began - much of that can be attributed to a shrinking GDP. Easy example: Say a country has a debt-to-GDP of 100%. Then the GDP drops by 25%. This means that the debt-to-GDP ratio is now at 133%. This partially explains the enormous increase in debt. What is the cause of the shrinking GDP? A huge part can be attributed to the economic policies that were implemented at the start of the crisis. Important to note: Germany was pretty much responsible for Greece's economic policies with the implementation of the Troika. To put it bluntly, in these matters, Greece was pretty much a vassal to Germany. And Germany was - and still is - obsessed with economic austerity and a balanced budget. Since Greece was spending a lot, huge cuts were implemented on behalf of Germany's government - many of these were to social services. However, this also meant that people had less money to spend, leading to a downward spiral. Germany is really stupid with regards to economic policies, so much so that I'd say our economy thrives (so far) in spite, not because of our politics. So, Germany actively made the situation in Greece worse. But that's not all. In German newspapers, reports of "us having to save the irresponsible south Europeans and lazy Greeks" was pretty common. It was disgusting on so many levels.
I personally am in favor of a debt cut for Greece - also sort of as a payback for a) the Troika and b) WW2 forced loans.
That was actually a rather accurate, objective and non prejudiced assessment.
I’d like to add that the point when we shot ourselves in the feet is with the “cooked” books that allowed us to enter the monetary union prematurely, something that led directly to a huge rise in goods’ prices and inflation.

Population decline is it's major issue. Even without the Euro, devaluing any alternate currency isn't a magic bullet that would of solved all of greece's problems.The debt would still of been in Euros and Dollars, peoples savings would of been wiped out. And they would still be in massive debt.
I agree there are no magic bullets. But truth is countries with their own currency have access to many tools that can be help moderate and make adjustments to the economy. Today Greece has no control over its monetary policy and can't even change it's own taxes unless instructed by Brussels.

But Greece is doomed, alot of their money goes into simply keeping the debt at the same rate, because interest rates on 200% debt will obviously make it grow alot.

In an Idealistic world the EU would come together and buy all of Greece's debt or buy it and restructure it so that the interest rates are super low but i guess then Greek Politicians would continue to make dumb decisions.

Heck,not even our rebellion in 1821 and subsequent war of independence stopped us from fighting among ourselves. What I mean to say is that yes you're correct. Persian Wars Byzantine Empire War of Independence resistance against the Italians and Germans resistance and rebellion against the military regime of 1967-1974 just to name the more iconic ones. As a greek I dont know any more. Its seems like an odyssey the daily life. Have to work 10 hours a day for 800-1000€ it's a bit too much. Also government brings us many refuges that they are becoming a big part of greece even while they are doing bad in our country's. Greece relies on allies for support but the debt crisis taught me that EU will sell Greece to the highest bidder when the shit hits the fan. Greece is an εθνος ανάδελφον, we dont really have sworn allies except Cyrpus ofcourse. No army will come to our rescue if the world goes sour e.g. in a 5 year recession.
The future is rough but also exciting. I hope my country can develop a sense of urgency against the common existential risk (Turkish imperialism) and manage to industrialise, strengthen our military and continue our traditionally good diplomatic performance.

