In East Orange there was a place called Ricky's on 4th Ave. He made Italian hot dogs, Italian cheese burgers, Italian sausage, and just about anything else you want Italian style.
And he knew almost everyone who walked in his door. I really miss and love him 💕

Love your recipe and presentation... As for the first Italian hotdog I ate it was in 1960 there was a Jimmy Buffs not to far from our school Bergen st school and it was on I believe 14th ave...we would save our money and buy Italian hotdogs on our way from Bergen st School than later they made Italian sausage and hamburgers... Awesome hotdogs and memories

I grew up in Newark and I miss Italian hot dogs and burgers so much! You’re right, Jimmy Buff’s makes the beat Italian hot dogs! I used to live over on South Orange Ave by West Side High and we would walk to a place near there that I believe was in Easy Orange and get Italian hot dogs and cheeseburgers. I’m in Virginia now and I have to make them at home too if I get a craving.

I’m from Jersey and now in PA the closest I’ve come is Pino’s on Southside Easton but you’re right nothing like a Jersey Italian hotdog / burger. But I loved that spot on Main Street in EO / Orange.

Looked so good, Newark Italian hot dogs are the original and the best!!! The only thing I would have done differently is, I would have fried the dogs in the same oil you used to fry the potatoes. Just me.
Now that I moved to NC I miss them

You should try Hot Grill in Clifton, NJ (If they are still open) I was born and raised in Passaic, NJ.

I originate from Newark, blocks away from 14th Ave and 9 St where Jimmy Buffs was located. I now live in S Jersey and make my own Italian Style Hot Dogs. I also bake breads and make my own pizza bread, the bread used for this. Another place that had Italian Hot Dogs was Tommy’s in Elizabeth, also Dickie Dees in Newark. When I lived in Woodbridge there was a truck on St George’s Ave, Petie’s that had them with the real bread, Pizza Bread.

Yesssss! Jimmy Buff's is everybody's favorite if you're from Jersey ... Where are you from in Jersey?

According to the Jimmy Buff's legend, Italian Hot Dogs started in Newark about 80 or 90 years ago. Even today, once you get about 20 or 30 miles out of Newark, no more Italian Hot Dogs. An Italian Hot Dog MUST be made with a high-quality all-beef hot dog (you mentioned all the good ones). I was wondering what you were going to use for the genuine "pizza roll" (like a thick pita cut in half to form a pocket). Take it from someone who has been eating them for about 60 years, an Italian Hot Dog on a hot dog bun just doesn't do it.

You did good on cooking up italian doggies, but next time if you cook, use peanut oil to truly enhance the taste especially the taters. I'm retired in florida and really miss all the Jersey goodies.

I'm in Florida now too. I made me one today, but I used good old Bacon Grease...LOL yeeeees. That will give anything great flavor😁
