Using a Canon 40D in 2022 - What's it like?

  • I borrowed ‪@DavidFlowerOfficial‬'s Canon 40D for a few days in exchange for my Canon 7D to see what the camera is like to use. I went for a walk along a stretch of the Wold's Way with my son, Leo, and took a few photographs along the footpath with it. While the specs of this ageing camera didn't blow me away I was pleasantly surprised by the image quality it gave off.

    I cut my digital teeth on a 40D. It’s basically a crop sensor 5D classic with a sensor cleaner. I went to Istanbul in 2009 with mine. With a 17-55 2.8 IS zoom. It just did everything beautifully.

      @@rajendrakumarvarsani4184 as all camera even in last modern one, there are weak spots in the 40D of course. Don't forget it's an old one so it will be noisy in dark environement but you will get fantastic image when time will be shiny. With 6 images/second you will take sharp birdy photo or what you want. It depend what you want to do with it and wich kind of images.
      Hope this help.

    Thanks, Chris, for this reminder of what a worthy old horse the 40D remains. Loved your tractor shot and how you cropped it, as well as your nature samples, the zoomed in details being a nice touch, and your low-key presentation. I purchased mine new in early 2008 and, while I added a 5D Mk IV in 2017 and a 6D more recently, the 40D continues to see lots of use, including with several vintage film-era M42 lenses. The colors produced, including with the vintage glass, are lovely, quite often just out of camera without too much need for tweaking in post production. And, of course, there is the usefulness of extending tele-range with its APS-C crop-sensor ratio. Most enjoyable presentation, and I have subscribed. Cheers.

    Theses cameras are built like a tank. They are durable and made of a magnesium alloy body, unlike newer cameras made of polycarbonate materials. It is actually the APSC version of the classic 5D and uses the same focus points. I still have my 50D which is very similar to the 40D but with 15 megapixels instead of 10 megapixels. In the hands of a good photographer, these cameras can still produce good quality pictures very much comparable to cameras of today.

    Just had my old girl out this morning. Still good and the reason I had it out is because it was drizzling a little and the 40d has some weather sealing. Can't say that for my other digitals. I've had it since it was new. 2007?

  • @aquss33
    @aquss33 Год назад +1

    It is interesting, it's extremely surprising how good it is, yet as soon as you zoom in, it looks bad, it looks sharp because of the L Lens, but the 10MP is just not enough and the ISO performance is about what you would expect - underwhelming. When I was buying my first camera 4 years ago, I was looking at the 40D, 7D and 800D; at completely different price ranges of course. I ended up choosing the 800D because of the newer features, focusing speed, image quality and image size (24MP, not too far from the 7D, but still much more than the 40D), ISO Range and of course video with dual pixel AF in 1080p and I am happy I did even if I have to keep in mind that the camera is much more fragile since it's fully plastic and not weather sealed; the ruggedness of the 7D and 40D is definitely a feature I wish I could have gone for, but the 7D mark II was and still is just so much more expensive. Prices where I live were/are: 40D - 120€ used; 7D - 220€ used, 800D - 500€ used (body only). Truthfully, I would have been happy with any of them, but I decided to buy the one that I wouldn't have to replace for the longest time because of it's outdatedness.

    • @biggstavros5876
      @biggstavros5876 Год назад

      The 40D isn't outdated. You can`t get a better photo with a newer camera unless you just buy them for the technical prowess. Are you a pixel peeper, which I am sure you probably are?

    • @aquss33
      @aquss33 Год назад

      @@biggstavros5876 Well, it isn't outdated, I still recommended it to many people and know many people who use it, I was just saying that I was surprised by the image quality and that the much worse ISO performance was expected, also its focusing speed is slower, those are just facts, I was planning on buying it 4 years ago, but the 10mp is just too little for me, I also often shoot when there isn't a lot of light and high shutter speeds are important. I cropped the 24mp file of the 800D to 8.5MP that was taken at ISO 5000, it looks great, a bit grainy but still great, since the ISO performance at 6400 is about equivelent to the 1600 of the 40D. You can't really do that with the 40D, so in terms of that, it's outdated. I never said it takes better photos at normal conditions though, for example well lit portraits look great. Also, no I am not a pixel peeper.

    I’ve ordered a used Canon 40D which I hope to receive soon.
    I’m positive about the shutter lives of Canon pro-level cameras like the single digit series. However, cannot say so about the two digit bodies.
    Generally, what kind of shutter life do you think the 40D could have? Will it touch the declared level of 100k or fall short of it!

      I don't have the 40D, but I know that its focusing isn't very fast, if that's your problem, it might just be a limitation of the camera. If it can't focus at all, your lens might be set to manual focus. I can't really help you, but I just wanted to say this just in case this was just a trivial problem like that. Also focusing speed can depend on where you are focusing since it looks for contrast. Can't really specify what the problem is.