Controlled via debt. It is called Debtocracy. We need to first start at the fact that back in 1821 foreign powers did not like the idea of an independent Greek state fearing what evolutions could follow through that. It is hard for you to imagine in today's world but back then the industrial revolution was only in its first phase, the world power was Britain ruling the seas and profiting precisely from the demise in the Mediterranean traderoute and through the exploitation of the Atlantic trade (not so much with Americas but with East/South Asia via the circumnavigation of Africa). Imagine a rising state that could in the 20th century be 50 to 60 million souls stretching to both Europe and Asia controlling the Mediterranean trade.
As such, while initially jumping to back the Ottomans, the powers and in particular British and French (who having lost the Napoleontian wars worked along with Britain in this), seeing the Greeks are doing well in the first couple of years, they mingled in sending their agents, people such as Mavrokordatos (British agent) and Kolettis (French agent) to supposedly organise the political fraction of the revolution. And what did these do? They started a campaign of arrests and murders of revolutionaries causing a Civil War in the very next year. Among their first steps was the signing of a big loan .... "in the name of the Greek people". I.e. private people such as Mavrokordatos sent a team of private people who had nothing to do with the Greek people and the Greek revolution to sign in the name of the Greek people a big loan which, in case the Greeks managed to become independent, would go into effect. This created the first state in human historymmwith an automatic foreign debt "officiallised by contract" and loaded upon it. As absurd as it sounds, that was the reality. From there on, Greece was run by that foreign imposed mafia organisation, and very much still is the case until today - a mere look in the key political families suffices to realise what has been going on. With one debt after the other, Greece alternated period of heavy and light debt. The initial "Greek state creation debt" was paid a century later which only shows how trapped were Greeks politically and financially all that time. And the same went on in the 20th century. After 1950 (because WWII ended in Greece in 1949 due to the Cold War imposed Civil War), Greece experienced a rare period of economic growth precisely because the country was so much destroyed by the German occupation previously. Indicatively, Greece's economy had a higher development rate than the "German miracle" and was along with Japan the fastest developing economy - of course it was nothing impressive because these are the numbers, Greece's economy was nothing exceptional, nor highly productive, though efforts were made towards that direction (in the 50s and 60s and until 1970s Greece was producing indeed quite a large array of commodities and industrial products for the scale of its economy).
... and then there came the Turkish invasion in Cyprus, which was a back-stabbing by NATO forcing Greece to half-step out of NATO. USA fearing Greece going completely neutral, or worse, passing into the Iron Curtain, pressured Greece to enter into the EEC, the precursor the EU, so as to prove its allegiance to the West. Greece did so but the very moment it did it had to comply with the EEC masterplan. The masterplan of EEC, then EU, was to obliterate all key production activities in Greece, including first and foremost ships and ports (... the ships.... note this and go up to the beginning of this long comment!) and transform the country in a service economy. Yet the only main service Greece could render was... tourism. Tourism is a respectable economic activity and though it can sustain an island of 200,000 population, it will most certainly not sustain a country of 10 million souls. Thus the EEC/EU kept pumping up the Greek economy with more and more loans and financial packages artificially inflating the economy which seemingly was "going well" and of course did so as a means of tightening control over Greece. This is mainly a geostratefic issue afterall. Things got infinitely worse by the aforementioned foreign imposed oligarchies which constantly mismanaged funds, maintained and cultivated the endemic corruption and used loans literally to sustain armies of voters, namely of the two key parties (the Socialists, champions of corruption, and the Center-Right champions of tolerance to corruption too). The worst part was that this cultivated both an individualistic and quasi-fatalistic point of view among the average Greek citizen who though "Things are always going to be like that, so why should I bother? Lets dive in corruption and get what I get out of it". A point of view which current and future generations of Greeks are going to pay dearly. What is unfair though to say is that Greeks "partied with all that money", which is not at all the case considering that the majority of Greeks proved to be better spenders than the average western Europeans spending more on property investments and their children's education (Greeks are by far the most educated ethnic group in the EU - and by a large distance - those of you who work in multinational environments are well aware of that).
All in all, past behaviour of both powers and the Greek state dictate to a large extent future behaviour, things won't change. Sounds pessimistic but that is what it is. Things will change once there is an upheaval in the international geopolitical scene during which Greece may find a better spot.

Your video in general is pretty accurate (especially where you show that despite popular belief Greece remains a first-world country), but imo it reflects 2015 public opinion in Greece more than 2022 public opinion. Right now, if you add up the electoral share of all parties that want Grexit, you would have about 10%. While it is true that in 2015 maybe a majority of Greeks would be open to leaving the Eurozone, nowadays it is a non-issue, with no major party supporting the idea, and it is never discussed as a solution among normal Greek people.
TLDR: Grexit in 2022 Greece and Europe is as unlikely as covid magically disappearing tomorrow

Your war analysis with Turkey was too simplified.
War is about maximising cost effectiveness. Greece's military doctrine is extremely defensive and it has a very large army for it's size and a superior air force and air defence system.
In a pure 1 on 1 situation, Turkey would lose far too much to make it's gains worth anything (which would require months and years of warfare). In addition, there are few places they can actually conquer without going into an attritional situation which would force them in a awkward position. The best they can do is grab Kastelorizo and even that at a great cost of life's, infrastructure and hardware.
This is of course ignoring all the enemies the Turks have, their occupation of Northern Syria and their Kurdish insurgent population. Their position can become extremely difficult if they start roleplaying as Ottomans.

