I just got a job offer and the sign on bonus is $1,000 but they require you to stay one year and if you leave before that one year period you have to pay that $1,000 back to the company. So I'm glad I read the fine print. Also great advice save the sign on bonus in case you don't like the job or they get rid of you for some reason before a year is up.
I own a business and this sign on bonus is ridiculous. I won’t do it and a lot of other business are closing because they simply cant survive due to the high prices for product and staffing. We need to understand that money doesn’t fall out of the sky and running a business is way harder than just working there so why would anyone run it if they’re going to make as much or a little more than their staff? I’d rather go work and make someone else’s life a living hell. The government thinks we all think the same and won’t act to our advantage. I don’t know about you but if I can’t make my life better by paying more taxes than I’ll just stay home to. Call of duty and burgers…The American Dream is sleeping it of at the time being.
What they AREN'T saying is that sign on bonuses give you an opportunity to lower your salary offer, thereby lowering the long term costs of keeping a new employee over multiple years. Benefits are equivalent to a used car dealer selling you a lemon with "great rebates."
I have Mandi's guide for salary negotiations and used it successfully for my current position. Her advice is gold!
