I love these PR videos! Im PR born in the states but was never taught how to speak it 21 years later after going to PR ive now want to learn how to speak and all your videos help! Thank you again
I’m in the same boat I’m half PR never been around my family. So I never learned the language but always wanted to learn. I’m so glad I’m not alone people always say. Why you don’t speak Spanish. Because I look more Spanish then anything right off the back people just start speaking Spanish thinking I know what there saying. thank you for the videos.
Me too I’m Puerto Rican born in the states. Get made fun of a lot because I couldn’t speak Spanish and I learned still got made fun of because I didn’t speak properly. Hopefully these videos will help.
Two great podcasts to hear very informal convo between puerto ricans are: all on spotify "Alzando la voz" (women) "Los Del Colegio" (men about sports) "Economía con Calle" is also good if you like politics. You will hear them cutting the entire front "scribir" instead of "escribir", spanglish, and so on. All your tips are very helpful bro and have helped me start understanding. Thanks!
I watch these videos everyday for the last week or so and I already noticed a huge improvement In my listening skills. It feels good to listen to my grandmother after so many years and understand her like I’m 5 again 😂
The Puerto Rican and Dominican accents have a very distinct cadence where it ends sentences by elongating the pronunciation of the last word and then usually shortening it the next sentence and repeating back and forth honestly reminds me of how Brazilian Portuguese sounds
These are just the type of videos I have been looking for all along. I am a gringo, but I have been speaking Spanish most of my life in my job and learned a lot from friends in the past. But I always wanted to improve my comprehension of real Puerto Rican Spanish especially when they speak fast. I am a stickler for perfecting my accent sounding like a native speaker. I already get asked what country I am from and impress the native speakers from different countries. Please keep these videos coming! I look forward to them. I listened to this one five times just tonight!
COACH ROCK!!! i used to watch all your old basketball videos, happy to see you’re still on the youtube grind and now you’re my defacto spanish coach .. bless up 🙏🏿
I’m a New York Rican living in PR. The thing is your cuz spoke very clear n steady. But the people I encounter here speak a hundred mph. A sentence sounds like they said one word. I be like whoa slow down homie, breathe
I noticed this video is more easy to understand. I assume cause he's like storytelling / almost reminiscing so he's thinking more and talking slower. I still like it tho it feels more "intermediate" listening practice compared to many of the PR podcasts I listen to that do speak faster
Great video Rocky! I’ve been speaking with a Puerto Rican accent for a while and this is great practice. Btw, I say my rs as ls and I’m just wondering, is that something I want to avoid in formal situations?
When it comes to intonation, is there specific places or words in a sentence where it's appropriate and not appropriate? How do you know when to use the intonation and not to?
The work you put into this video is absolutely worth it and exactly what I was looking for to help improve. A quick question at around 5:10 your friend says 'gente comprando piraguas' and you translate 'piraguas' as 'canoes'; I thought piraguas is a common street food in PR? Just seeing if maybe in this context it does mean canoes and I'm overthinking it. Thanks again for all your hard work!!
So my mom speaks a neutral Puerto Rican accent and actually I think it’s really endearing and easy to understand, no more than like castillian. Im trying to inherit it but she’s lost a lot of the fluency… is there a Puerto Rican equivalent to the expression “bear with me”? Mi español es muy malo ahora pero solamente necesito el tiempo y todo está bien, but i need a way to express this until I get there.
One thing I’m having trouble with is pronouncing the “scratch” in the throat for some R’s… like the one in “Rápido”. Any advice for saying that noise better?
Count me in I really want to learn 🇵🇷 spanish besides 🇩🇴 spanish Rocky I want to practice my spanish reading comprehension, & everything buddy count me in as always ready for my lessons
I’m Puerto Rican and Dominican but everyone tells me I sound more Dominican, I want to sound more Puerto Rican bc I look more Puerto Rican and I like Puerto Rico a little more so what should I do to sound more Puerto Rican?
The main difference is the intonation/rhythm/tone. Take notice of where they pause, where they raise their voice, where they raise/lower pitch in the sentence(s). Sincerely, another 🇵🇷 🇩🇴 who used to sound dominican.
To be done with/finished with something. Estoy jarto/jarta de... = I'm done with... Used often to imply you've had your fill of or you can't take it anymore. My mom yelled this all the time lol
12:20 because in America we have the weakest street food culture unlike Asia, Latin America, or say even in Beirut, Lebanon( where they were selling pinchos and bumpin Reggaeton 🎉en la Calle when I was there. Shout out to my Arabs! Somos uno 🇵🇷 ❤ 🇱🇧
Taught me basketball skills as a teen and now spanish skills as an adult. 🫡 puerto rican spanish is super prominent in NYC so im trying to learn more of it.