IMO the modern model of rapid development which relies heavily upon taking on large debts isn't viable for a still mostly agrarian country like Greece to service debt payments. This is unlikely to change, considering Greece's geography.
It's not about the debt per se. Debt in it's nature can be justified for as long as it produces development and increases the national GDP. For example, if (insert country of choice) takes out a trillion dollars of debt, but increases said GDP to 3 to 4 trillion in 10 years, then said loan becomes justified due to a higher economic return. However, this is not the case for Greece.
In the case of Greece, instead of opening up the economy and promoting local industrial development (what Deng did in China and Ozal did in Turkey in the same decade mind you). It doubled down on state institutions under the PASOK era (a party which was very similar to the PRI of Mexico) and increased their profitablity by incurring debts to Germany and other banks. This meant that the average Greek of that era could always be guaranteed a good paying job with benefits, at the expense of the private industry. It got so bad that the Greek government actively took measures to make the country unwanted for investments. Hence why the Nissan factory shut down in Volos why the shipbuilding industry went to South Korea and why the household appliance factories went to Turkey. For the average Greek, it made no sense to open up their own enterprise, why deal with a overwhelming bureaucracy when you can get a cushy job for voting PASOK/New Democracy. Eventually however, the reality of economics hit Greece back in 2008, and the rot was exposed.
However the Greek government, instead of opening the economy and promoting local industry/attracting investment, just kept on taking whatever handout the EU gave it to keep the decrepit system going. And this is the modern situation of Greece: an overbearing public sector full of party and family goons who get paid to do nothing and small business who get rung by the previous cadre to keep the system going.

I have dual citizenship between the US and Greece. I was there when the crisis hit and it hit almost overnight. So many protests and riots. We had to cancel our vacation early because of it all. As a kid it gave me a few cool stories but now that I'm older and seeing my relatives struggling every day really makes it hard to want to go back.

Greek here. Very nice and accurate presentation. This said, there is a point you didn't mention : Natural gas found and to be found in the Mediterranean seafloor. The speculate amounts south of Crete may bailout the Greek national dept several times. This is one of the major reasons why Turkey is so aggressive and allied with one side of the Libyan civil war in order to derail any attempt to set the boundaries of the EEZ between Greece and Libya. Turkey was getting away with it's violations of Greek borders because Germany was shutting down any Greek protest at the EU and NATO levels. But since destruction of the North Stream pipelines Germany is in a desperate need of an alternative to the Russian natural gas. the US where happy to oblige, but in small quantities and at four time the price. Now we see a subtle change in the German diplomacy. Chancelor Sholtz visited Athens but went strait back to Berlin rather visiting Ankara as well like Merkel used to do. Some say that Germany is now secretly wishing that the Greeks and Cypriots secure their EEZs quick in order to provide the UE with natural gas from their own EEZ or even from Egypt, Libya, Israel or event from the Arabic peninsula. This means building a pipeline such as East Med. Also no one wants Erdogan to control any valve.
As a Greek I would also like to comment on the discrepancy of military power betweeen Greece and Turkey. On the paper, Greece stands no chance. But Greece stud no chance against the Persians in antiquity or against Mussolini in 1940 either. Numbers are not everything. There is a limiter of personnel an vehicles you can land on a tiny islands. Heavy military equipment is no use in the mountains either. Therefore, Greece is not an easy piece to chew. The landings in the islands are yet another headache for Turkey since they have lost aerial supremacy since Greece is buying Rafale and F35 jets as well as news NLOS rocket systems. Greeks have better pilots an sailors than Turkey. And as you said, better allies. We know the Turks well and we know when they are bluffing or preparing for real action. And currently they are all mouth but no teeth.
